Description: The McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (MDV) are among the oldest landscapes on Earth, and some landforms there present an intriguing apparent contradiction such that millions of years old surface deposits maintain their meter-scale morphology despite the fact that measured erosion rates are 0.1-4 m/Ma. We analyzed the concentration of cosmic ray-produced 10Be and 26Al in quartz sands from regolith directly above and below two well-documented ash deposits in the MDV, the Arena Valley ash (40Ar/39Ar age of 4.33 Ma) and the Hart ash (K-Ar age of 3.9 Ma). Measured concentrations of 10Be and 26Al are significantly less than expected given the age of the in situ air fall ashes and are best interpreted as reflecting the degradation rate of the overlying sediments. The erosion rate of the material above the Arena Valley ash that best explains the observed isotope profiles is 3.5 ± 0.41 x 10**-5 g/cm**2/yr (~0.19 m/Ma) for the past ~4 Ma. For the Hart ash, the erosion rate is 4.8 ± 0.21 x 10**-4 g/cm**2/yr (~2.6 m/Ma) for the past ~1 Ma. The concentration profiles do not show signs of mixing, creep, or deflation caused by sublimation of ground ice. These results indicate that the slow, steady lowering of the surface without vertical mixing may allow landforms to maintain their meter-scale morphology even though they are actively eroding.

In:  Supplement to: Morgan, Daniel J; Putkonen, Jaakko; Balco, Greg; Stone, John (2011): Degradation of glacial deposits quantified with cosmogenic nuclides, Quartermain Mountains, Antarctica. Earth Surface Processes and Landforms, 36(2), 217-228, https://doi.org/10.1002/esp.2039
    Publication Date: 2023-12-13
Description: Many glacial deposits in the Quartermain Mountains, Antarctica present two apparent contradictions regarding the degradation of unconsolidated deposits. The glacial deposits are up to millions of years old, yet they have maintained their meter-scale morphology despite the fact that bedrock and regolith erosion rates in the Quartermain Mountains have been measured at 0.1-4.0 m/Ma. Additionally, ground ice persists in some Miocene-aged soils in the Quartermain Mountains even though modeled and measured sublimation rates of ice in Antarctic soils suggest that without any recharge mechanisms ground ice should sublimate in the upper few meters of soil on the order of 10**3 to 10**5 years. This paper presents results from using the concentration of cosmogenic nuclides beryllium-10 (10Be) and aluminum-26 (26Al) in bulk sediment samples from depth profiles of three glacial deposits in the Quartermain Mountains. The measured nuclide concentrations are lower than expected for the known ages of the deposits, erosion alone does not always explain these concentrations, and deflation of the tills by the sublimation of ice coupled with erosion of the overlying till can explain some of the nuclide concentration profiles. The degradation rates that best match the data range 0.7-12 m/Ma for sublimation of ice with initial debris concentrations ranging 12-45% and erosion of the overlying till at rates of 0.4-1.2 m/Ma. Overturning of the tills by cryoturbation, vertical mixing, or soil creep is not indicated by the cosmogenic nuclide profiles, and degradation appears to be limited to within a few centimeters of the surface. Erosion of these tills without vertical mixing may partially explain how some glacial deposits in the Quartermain Mountains maintain their morphology and contain ground ice close to the surface for millions of years.

Notes: Abstract Research has indicated that disabled and nondisabled persons experience communication strained by high levels of uncertainty for both communicators. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of being disabled on the academic progress of disabled college students. It was felt that academic success will be contingent upon positive communication with faculty, fellow students, and university personnel. A questionnaire assessing the campus' social climate, the quality of its programs and instruction, and the students' academic and career expectations was administered to 100 disabled students. Analyses of the data revealed that the disabled students' motivation was significantly related to their level of social alienation, while the students' perceived competence was most related to their level of social adjustment. The theoretical implications of these findings and avenues for future research are discussed.

Notes: The backbone cleavages of 14 sodiated tripeptides of the series Gly-Gly-Xxx, where Xxx = Gly, Ala, Val, Leu, Ile, Phe, Tyr, Met, Glu, Pro, Trp, Lys, His and Arg, were studied in a hybrid tandem mass spectrometer. A C-terminal y-type ion of the form y1 + Na + H was noted in all cases studied. N-Terminal bn + Na + 17, bn + Na - H and an + Na - H ions, along with internal fragments, were also noted. Because information on sodium affinities of amino acids is limited, the sodiated tripeptides studied were compared not only with the rank ordering of amino acid sodium affinities, but also on the basis of available proton affinities. A linear relationship between log[(y1 + Na + H)/(b2 + Na + 17)] and the proton affinity of the C-terminal amino acid substituents was found: as the proton affinity of the C-terminal residue increases, the fraction of y1 ion formation increases. When the C-terminal substituent was more basic than Trp, the correlation does not hold, probably because the highly basic amino acids, Lys, His, and Arg, are cationized on the side-chain instead of on the terminal amino group.

Notes: The intensities of the y-type and b-type ions in the tandem mass spectra of the [M + 1]+ ions of acylated oligomers of alanine and glycine give evidence that these ions are not structurally similar to the [M + 1]+ ions of the free oligomers. For example, the intensities do not follow statistical or linear free energy relationships as would be expected if they were homologous. Instead there are sharp differences in intensities: the y3 ions are considerably more intense than expected, and the b2 ions are less intense. The ions whose intensities differ sharply seem to involve cleavages where the amount of stabilization of a product of cyclization changes when the terminal nitrogen is acylated.

Notes: The backbone cleavages for three series of protonated N-benzoyl tripeptide ions were studied in a hybrid tandem mass spectrometer: (i) benzoyl-Gly-Gly-Xxx, where Xxx = Gly, Ala, Val, Leu, Ile, Phe, Tyr, Met, Glu, Pro and Trp, (ii) benzoyl-Gly-Xxx-Gly, where Xxx = Gly, Ala, Leu, Phe, Tyr, Met and Trp, and (iii) benzoyl-Xxx-Gly-Gly, where Xxx = Gly, Ala, Val, Leu, Ile, Phe, Tyr, Met, Pro and Trp. C-Terminal y-type ions and N-terminal a- and b-type ions were noted in all three cases. For benzoyl-Gly-Gly-Xxx, a linear relationship between log (y1/b2) and the proton affinity of the C-terminal amino acid substituents was found: as the proton affinity of the C-terminal residue increases, the fraction of y1 ion formation increases. A similar relationship was noted for the benzoyl-Xxx-Gly-Gly tripeptides between log (y2/b1) and the proton affinity of the N-terminal amino acid substituent: as the proton affinity of the N-terminal residue increases, the fraction of b1 ion formation increases. For the series benzoyl-Gly-Xxx-Gly, these relationships did not hold true. These observations point to similar reaction pathways throughout the benzoyl-Gly-Gly-Xxx series and also similar pathways throughout the benzoyl-Xxx-Gly-Gly, but pathways that are substituent dependent for benzoyl-Gly-Xxx-Gly. The increased correlation coefficients for benzoyl-Gly-Gly-Xxx and benzoyl-Xxx-Gly-Gly when compared with the free tripeptides, suggest that fewer interfering competitive reactions exist, as fewer possibilities for internal hydrogen bonding exist in the N-benzoyl derivatives versus the free compounds.

Notes: The backbone cleavages of protonated tripeptide ions of the series Gly - Gly - Xxx, where Xxx = Gly, Ala, Val, d-Leu, l-Leu, Ile, Phe, Tyr, Trp, Pro, Met and Glu, were studied in a hybrid tandem mass spectrometer. C-Terminal y-type ions and N-terminal a- and b-type ions were noted. A linear relationship between log (y1/b2) and the proton affinity of the C-terminal amino acid substituents was found: as the proton affinity of the C-terminal residue increases, the fraction of y1 ion formation increases. When the C-terminal substituent was more basic than Trp, the b2 ion was not observed. It is likely that the site of protonation changes from peptide bond to side-chain for just these residues, Lys, His and Arg.
