Notes:
The choice of liquid matrix for fast atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectrometry is important not only for optimizing spectral appearance in terms of the physical properties of the sample molecule (e.g. hydrophobicity) but also in terms of chemical reactivity. The suppression of physicochemical phenomena occurring in the FAB source and hence of chemical reactions of the sample can lead to much improved spectra. In this way, peaks resulting from specific processes can be targeted and their intensity optimized. In addition, the technique may be used to investigate the physicochemical phenomena themselves, which, despite the enormous usage of FAB mass spectrometry are still poorly understood in terms of mechanism and origin.
