Description: Some practical applications of Landsat MSS and TM data are discussed, including renewable resource inventory and monitoring; water resources inventory and assessment; and urban land use analysis. Consideration is also given to the geological applications of Landsat MSS and TM data. These applications include: mapping major geological units; rock-type recognition; mapping volcanic surface deposits; and mapping linears. The TM and MSS spectral bands corresponding to the data applications are listed in a table.

Description: Techniques to provide land use up-date information using remotely sensed data and automatic data processing technology are being developed. The approach utilizes multispectral scanners, the associated data analysis station, and the pattern recognition programs to identify and classify land surface characteristics, including wetlands, and to convert these data to demonstration type experiments in the various disciplines.

Description: NASA's Global Biology Research Program and its goals for greater understanding of planetary biological processes are discussed. Consideration is given to assessing major pathways and rates of exchange of elements such as carbon and nitrogen, extrapolating local rates of anaerobic activities, determining exchange rates of ocean nutrients, and developing models for the global cycles of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus. Satellites and sensors operating today are covered: the Nimbus, NOAA, and Landsat series. Block diagrams of the software and hardware for a typical ground data processing and analysis system are provided. Samples of the surface cover data achieved with the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer, the Multispectral Scanner, and the Thematic Mapper are presented, as well as a productive capacity model for coastal wetlands. Finally, attention is given to future goals, their engineering requirements, and the necessary data analysis system.

Description: This paper describes an analysis of a data set in which satellite acquired microwave data (Seasat Synthetic Aperture Radar) have been registered with Landsat Multispectral Scanner data and the combined data processed using conventional multichannel spectral pattern recognition programs. Results of this analysis indicate that the combined data set offers improvement in surface classification that is significant to certain applications. A brief description of the registration procedure is given. The improvement in results rendered to selected resource management applications is discussed. The presented results are preliminary due to the short time that the satellite microwave data have been available; however, a more comprehensive analysis is in progress and will be completed during the coming year.

Description: An overview of the status and potential of artificial intelligence-driven expert systems in the role of image data analysis is presented. An expert system is defined and its structure is summarized. Three such systems designed for image interpretation are outlined. The use of an expert system to detect changes on the earth's surface is discussed, and the components of a knowledge-based image interpretation system and their make-up are outlined. An example of how such a system should work for an area in the tropics where deforestation has occurred is presented as a sequence of situation/action decisions.

Description: The use of expert systems for the interpretation of remote-sensing data is discussed. Expert-system architectures are described; the systems in use, under development, or proposed in various scientific and industrial fields are listed in a table; and three image-interpretation systems are briefly characterized. It is found that expert systems have the potential to perform repetitive interpretation of image data compiled from various remote-sensing satellites, especially to detect changes over time as in the case of deforestation. A system comprising an image interpreter, change interpreter, a cause interpreter, and a global data base is outlined and illustrated with a diagram.
