    Description: Occluding junctions have been found between the lateral cell borders at the base of the rectum of Periplaneta americana. They appear as punctate membrane appositions in thin sections, and after incubation in physiological solutions containing lanthanum before fixation the inward penetration of tracer is impeded in this same basal area. Moreover, freeze-fracture studies of this region reveal simple linear ridges on fracture face P and grooves on fracture face E, which are similar to the less complex vertebrate tight junctions. The luminal clefts, which permit free inward diffusion of tracers, present no tight junctions, but do have septate junctions.     Description: ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to develop and parameterise a physically justified yet low-parameter model to quantify observed changes in surface runoff ratios with hillslope length. The approach starts with the assumption that a unit of rainfall-excess runoff generated at a point is a fraction β of precipitation P (m) which travels some variable distance down a slope before reinfiltrating, depending on the local rainfall, climate, soils, etc. If this random distance travelled Y is represented by a distribution, then a survival function will describe the probability of this unit of runoff travelling further than some distance x (m). The total amount of per unit width runoff Q (m 2 ) flowing across the lower boundary of a slope of length λ (m) may be considered the sum of all the proportions of the units of rainfall excess runoff integrated from the lower boundary x = 0 to the upper boundary x  =  λ of the slope. Using these assumptions we derive a model Q ( λ ) =  βPμλ /( μ  +  λ ), ( μ  〉 0, 0 ≤ β ≤ 1, λ ≥ 0) that describes the change in surface runoff with slope length, where μ (m) is the mean of the random variable Y . Dividing both sides of this equation by Pλ yields a simple two parameter equation for the dimensionless hillslope runoff ratio Q h ( λ ) =  βμ /( μ  +  λ ). The model was parameterised with new rainfall and runoff data collected from three replicates of bounded 2 m wide plots of four different lengths (0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 m) for 2 years from a forested SE Australian site, and with 32 slope length-runoff datasets from 12 other published studies undertaken between 1934 and 2010. Using the parameterised model resulted in a Nash and Sutcliffe statistic between observed and predicted runoff ratio (for all datasets combined) of 0.93, compared to −2.1 when the runoff ratio was fixed at the value measured from the shortest plot.     Notes: Abstract The cells of Malpighian tubules of the Hemipteran blood-sucking insect, Rhodnius prolixus, are binucleate. The cells grow without division and, at each larval moult, the DNA content of the nuclei doubles. At the final moult to the adult, however, the DNA content does not change, even though the tubules grow considerably thereafter. In contrast, the DNA content of the tubule nuclei of two other Heteropteran Hemipteran insects, Dysdercus and Oncopeltus, doubles at every moult, including the final one to the adult. If extra larval moults are induced in Rhodnius, by treatment with juvenile hormone, DNA doubling is induced at each such supernumerary larval moult. Shortly after the DNA content increases in Rhodnius tubules, the chromosomes can be seen in a condensed state; presumably, therefore, DNA replication is achieved by endomitosis. Both before this DNA doubling, and within a day after, multiple nucleoli are prominent and appear actively engaged in producing ribosomal precursors. In fed fourth stage Rhodnius, the DNA content of the tubule cell nuclei increases 5–6 days after the blood meal. Neither the rate of fluid secretion that can be induced by stimulation nor the rate of transport of p-aminohippuric acid show any change at the time of DNA replication nor in the remaining days before ecdysis to the fifth stage. Malpighian tubule cell growth without division is thus well adapted to providing, without interruption, for the excretory needs of the growing insect.

    Notes: Summary It has been found that then-alkyl bromides are capable of inducing the fusion of unilamellar liposomes. These compounds can bring about fusion of liposomes composed of either pure phosphatidylcholine or phosphatidylcholine + phosphatidic acid. Fusion of unilamellar liposomes gives rise to multilamellar structures, the morphology of which has been examined by negative staining and freeze-fracture techniques. It has been shown by microelectrophoresis that then-alkyl bromides have no effect on the surface charge of liposomes, and fusion has been further characterized by use of light scattering and differential scanning calorimetry, the latter indicating that true mixing of the fatty acyl chains occurs upon fusion. Finally, fusion occurs atn-alkyl bromide levels below that required to saturate the aqueous phase of the system.

    Notes: Summary The avascular ventral nerve cord of the moth, Manduca sexta, possesses an extensive dorsal mass of connective tissue in which lie fibroblasts that produce a collagen-like protein. The lateral and ventral surfaces of the nerve cord are ensheathed by an acellular neural lamella. Beneath this lies a layer of microtubule-laden perineurial cells which are separated from one another at their peripheral borders by lacunae containing electron-opaque material to which the cells are attached by hemi-desmosomes. Beyond these spaces, narrow intercellular clefts occur between the interdigitating perineurial plasma membranes; these are then connected by both gap and tight junctions. The axons beneath are surrounded by glia which also contain many microtubules and which are linked to one another by desmosomes and tight junctions. When intact nerve cords are incubated in horseradish peroxidase, reaction product is subsequently found within the neural lamella as well as in the lacunae and clefts between perineurial cells, but not beyond this level. Desheathed preparations, however, contain peroxidase within the cytoplasm of the exposed glial cells. Lanthanum penetrates the neural lamella and the lacunae, clefts and gap junctions between adjacent perineurial cells, but no further. It therefore appears that the tight junctions in the perineurium may be the site of restriction to the entry of ions and molecules, the existence of which has been suggested previously by electrophysiological investigations.

    Notes: Summary Gap junctions have been isolated from four murine tissues, from rat and Xenopus laevis liver, and from Nephrops norvegicus (Norway lobster) hepatopancreas. The preparations of gap junctions from each vertebrate tissue contain a single major protein, Mr 16000, and those from Nephrops hepatopancreas a protein, Mr 18000. Immunocytochemical studies using affinity-purified antibodies raised against gap junctions from Nephrops show the junctional origin of the 18k protein. Immunological studies using Western blotting and biochemical studies using tryptic peptide mapping show no significant differences between the 16k junctional proteins of mouse and hence provide no evidence of tissue variation. These studies also suggest that the mouse, rat, and Xenopus 16 k proteins and the Nephrops 18 k protein share some common structural features.

    Notes: Summary The branchia of pyrosomes has been found to be like that of ascidians in that it shares with the latter, besides the presence of peribranchial chambers, stigmata bordered by clusters of seven rows of flattened cells, each bearing a single row of long cilia. The intercellular junctions between ciliated cells of the branchial basket and between the cells lining the gut, in pyrosomes, have been studied in thin sections and by freeze-fracture. In both tissues tight and gap junctions are present, but the former are much more extensive in the gut. The gap junctions in the branchial basket exhibit some atypical features. Moreover, although there are extensive zonulae adhaerentes between the ciliated cells of the branchial basket, there are none between the epithelial cells of the intestinal tract. This feature of the branchiae, together with the alignment of their cells into highly ordered rows of seven cells, are similar to those found in some groups of ascidians. The evolutionary relationships between pyrosomes and the aplousobranch ascidians are considered in the light of these results.
