Notes: [Auszug] Cotton cut shoots. Aqueous extracts, from two-week old 'Karnak' or 'Giza 26' cotton seedlings, were prepared and each extract was divided into two portions : one portion was autoclaved and the other cold-sterilized by Menon's technique2. Fusarium solani was grown on these differently treated ...

Notes: Summary The present work aims at the elucidation of the effect of either cotton dust and its components or 2,4-D on the relative vigours of the three pathogenic fungi namely,Fusarium solani, Sclerotium bataticola andBotrytis fabae. Botrytis mycelial growth was found to be comparatively more sensitive to cotton dust thanFusarium andSclerotium. The elucidation of the effect of individual cotton dust components has shown that Gammexane is the most effective inhibitory component while sulphur and DDT caused slight inhibition. This inhibitory effect of Gammexane is more pronounced when mixed with DDT than with sulphur. 500 p.p.m. 2,4-D concentration inhibitedBotrytis growth more thanFusarium orSclerotium, 1 % 2,4-D concentration was proved to be fungicidal. 2,4-D suppressed the germinative potentialities ofFusarium andBotrytis conidia.

Notes: Summary The pathogenFusarium solani sensuSnyder &Hansen, as identified byW. L. Gordon was recorded in the present work as a new species causing cotton wilt in Egypt. Cotton dust in varying concentrations does not significally alter the normal infection of both “Menoufi” and “Giza 26” cotton varieties towardsFusarium. Similarly the potency ofFusarium filtrate to induce wilting did not appreciably change with previous treatment of cotton plants with cotton dust. On the other hand leaves treated with 2,4-D showed the maximal water loss. Percentage infected “Giza 26” cotton seedlings were found to be comparatively less in soil infected with 2,4-D treatedFusarium mycelium than in that infected with untreated mycelium.

Notes: Summary Artificial inoculation experiments have been carried out to study the effect of different concentrations of cotton dust on the chocolate-spot disease of bean leaves, induced byBotrytis fabae. Cotton dust, in high concentrations, does not significantly alter the severity of the disease. A considerable reduction in the size of the lesions and hence in percentage leaf area infected took place when bean cut shoots were dipped in a dilute solution of 2,4-D. Explanations were given on basis of anatomical, enzymatic and biochemical studies.

Notes: Summary In typical alluvial and calcareous soils of Egypt 5 levels of each of P and Fe were added to study their effect on the dry matter and on their uptake by tomato seedlings in greenhouse. Application of phosphorus significantly increased the dry matter yields and both P and Fe uptake by tomatoes grown on both soils. However, application of Fe had no significant effect on the dry matter and P-uptake by tomatoes grown on alluvial soil while they were significantly increased on the calcareous one.
