Notes: We have combined a cw visible laser with synchrotron radiation, respectively, to photodissociate the s-tetrazine molecule and to probe, with an electron analyzer, the vibrational energy of the nascent fragments. No fragments other than N2 and HCN were detected on the time scale of our experiment. We find that 5.4%±0.5% of the nitrogen fragment departs with one quantum of vibration and at least 26% of each HCN fragment is vibrationally excited, mainly in the bending mode (n=1 to 6) and probably to a very small extent in the C–N stretching mode (n=1). These data are fully consistent with a pure three body fragmentation mechanism governed by the geometry of the transition state as calculated by Scheiner et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 108, 8160 (1986).

Notes: Carbonate commonly accumulates in weathering profiles developed on noncalcareous parent material under arid and semiarid climatic conditions. Such weathering profile types are widespread in Morocco, making it critical to know the sources of the calcium in order to understand the genesis of carbonate-rich soils. In this study, we use 87Sr/86Sr as a geochemical tracer of the Ca sources in weathering profiles developed on volcanic rocks (basalt, tuff, andesite and latite) in the Mediterranean coast of Morocco. The results show that the most of the Sr, and hence Ca, is of an external origin, derived from (i) sea-water for the profiles located near to the coast or (ii) sea-water plus Liassic carbonate outcropping in the catchment for the profiles more distant from the coastline. The contribution of the host rock is small, being less than 25%. The ratio of the Sr (Ca) from the parent material to that from the external sources is controlled by the degree of porosity developed in the profile.

Notes: In this article we wish to report on the commissioning of the SU5 undulator-based beamline, whose primary scientific goal deals with high-resolution spectroscopy and photon-induced dynamics in the vacuum ultraviolet range on dilute species. In order to achieve such a scientific program, we have conceived an original optical design, centered around a 6.65 m off-plane Eagle monochromator equipped with two gratings (2400 and 4300 l/mm) illuminated by an astigmatic prefocusing optical system. The different components of the actual beamline, such as the optical elements, their holders/manipulators and the monochromator are described, with a special emphasis on critical aspects such as the mechanical resolution and stability, the vibrations limitations, and the thermal stability. Then, a spectral calibration procedure of the monochromator is described, followed by the presentation of the measured performances of the beamline in terms of ultimate resolution and flux. Owing to a gas phase ion yield experiment on rare gases, we have been able to measure a raw linewidth of 184 μeV at 21.61 eV (18s′ line of Ne) corresponding to a resolving power of 117 000 and a raw (respectively, lifetime-deconvoluted) linewidth of 119 μeV (respectively, 76 μeV) at 15.82 eV (13s′ line of Ar) corresponding to a raw resolving power of 133 000 (respectively, 208 000). The ultimate targeted 105 resolving power is therefore observed on most of the VUV range, which corresponds to an unprecedented performance. The measured photon flux in a 1/50 000 bandwidth is in reasonable agreement with the expected values lying in the 1010–109 photon/s range over the VUV range. These very satisfactory performances, with a slit-limited resolution down to about 15 μm slits aperture, are due to the special care which has been paid at both the conception and construction stages concerning critical issues such as the optical and mechanical design, the vibrations, the driving/encoding system, and the slope errors of the gratings. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Siltstones are unusual rocks. They are mainly made up of quartz. Glacial grinding is considered by some authors to be the main, or even the only, process generating silt. This is supported by: (1) the presence of silt in basal tills from present ice-caps and, above all, (2) by the volumetric importance of Quaternary loess. However, ancient glaciogenic sediments contain only a little silt scattered in the matrix of tillites, or forming thin intercalations in pro- and periglacial deposits. These siltstones represent less than 5% of the total volume of Upper Proterozoic and Upper Ordovician glaciogenic sequences of West Africa. On the other hand, silt is abundant in weathering profiles of tropical, equatorial and mediterranean zones. This silt is generated by splitting of minerals, mainly quartz, inherited from the parent rock. Quartz grains are partly dissolved in situ and their fragments cemented by iron oxi-hydroxides in tropical and equatorial zones and by calcite in mediterranean zones. Silt is particularly abundant in tropical soils, comprising up to 50-75%. Secondary dissolution of the iron or calcite matrix induces disaggregation of these soils and the release of silt which is later reworked and concentrated by wind or running water.Weathering processes, and especially those operating in tropical zones, are the main phenomena generating silt. Glacial grinding would generate only a little silt. A large part of the material of Quaternary loess may be derived from glacially reworked weathering profiles.
