Notes: Strategic planning of the supply chain is an important decision problem determining the long-term survival and prosperity of companies in the manufacturing, retail, and other industrial sectors. In general such companies rely on their information systems to acquire the essential data that are used in their planning models. The interaction of information systems and decision modelling, and the progressive transformation of data, into information, and knowledge is a key process underlying any decision support system (DSS) for strategic, tactical or operational planning. In this paper we consider a DSS for supply chain planning (SCP) decisions. The SCP system has an embedded decision engine that uses a two-stage stochastic program as a paradigm for optimisation under uncertainty. The system has been used for decision making in diverse domains, including automotive manufacturing and consumer products.

Notes: Abstract Generalised Assignment Problems (GAP), traditionally solved by Integer Programming techniques, are addressed in the light of current Constraint Programming methods. A scheduling application from manufacturing, based on a modified GAP, is used to examine the performance of each technique under a variety of problem characteristics. Experimental evidence showed that, for a set of assignment problems, Constraint Logic Programming (CLP) performed consistently better than Integer Programming (IP). Analysis of the CLP and IP processes identified ways in which the search was effective. The insight gained from the analysis led to an Integer Programming approach with significantly improved performance. Finally, the issue of collaboration between the two contrasting approaches is examined with respect to ways in which the solvers can be combined in an effective manner.

Notes: Abstract The use of a primal dual interior point method (PD) based optimizer as a robust linear programming (LP) solver is now well established. Instead of replacing the sparse simplex algorithm (SSX), the PD is increasingly seen as complementing it. The progress of PD iterations is not hindered by the degeneracy or stalling problem of SSX, indeed it reaches the “near optimum” solution very quickly. The SSX algorithm, in contrast, is not affected by the numeral instabilities which slow down the convergence of the PD near the optimal face. If the solution to the LP problem is non-unique, the PD algorithm converges to an interior point of the solution set while the SSX algorithm finds an extreme point solution. To take advantage of the attractive properties of both the PD and the SSX, we have designed a hybrid framework whereby crossover from PD to SSX can take place at any stage of the PD optimization run. The crossover to SSX involves the partition of the PD solution set to active and dormant variables. In this paper we examine the practical difficulties in partitioning the solution set, we discuss the reliability of predicting the solution set partition before optimality is reached and report the results of combining exact and inexact prediction with SSX basis recovery.

Notes: Abstract An Augmented Makespan Assignment Problem (AMAP), which is a variation of theGeneralised Assignment Problem (GAP), is analysed in this paper. In this problem, weminimise the makespan for producing several products with each on one of several machines. The data instances are such that some of the available machines are identical, which in turnleads to mixed integer programming problems that have many optimal integer solutions. Most commercial software for mathematical programming therefore has problems provingthat the solution they find is an optimal one. Even optimisation software that does someinteger preprocessing on the system of linear relations has problems in solving a straightforwardformulation of the model. Darby-Dowman et al. investigated this model and foundit difficult to solve as an IP. We show that if more of the model structure is highlighted at themodelling stage, and these are exploited in preprocessing the formulation before the problemmatrix is produced, then we get easily solvable integer programs for the data instances underconsideration. We give computational results for five different commercial codes with andwithout our preprocessing at the modelling stage.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we present an alternative multi-stage generalized upper bounds (GUB) based approach for detecting an embedded pure network structure in an LP problem. In order to identify a GUB structure, we use two different approaches; the first is based on the notion of Markowitz merit count and the second exploits independent sets in the corresponding graphs. Our computational experiments show that the multi-stage GUB algorithm based on these approaches performs favourably when compared with other well known algorithms.

Notes: Abstract LP models are usually constructed using index sets and data tables which are closely related to the attributes and relations of relational database (RDB) systems. We extend the syntax of MPL, an existing LP modelling language, in order to connect it to a given RDB system. This approach reuses existing modelling and database software, provides a rich modelling environment and achieves model and data independence. This integrated software enables Mathematical Programming to be widely used as a decision support tool by unlocking the data residing in corporate databases.

Notes: Trichoderma viride QM 9414 growth characteristics on glucose were investigated in single stage continuous stirred tank reactor operation and growth parameters μmax, Ks, QO2 identified. Multistage stirred tank fermentors in series with the first stage utilizing glucose and the subsequent stages utilizing cellulose yielded results in general agreement with theoretical predictions. Significant increase in enzyme productivity over single stage fermentation was obtained in multistage operation.

Notes: Continuous processing has been applied to human plasma fractionation by the cold ethanol process. On-line pH control of ±0.05 pH units, flow control of ±1%, and temperature control of ±0.5°C have been achieved. Optimization of precipitation pHs has been carried out for purifying plasma protein fractions and albumin. During precipitation, the irreversible nature of the pH overshoots has been demonstrated. Compared to the batch processing mode, the continuous scheme produces an increased yield between 6 to 11%.
