    Notes: Abstract We investigated the role of seed packaging (division of total seed volume among individual seeds) and fruit color in determining feeding preferences of American Robins (Turdus migratorius). Experiments were conducted using artificial fruits with either 8 small plastic beads or a single large one with equivalent volume. Other fruit characters were held constant. As predicted, large seeds were voided rapidly by regurgitation, resulting in higher pulp consumption rates for large-seeded fruits than for small-seeded ones, whose seeds were passed through the gut. Most birds apparently used this difference in profitability as a choice criterion: four of seven preferred large-seeded fruits. That three individuals did not do so suggests that birds may differ in their ability to perceive minor differences in fruit profitability, or to use them as choice criteria. Pulp color was also important: blue fruits were preferred by all seven birds. This preference was surprising, since Robins commonly feed on red fruits in the field.

    Description: Organisms, such as molluscs, that produce their hard parts from calcium carbonate are expected to show increased difficulties growing and maintaining their skeletons under ocean acidification (OA). Any loss of shell integrity increases vulnerability, as shells provide protection against predation, desiccation, and disease. Not all species show the same responses to OA, which may be due to the composition and microstructural arrangement of their shells. We explore the role of shell composition and microstructure in resisting dissolution caused by decreases in seawater pH using a combination of microCT scans, XRD analysis, and SEM imaging. Two gastropods with different shell compositions and microstructure, Tegula funebralis and Nucella ostrina, were exposed to simulated ocean acidification conditions for six months. Both species showed signs of dissolution on the exterior of their shells, but changes in density were significantly more pronounced in T. funebralis. XRD analysis indicated that the exterior layer of both shell types was made of calcite. T. funebralis may be more prone to dissolution because their outer fibrous calcite layer has more crystal edges and faces exposed, potentially increasing the surface area on which dissolution can occur. These results support a previous study where T. funebralis showed significant decreases in both shell growth and strength, but N. ostrina only showed slight reductions in shell strength, and unaffected growth. We suggest that microstructural arrangement of shell layers in molluscs, more so than their composition alone, is critical for determining the vulnerability of mollusc shells to OA.

    Notes: Vibrational relaxation of the ν2 and 2ν2 CC stretch vibrational states in the ground electronic state of acetylene has been investigated using infrared kinetic spectroscopy. Excited vibrational states of acetylene are produced by 193 nm ArF excimer laser photolysis of vinyl bromide in a room-temperature helium buffer gas. Vibrational state populations are probed by direct absorption with the continuous single-frequency output of a color center laser operating in the 3 μm region. The vibrational transitions observed were the ν2+ν3−ν2 and the 2ν2+ν3−2ν2 combination bands. Rate constants for He vibrational relaxation are 1.5(3)×10−14 and 2.1(7)×10−14 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 for ν2 and 2ν2, respectively.

    Notes: In order to realise the full potential of photogrammetry for national map revision, photographic acquisition lead times and, where possible, costs must be significantly reduced. In this paper a review of alternative platform and camera configurations is made and tests are undertaken utilising simulated data and medium format data taken from an existing project. The results suggest that the medium format camera and helicopter combination may have much to offer while the small format camera and microlight aircraft systems have yet to be developed into an effective data acquisition and map compilation system.

    Notes: The volatile alcohols in ripe bananas were identified in preparation for the study of their biosynthesis. The following 13 alcohols were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry supported in some cases by IR spectral data: ethanol, propan-l-01, P-methylpropan-l-01, butan-l-01, pentan-2–01, 3-methylbutan-l-01, hexan-l-01, heptan-2–01, cis and tram hex-3-en-l-01, cis and traws hex-4-en-l-01, and cis pent-2-en-l-01 (tentative). 2-Methylbutan-l-01 was shown to be associated with 3-methylbutan-l-01 in a ratio of 1:200.
