Description: The site of Warren Field in Scotland revealed two unusual and enigmatic features; an alignment of pits and a large, rectangular feature interpreted as a timber building. Excavations confirmed that the timber structure was an early Neolithic building and that the pits had been in use from the Mesolithic. This report details the excavations and reveals that the hall was associated with the storage and or consumption of cereals, including bread wheat, and pollen evidence suggests that the hall may have been part of a larger area of activity involving cereal cultivation and processing. The pits are fully documented and environmental evidence sheds light on the surrounding landscape.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The Stokes flow problem associated with the steady flow of a viscous incompressible fluid in a general twisted tube with a uniform non-rotating section is investigated. The equations of motion and boundary conditions are formulated in an orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system which is constructed for the interior of a finite length of the tube. A solution scheme is then presented involving two small parameters which are proportional to the tube curvature and torsion respectively.

Notes: Summary An approximate solution, correct to order three in a small parameter, is established for the velocity field induced in a viscous fluid by the slow rotation of two tori. The tori possess a common axis and have concentric circular sections. The small parameter is the ratio of the radius of the outer circular section to the distance of the section centre from the axis of rotation. The torque acting on each toroidal surface is also obtained.

Notes: Summary The two dimensional problem of the transient development of capillary-gravity waves on the free surface of an incompressible inviscid fluid is investigated. The fluid occupies the semi-infinite space bounded by a fixed vertical barrier and the cases of finite uniform depth and infinite depth are considered. A boundary condition is derived for the liquid-solid intersection and it is shown how this provides for a unique solution. The solution of the problem is obtained by using integral transforms and the asymptotic form of the free surface displacement is obtained.

Notes: Abstract Myodystrophy (myd), an autosomal recessive mutation of the mouse characterized by progressive weakness and dystrophic muscle histology, maps to the central portion of Chromosome (Chr) 8 (Lane et al. J. Hered 67, 135, 1976). This portion of Chr 8 contains the genes for a mitochondrial uncoupling protein (Ucp) and kallikrein (Kal3), which map to distal 4q in the human, providing evidence for a segment of homology. Characteristics of the myd phenotype coupled with this homology suggest that myd may be a mouse homolog of facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD), which maps to human 4q35. We have confirmed and expanded the region of mouse 8-human 4 homology by generating a map of Chr 8 in an interspecific backcross of C57BL/6J and a partially inbred strain derived from M. spretus. The map is comprised of the genes for Ucp, coagulation factor XI (Cf11), and chloride channel 5 (Clc5), all of which have homologs on distal human 4q, 15 microsatellite loci, and the membrane cofactor protein pseudogene (Mcp-ps). To place myd in the genetic map, 75 affected progeny from an intersubspecific backcross of animals heterozygous for myd with Mus musculus castaneus were genotyped with Chr 8 microsatellite loci. The mutation maps between D8Mit30 and D8Mit75, an interval that is flanked by genes with human homologs at distal 4q. These results are consistent with the possibility that myd is the mouse homolog of FSHD.

Notes: Abstract Homeobox genes represent a class of transcription factors that play key roles in the regulation of embryogenesis and development. Here we report the identification of a homeobox-containing gene family that is highly conserved at both the nucleotide and amino acid levels in a diverse number of species. These species encompass both vertebrate and invertebrate phylogenies, ranging from Homo sapiens to Drosophila melanogaster. In humans, at least two homeobox sequences from this family were identified representing a previously reported member of this family as well as a novel homeobox sequence that we physically mapped to the 10q25.2–q26.3 region of human Chromosome (Chr) 10. Multiple members of this family were also detected in three additional vertebrate species including Equus caballus (horse), Gallus gallus (Chicken), and Mus musculus (mouse), whereas only single members were detected in Tripneustes gratilla (sea urchin), Petromyzon marinus (lamprey), Salmo salar (salmon), Ovis aries (sheep), and D. melanogaster (fruit fly).

Notes: Abstract The general motion of a thin elastic plate executing small deflections normal to its surface is considered. The edge of the plate is part simply supported, part clamped, part free and part along which the tractions are prescribed. Variational and reciprocity principles are established for the problem.
