    Notes: Two parallel plane air jets and offset air jets have several common features such as the existence of a subatmospheric pressure region and the formation of a flow recirculation zone adjacent to the nozzle plate. In particular, the symmetry plane that exists between two parallel plane jets may appear to affect the flow field in much the same way as a solid wall does in a reattaching offset jet. It is obvious, however, that there are significant differences far downstream from the nozzles because the two parallel plane jets will combine to form a single free jet while the offset jet will develop into a wall jet. Differences in the near field between these two jet configurations with a separation ratio of 2.125 are examined here under identical initial flow exit conditions through laser Doppler anemometer measurements of the mean velocity components, turbulence intensities, and Reynolds shear stress. The results indicate that the wall exerts significant retarding and turbulence suppression effects on the offset jet in the flow development region. Through the use of comparisons, the interaction of two inner shear layers on both sides of the symmetry plane in two parallel plane jets results in a much more turbulent near field than that of the offset jet. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung  Mehrere Wärmerohre wurden ausgelegt und hergestellt, um die Einflüsse von Arbeitsmedien, Behältermaterialien und Dochtstrukturen auf den Wärmeübertragungsmechanismus solcher Apparate zu studieren. Es wurde auch untersucht, welche Auswirkungen die Anzahl der Dochtschichten auf die effektive thermische Leitfähigkeit und das Wärmeübergangsverhalten der Wärmerohre hat. Es zeigte sich, daß das Strömungsverhalten des Arbeitsmediums von Struktur und Zahl der Dochtschichten abhängt. Wärmeübergangscharakteristik und effektive Wärmeleitfähigkeit beeinflussen unmittelbar das Strömungsverhalten. Mit steigender Anzahl der Dochtschichten (bis 16 Schichten) wächst die Wärmestromdichte bei geringeren Temperaturdifferenzen. Infolge Wirksamwerdens der Entrainment-Grenze ergab sich bei mehr als 16 Dochtschichten keine weitere Widerstandsverminderung.
    Notes: Abstract  Several heat pipes were designed and manufactured to study the effect of the working fluids, container materials, and the wick structures on the heat transfer mechanism of the heat pipes. Also, the effect of the number of wick layers on the effective thermal conductivity and the heat transfer characteristics of the heat pipes have been investigated. It was found that the flow behavior of the working fluid depends on the wicking structures and the number of wick layers. The heat transfer characteristics and the effective thermal conductivity are related directly to the flow behavior. Increasing the number of wick layers (up to 16 layers) increases the heat flux with smaller temperature differences. The flattening phenomena of the thermal resistance was observed after 16 wicks layers due to the entrainment limit.

    Notes: Abstract  Mean velocities and turbulence characteristics of a turbulent plane offset jet with a small offset ratio of 2.125 have been studied using laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). Static pressure measurements highlight the importance of side plates in enhancing two-dimensionality of the jet. The spatial distributions of turbulence intensities and Reynolds shear stress show a high turbulence recirculating flow region close to the nozzle plate between the jet and the offset plate. The LDA results have been used to examine the capability of three different turbulence models (i.e. k–ɛ, RNG and Reynolds stress) in predicting the velocity field of this jet. While all three models are able to predict qualitatively the recirculation, converging and reattachment regions observed experimentally, the standard k–ɛ turbulence model predicts a reattachment length that best agrees with the experimentally determined value.

    Notes: Abstract  The flow field generated by unventilated two parallel jets has been investigated using LDA. The two nozzles each with an aspect ratio of 24 were separated by 4.25 nozzle widths. Results show that a recirculation zone with sub-atmospheric static pressure was bounded by the inner shear layers of the individual jets and the nozzles plate. It was shown that the two-dimensionality of the flow was greatly enhanced by the installation of side plates and that the flow was independent of Reynolds number between 8300 and 19300. Acoustic excitation introduced at the outer shear layer mode has been shown to reduce the size of the potential core, recirculation zone, merging length and combined length but enhance jet spreading, streamwise velocity decay and volume entrainment.

    Notes: Abstract Objective: Amisulpride is a substituted benzamide neuroleptic, which binds selectively to dopamine D2 and D3 receptors, mainly in the limbic structures. States of delusion and agitation occur frequently in the population aged more than 65 years, especially in demented patients and this sometimes requires the use of neuroleptics. The objectives of this study were to determine the safety and the pharmacokinetic profile of 50 mg of amisulpride administered orally as a single dose to elderly volunteers. Methods: Twenty healthy volunteers (10 men and 10 women) aged 65–79 years were included in this open trial. Frequent measurements of blood pressure and heart rate were made and ECG and blood samples were performed up to 72 h after drug intake. Results: The overall clinical and cardiovascular safety was satisfactory. The mean Cmax of the racemate amisulpride in elderly people was 64.1 ± 6.7 ng · ml−1, and was not different from the value of 56 ± 4.1 ng · ml−1 in young subjects. As with the Cmax, the mean values of t1/2 and AUC in elderly people (15.6 ± 1.3 h and 667 ± 51 ng · ml−1· h, respectively) were not different to values observed in young subject (respectively 11.7 ± 0.5 h and 603 ± 25 ng · ml−1· h). Conclusions: A single oral dose of amisulpride was well tolerated and showed a similar pharmacokinetic profile in healthy elderly and young subjects. However, these findings should be confirmed after multiple dosing in a larger population in order to establish the lack of need of dosage adjustment in this elderly population.
