Notes:
The Ziegler polymerization of butene-1 has been studied in detail, by means of the pressure bottle technique. Eight principal conditions of polymerization have been varied. The amount and properties of the polymer have been studied, with particular emphasis on the atactic polymer. The polymers are generally from 50 to 70% atactic. Yields of over 300 g. polymer per gram of triisobutyl aluminum and intrinsic viscosities of over 2.5 have been obtained. The rate of polymerization goes through a sharp maximum at a catalyst ratio (Al/Ti) of 1.5-1.7. The kinetics are first-order in monomer, with a sharp drop in the rate constant after 1-5 hr. of polymerization.
