Notes: The `microparacrystallite size' and `distortion parameter' of delignified ramie, hemp and jute have been determined – with the assumption that these materials are paracrystalline in nature – with the second and fourth central moments of X-ray diffraction line profiles. A new method of curvature correction has been developed. Background as well as non-additivity corrections have also been accounted for. Theories of determining the `microparacrystallite size' and the `distortion parameter' from single reflections independently from each of these two central moments have been developed, and described. Determination of these two parameters for several directions in the samples studied have been based on the above work. It has been shown that, in conformity with the recent findings of Hosemann & Balta Calleja [Ber. Bunsenges. Phys. Chem. (1980), 84, 91], the larger the paracrystalline distortion the smaller is the `microparacrystallite size'.

Notes: Abstract Coexistence of pyrochlore phase is one of the major problems in the preparation of lead magnesium niobate (PMN) based perovskites as it leads to deterioration of the dielectric and piezoelectric properties. Although the columbite precursor method substantially reduces the formation of pyrochlore phase, the success of this process depends on various process conditions such as reactivity of MgO, level of mixing or grinding, control of PbO volatility and reversibility of the reaction. Compositions in the system (1−x)[(1−y)PMN yPT]x BT (where PT = PbTiO3 and BT = BaTiO3) were prepared by the columbite route. Results show that addition of excess MgO and 4PbO·B2O3 glass before sintering not only eliminates the pyrochlore phase completely but also produces a series of ceramics with low firing temperature, very high dielectric constant, low dissipation factor, high d.c. resistivity and extremely low temperature coefficient of capacitance (TCC). The unusually low TCC values make these high K dielectrics suitable for application in multilayer ceramic capacitors having EIA specifications Y5P, Y5R and Y5S.

Notes: Abstract Work of fracture (WOF) of unidirectionally aligned sisal-glass hybrid laminates, especially glass core — sisal shell (SGS) laminates, have been studied using flat charpy test. Keeping the volume fraction of sisal at about 0.4, the WOF of SGS laminates linearly increased from 80.2 to 228 kJ m−2 by varying the volume fraction of glass at the core (V g core) from 0 to 0.2. However, further enhancement in WOF has been observed when the glass core is shifted from the midline towards the tensile side of the laminate with respect to impact. The specific work of fracture (165 kJ m−2) of SGS laminate atV g core 0.2 is identical to that of glass-reinforced polyester composites containing 0.6 volume fraction of glass. Addition of glass facings to SGS laminates increased its WOF by 20 to 30 kJ m−2 when the volume fraction of glass in the facings (V g facings) was about 0.04. The increase in resistance to compressive yielding that occurs by placing glass facings above a critical size (V g facings ≃ 0.04 in the present case) adversely affected the WOF of SGS hybrid laminates.

Notes: Abstract The mechanical properties of palmyrah and talipot fibres have been evaluated. Like other natural fibres, these fibres were also found to be viscoelastic in nature. The variation of the initial modulus (YM), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation (%) values were determined as a function of fibre fineness, test length and speed of testing. Change in test length from 10 to 100 mm palmyrah fibres produces a decrease in UTS from 220 to 161 MN m−2. Such variations were not observed in the case of talipot fibres except at low test length. The observed results have been explained in the light of the structural characteristics of these fibres namely chemical constituents espiral angle, number of defect centres, cell sizes, etc.

Notes: Abstract An attempt is made in this paper to arrive at an empirical relationship between the structure and properties of lignocellulosic fibres through computer analysis. Significant regression equations for ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and percentage elongation of these fibres with structural parameters such as chemical composition, microfibril angle etc., have been arrived at using best fit. The results clearly indicate a narrowing down of the deviations between the observed and derived values of mechanical parameters reported earlier. This is attributed to (a) consideration of several structural parameters in the regression equation and (b) the analysis being free from any assumptions. Finally the fracture modes observed in these fibres have been classified and this is explained in terms of structure-property relationships.

Notes: Abstract The effect of the initial stoichiometry variation (variation in Bi, Pb, Sr, Ca and Cu) on various structural and superconducting properties of Pb-doped Bi-based superconductor has been studied. The sample having the initial stoichiometry of (Bi1.8Pb0.4)Sr2Ca2.2Cu3O10 was found to give best structural and superconducting properties. The most important factors affectingJ c in the samples were the type of impurity phases present in the sample, their amount and distribution in the superconducting matrix. Cu-rich stoichiometry enhanced the formation of 110 K phase, but large amounts of undesirable impurities present in the samples decreasedJ c. The formation of 110 K phase and texturing of (001) planes in a sample depended on the period of heat treatment and stoichiometry.
