Parametric decay of an electromagnetic wave into electrostatic waves of high or intermediate frequencies in a magnetized plasma is studied theoretically. Three processes are included: (ia) decay into two high-frequency waves, max(ωpe,Ωe)〈Ω1,2〈ωUH (ωpe is electron plasma frequency, Ωe is electron gyrofrequency, ωUH is upper-hybrid frequency, and Ω1,2 are frequencies of the daughter waves); (ib) decay into two intermediate-frequency waves, min(ωp,Ωe)〉Ω1,2〉ωLH (ωLH is the lower-hybrid frequency); and (ii) decay into one of each of these wave modes. The ion motion is neglected; consequently, the coupling coefficient vanishes in the infinite pump-wavelength approximation. The calculation is then carried to the next order in k/K where k,K are the wave numbers of the pump wave and the daughter waves. This approximation is appropriate when the daughter waves are described in the electrostatic approximation. Explicit expressions for the growth rates of the three processes are obtained.
