Beschreibung: The larval stages of the mangrove crab Parasesarma catenata were reared in the laboratory from eggs of females collected in the Mgazana estuary, South Africa. Survival and duration of larval stages were tested for the combined effects of temperature and salinity in a factorial design experiment, using three females each with two replicates of 15 larvae per combination. Combinations were made from five temperature (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 ºC) and four salinity values (15, 25, 35 and 45 ‰). Results were tested by ANOVA and multiple regression was applied to generate contour models by polynomial equation. It was found that P. catenata larvae develop optimally in near to seawater salinity at a temperature of around 25 ºC. These results support the assumption that newly-hatched larvae of this species are exported from the estuarine environment to the sea for development.

Beschreibung: Samples were collected monthly at four fixed stations in Mida creek from May 1996 to April 1997, in order to determine the species composition, abundance and diversity of phytoplankton and zooplankton collected with 20- and 332-mm mesh size plankton nets respectively. Sampling also included measurement of salinity and temperature. Peaks in phytoplankton abundance occurred in May and January, following the long rains in April–May and the short rains in November–December. Zooplankton densities followed the phytoplankton peaks with the main peak occurring in February after the major phytoplankton bloom. Similarly, smaller peaks occurred in May and March. Copepods dominated the zooplankton forming up to 60% of total species composition. High zooplankton diversity occurred in June–July when zooplankton abundance was lowest as compared to February–March. Spatially, the highest diversity was recorded at station 1 located towards the open sea as compared to the other stations located farther inshore.

Beschreibung: The objective of the zooplankton group was to establish an inventory of zooplankton resident in Mida creek, their diversity and quantify their abundance, spatial and temporal distribution. Apart from this, various hydrographic parameters were measured simultaneously in order to find out whether any correlation existed between the two. Among the hydrographic parameters measured were temperature, salinity, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen. In April 1996, the research team established four stations. These were located approximately 3 kms apart starting from the creek mouth to the backwaters of the creek. They were named station 6 at the creek mouth, station 4 located parallel to Hemmingway dry docking platform, station 3 at Sudi Island picnic site and station 1 at Dabasso beach.

Beschreibung: A pen culture system of the mud crab, Scylla serrata was introduced in Mtwapa mangrove creek with the aim of finding an alternative source of income and food for the local communities, who practice artisanal fishery in the creek. Other objectives were to motivate the interaction between scientists and the community through technology transfer, and to collect scientific data necessary for maintenance and management of the culture system. Pen construction took place from October 2000 -January 2001. The pen was located in the intertidal area and measured 800 m2. It was constructed and fenced using uzio (fish trap) material made of mangrove poles and wood. Stocking of the pen with seed crabs occurred from February-May 2001. Local sources was used to obtain a total of 1697 crab seeds which were measured (carapace length and width), weighed and sexed before stocking. The crabs were fed with trash fish obtained from a local fish processing plant. Feeding was conducted once daily, preferably at high tide. Salinity of the pond ranged from 12.8 to 35 ppt; temperature between 25 and 36 degrees C, pH from 7.95-8.25 and dissolved oxygen (DO) from 2.65-4.00 mgn. Harvesting of the crabs started after 4 months from date of stocking. Additional activities that occurred in the pen were planting of suitable mangrove seeds (Rhizophora mucronata and Avicennia marina) in the bare areas of the pen. These provided canopies for the crab as well as reforesting the area.

Beschreibung: Experimental culture of crabs, fish and prawns was conducted in a pond measuring approximately 800 m2 in Kwetu training center, Mtwapa, Kenya. The objective was to evaluate the success, potential and economic viability of the culture system. Crabs were placed in 6 experimental cages measuring 2 x 2x 0.5m for 3 months in different stocking densities in order to compare their survival. The three densities were 3.0, 6.0 and 9.0 crabs/m2. Other crabs were placed in compartments made of locally available ‘fito’ designed in eight compartments measuring 1x1 x 0.9 ft for crab fattening. In the same pond, 2045 juvenile prawns Penaeus monodon and P. indicus measuring between 21-25 mm in total length were stocked inside the pond to grow, together with milkfish and mullets. At the end of 3 months, harvesting was done for crabs, and after 6 months for prawns and fish. Environmental variables were measured in the pond biweekly during the six month period. This included, temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a, nitrates, phosphates and pH. Higher survival of crabs occurred in the cages that had a stocking density of 3.0 crabs/m2. For crab fattening, highest mean growth per month was 24.6 gm, while lowest was 6.7 gm. A mortality of 43% was experienced during crab fattening at the end of the culture period. Recapture of prawns was poor due to inability to drain the pond completely, and mortality, however a number of fish by catch are reported. Constraints and recommendations are discussed.
