    Description: Black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP) and balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) are the two main tree species in the boreal forests of Quebec, Canada, and both show adventive-root formation. Little is known about the dynamics of adventive-root initiation and the pattern of length growth. To gain a better understanding of root growth, the root systems of 30 mature black spruce and 30 mature balsam fir were excavated until the root diameter had decreased to 2 cm. Tree ages ranged from 100 to more than 250 years. All trees showed only adventive roots; this was confirmed by dating the rootshoot interface. The youngest lateral roots were located close to ground level, whereas the oldest ones occurred lower in the stump, suggesting a process of renewal for the latter. Reconstruction of the development of the root system revealed a specific root-growth pattern. Adventive roots grew, on average, more than 60% of their total length in the year of initiation, whereas more than 93% of lateral-root elongation was recorded in the first 10 years after adventive roots were initiated. This growth pattern was found to be similar in the two tree species in terms of lateral-root development (p = 0.68). More variability was observed for the ramified adventive roots. However, two patterns emerged. First, around 10% of total elongation was completed in the same year as that of the corresponding lateral roots. Second, several ramified adventive roots were initiated in the same calendar year but delayed by several years relative to lateral adventive root initiation. No significant differences were observed between black spruce and balsam fir (p = 0.1).

    Description: In this review, we focus on the biotic parameters that are crucial to an understanding of the recruitment dynamics of North American boreal tree species following natural (fire, budworm infestation, windthrow) or human-induced (clearcut, partial cut) disturbances. The parameters we emphasize are (i) the production of seeds and asexual stems (both of which, we argue, are a function of basal area density), (ii) the dispersal of seeds by wind (or the dispersion of asexual stems) as a function of distance from source, (iii) dormant seed bank capacity, (iv) organic layer depth as a determinant of germinant mortality and asexual bud response, and (v) shade tolerance as a partial arbiter of the density of advanced regeneration. Having identified the gaps in our knowledge, we conclude by suggesting a short-term research agenda whose completion would lead to the parameterized functions that would constitute the recruitment subroutine in a landscape-scale forest dynamics simulator.

    Description: Inferences on climate change effects are reliable only if they are based on a causal relationship rather than simple statistical predictive capacity. To assess for causal links between climate and mature black spruce ( Picea mariana (Mills.) BSP) radial growth, we combined the use of wood anatomy, cambium phenology, climate and soil measurements (air temperature and humidity, precipitations, soil temperature and water content, photosynthetically active radiation), and a model selection approach proceeding backwards from a full model. Results show that the number of tracheids is responsible for 88% of the variation in ring width whereas mean tracheid diameter accounts for the remaining 12%. The number of tracheids produced depends on factors related to photosynthesis during tracheid production, i.e., daily light intensity and maximum temperature between the day of initiation and the day of cessation of tracheid production, plus soil temperature during August of the previous year which is an important period for determining the number of new needles produced. It is also important to consider duration of the period for tracheid production. These results imply that short-term climate change should increase black spruce radial growth. They also suggest that the typical use of post-growth ring width sampling individually linked to air temperature and precipitations is not sufficient to infer climate change effects accurately on radial growth where there is no strong single climatic limitation but multiple limitations instead.

    Description: This manuscript aims to evaluate the precision and accuracy of current methodology for estimating xylem phenology and tracheid production in trees. Through a simple approach, sampling at two positions on the stem of co-dominant black spruce trees in two sites of the boreal forest of Quebec, we were able to quantify variability among sites, between trees and within a tree for different variables. We demonstrated that current methodology is accurate for the estimation of the onset of xylogenesis, while the accuracy for the evaluation of the ending of xylogenesis may be improved by sampling at multiple positions on the stem. The pattern of variability in different phenological variables and cell production allowed us to advance a novel hypothesis on the shift in the importance of various drivers of xylogenesis, from factors mainly varying at the level of site (e.g., climate) at the beginning of the growing season to factors varying at the level of individual trees (e.g., possibly genetic variability) at the end of the growing season.

    Description: In boreal ecosystems, an increase in soil temperature can stimulate plant growth. However, cambium phenology in trees was better explained by air than soil temperature, which suggested that soil temperature is not the main limiting factor affecting xylogenesis. Since soil temperature and snowmelt are correlated to air temperature, the question whether soil temperature directly limits xylogenesis in the stem will remain unresolved without experiments disentangling air and soil temperatures. This study investigated the effects of an increase of 4 °C in soil temperature and a consequent 1-week earlier snowmelt on growth of black spruce [ Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP] in the boreal forest of Quebec, Canada. The soil of two natural stands at different altitudes was warmed up with heating cables during 2008–2010 and cambial phenology and xylem production were monitored weekly from April to October. The results showed no significant effect of the treatment on the phenological phases of cell enlargement and wall thickening and lignification. The number of cells produced in the xylem also did not differ between control and heated trees. These findings allowed the hypothesis of a direct influence of soil temperature on stem growth to be rejected and supported the evidence that, in the short term, air temperature is the main limiting factor for xylogenesis in trees of these environments.

    Description: A 20–40% reduction in soil moisture is projected for the boreal forest of Eastern Canada for the period 2070–99 relative to 1971–2000. In order to better predict the effects of a reduced water supply on the growth of balsam fir ( Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.), a dominant tree species of the boreal forest, we simulated 2 consecutive years of summer droughts (starting in July) by means of throughfall exclusion. Four 100-m 2 plots were established in 2010 with polyethylene sheets maintained 1.3–2 m aboveground and redirecting the water outside the plots. Wood microcores were extracted weekly from mature trees from April to October 2011 to analyse the time dynamics of wood formation in that year. The number of tracheids formed during and before treatment and their anatomical characteristics were determined through microscopic analyses. The growth of lateral and terminal branches and the water potential of balsam fir seedlings were also monitored. Throughfall exclusion significantly reduced soil water content by 5.8% in 2010 and 10.5% in 2011. Xylogenesis was affected significantly by the treatment. Tracheids were 16.1% smaller in diameter and their cell wall was 14.1% thicker during both years. The treatment delayed by more than a week the start of the tracheid differentiation process in the second year with a concomitant decrease (26%) in the number of tracheids produced. The seedlings displayed a 32% reduction in growth and a 40% reduction in leaf water potential. Our results suggest that a future regime of increased frequency and intensity of droughts could have negative effects on the duration of xylogenesis and the production of xylem cells in balsam fir.
