Notes: Abstract Combustion synthesis or self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) has been used for the first time to produce glass–ceramic materials. The materials produced by the technique have a glassy matrix (aluminoborate glass) and crystalline TiB2 particles, of about 0.5 μm. The combustion characteristics and microstructures of the synthesized materials are presented.

Notes: Abstract The microstructures and compositions of multicomponent Ti–B–N, Ti–Si–B–N, Ti–Si–C–N, and Ti–Al–C–N films deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering using composite targets and produced by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) have been investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy. Auger spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Depending on the chemical composition of the film deposited, different single-phase crystalline films were observed. The sputtering process included sputter cleaning prior to the DC magnetron sputter deposition of Ti and TiN interlayers prior to DC magnetron sputter deposition of the multicomponent films from multicomponent targets. The films produced were characterized in terms of their microhardness, wear resistance, high-temperature oxidation conducted in air. and corrosion resistance in a solution of 5NH2SO4 at room temperature.

Notes: Abstract Multicomponent Ti–Si–B–N coatings were deposited on high-speed steel (HSS) substrates by reactive magnetron sputtering using a SHS TiB + 20 wt% Si target. The influences of the substrate temperature, bias voltage, and nitrogen partial pressure on the structure and the elemental compositions of the films were studied. The films were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Auger spectroscopy (AES), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results of HRTEM analysis indicated the formation of an ordered–disordered structure with fine crystalline grains of hexagonal Ti(B,N) x phase and amorphous integrain layers. The stoichiometry of the Ti(B,N) x phase was strongly affected by PVD process parameters. The films were characterized in terms of their microhardness and wear resistance. The reasons for the high value of microhardness appear to be the result of stoichiometric phase composition, compressive residual stress, and dense and fine microstructure of the Ti–Si–B–N coatings. The tribological wear test results indicated the superior wear-resistant properties of Ti–Si–B–N coatings compared to TiN and Ti(C,N) coatings.

Notes: Abstract The synthesis of the TiNi intermetallic compound using the thermal explosion mode of the combustion synthesis technique has been used to determine the heat of fusion, ΔH m (7.77 kcal mol−1), of the TiNi intermetallic and the heat capacity,C p1 (17.96 cal mol−1 K−1), of the liquid-phase TiNi. The effect of heating rate and degree of dilution of the Ti + Ni powder compact reactants with previously synthesized TiNi on the ignition,T ig, and combustion,T c, temperatures in an argon atmosphere have been determined. It was found thatT c was dependent on heating rate and dilution with TiNi, whereasT ig remained unchanged with respect to these two process variables.

Notes: Abstract Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) of powder compacts is a novel processing technique currently being developed as a route for the production of engineering ceramics and other advanced materials. The process, which is also referred to as combustion synthesis, provides energy- and cost-saving advantages over the more conventional processing routes for these materials. At the same time, the rapid heating and cooling rates provide a potential for the production of metastable materials with new and, perhaps, unique properties. This paper reviews the research that has been, and is being, undertaken in this exciting new processing route for high-technology materials and examines the underlying theoretical explanations which will, eventually, lead to improved control over processing parameters and product quality.

Notes: Abstract High-strength age-hardenable nickel-base superalloy Inconel X-750, is susceptible to severe intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) when used in the triple heat-treated condition. In this research, the slow strain-rate technique has been employed to evaluate the stress corrosion cracking susceptibility of alloy X-750 under simulated nuclear pressurized water reactor (PWR) conditions, using an automated autoclave system at 8 × 106Nm−2 pressure and 289° C temperature. The alloys produced via electroslag refining (ESR) or vacuum arc refining (VAR) processing routes containing 0.004% and 0.011% sulphur, respectively, were solution annealed at either 1075 or 1240° C for 2h and water quenched followed by ageing in the 704 to 871° C temperature range for up to 200h, followed by air cooling or furnace cooling. The scanning electron microscopy performed on fractured surfaces revealed that Inconel X-750 processed through the ESR route, solution annealed at 1240° C for 2h and water quenched, aged at 871° C for 200 h and furnace cooled provided the best combination of strength, ductility and resistance to SCC. A less sensitized area adjacent to the grain boundary was responsible for the improvement in properties and the alloy X-750 is recommended for PWR applications in the above conditions of processing and heat treatment.

Notes: Abstract The microstructural characteristics of NiTi intermetallic shape memory compounds produced by combustion synthesis have been investigated. It was found that the microstructure consists mainly of NiTi parent phase and NiTi2 second phase. The faceted or coarse dendritic NiTi2 phase, which is produced using a low cooling rate of the synthesized liquid product, can be modified to provide an evenly distributed, fine dendritic structure by increasing the cooling rate. This fine dendritic product can be readily hot-rolled into plate exhibiting the shape memory effect (SME). The initial nickel particle size has an important influence on the microstructure and also on the SME transition temperature. The morphology of the microstructure can also be modified to that of conventionally produced alloy by solution treatment. It is proposed that the synthesis reaction mechanism occurs by two combustion stages, i.e. precombustion and combustion. The particle size plays a key role in the precombustion stage.

Notes: Summary The Irish approach to the computer processing of grassland relevés is introduced. A suite of programs in Fortran IV has been developed for the purpose. The preparation and analysis of the relevés using these programs is explained. The cost and ecological effectiveness is discussed. It is concluded that the approach is not radically different to the familiar Braun-Blanquet technique of tabular comparison of relevés.
