Notes: In this article, we demonstrate how the spatial distribution of x-ray linear attenuation coefficients within an object can be estimated from x-ray diffraction tomography data. The experimental arrangement to achieve this exploits a position sensitive detector and an analyzer crystal. The quality of reconstructed maps of linear attenuation coefficients is comparable to results obtained from conventional transmission computed tomography. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Shoals of fish vary in their degree of cohesiveness as certain conditions such as hunger, predation risk and shoal size vary: this study relates this variation to the benefits of shoaling. Shoals of bluntnose minnows, Pimephales notatus Rafinesque, consisting of different numbers of individuals were starved for 5, 24 or 72 h and allowed to forage in the presence or absence of a predator. Cohesiveness was measured as the dispersion offish within the shoal (the radius of the longest axis of the shoal corrected for the number of fish in the shoal), straggle frequency (the number of movements by individuals of at least 5 body lengths away from the shoal) and aggressive interactions between shoal members. Cohesiveness increased as shoal size and the benefits per individual increased. Cohesiveness also increased in the presence of a predator, as did the importance of shoaling as a means of reducing predation risk. Cohesivenes decreased as hunger level increased, possibly as a result of increased competition for food among shoal members.

Notes: Spawning time of female American plaice Hippoglossoides platessoides varied significantly with age. This effect, however, was not consistent across years. Generally, younger fish spawned earlier than older fish, but in the 1990s they spawned later than older fish. Spawning duration also varied with age, with younger fish generally having a longer spawning period than older fish. Changes in depth distribution were related to changes in both spawning time and duration. As depth increased, spawning time became later and duration became shorter. Fish 〈11 years old showed the largest change in both spawning time and depth distribution.

Notes: This study imposed stress upon spawning cod Gadus morhua in the laboratory to evaluate the potential effects of trawl avoidance on their reproductive physiology and spawning behaviour. Plasma cortisol levels of stressed fish were significantly higher than controls. Stressed cod initiated fewer courtships and often performed an altered courtship sequence. Both control and stressed fish spawned and there was little difference in the production of eggs, fertilization rate, hatching success or time to starvation of larvae. However, stressed fish produced abnormal larvae more frequently. Cod exposed to a chronic stressor are able to spawn successfully, but there appears to be a negative impact of this stress on their reproductive output, particularly through the production of abnormal larvae.

Notes: [Auszug] The hypothesis that the MAE is due to recalibration clearly predicts that if inspection of the moving pattern occurs in circumstances where there is not an incompatibility between visual and other information, then the MAE will be much reduced. In other words, there will be reduced adaptation if ...

Notes: [Auszug] Our method of spatial sampling is shown in Fig. 1 (see also ref. 3). We used an oscilloscope under computer control to construct two ribbons of light (12minx2deg arc) along each of which luminance was modulated sinusoidally. To avoid discontinuities at the ribbon edges, the contrast of this ...

Notes: [Auszug] Programs of the Brain. By J. Z. Young. Pp.325 (Oxford University Press: Oxford, 1978.) £5.95. THE conceptual problems of biological development are perhaps clarified, but made no easier of solution, by the notion that the genes encode, not so much characters in the old-fashioned sense, but ...

Notes: [Auszug] McMANUs1 has pointed out that most artists depict the left testicle of man lower than the right, in accordance with the facts2. An exception occurs in Rodin's famous sculpture L'Age d'Air an where the right testicle of the figure seems (from photographs we have seen) to hang lower than the left. We ...

Notes: [Auszug] Gregory's thesis is this: Illusions result from the operation of a primary constancy scaling mechanism" triggered by the presence in the figure of (learned) distance cues. This scaling occurs despite the fact that the observer is not conscious of depth in the figure and actually sees it as flat; ...
