    Notes: Summary The uptake of239Pu and241Am from different clay mineral-organic matter-sand mixtures simulating contrasting soil types was examined in growth chamber experiments. The mixtures represented various combinations of organic matter (0, 5 and 10%), kaolinite (1∶1 type) and montomorillonite (2∶1 type) clay minerals, each at the levels of 5, 10 and 25%, and purified quartz sand (as filler). Results indicated a marked reduction in uptake of both239Pu and241Am with increase in organic matter as well as clay content of the mixtures. The Pu Concentration Ratios (CRs) ranged from (2.5–7.0)×10−3 in the case of kaolinite-organic matter mixtures, and from (0.9–5.5)×10−3 in the case of montmorillonite-organic matter mixtures. The corresponding values of Am Concentration Ratios (CRs) obtained were (1.9–725.4)×10−3 in the case of kaolinite-organic matter mixtures, and between (0.7–3.5)×10−3 for the montmorillonite-organic matter mixtures. Reduction in the uptake of241Am with increasing clay content was more pronounced in the montmorillonite clay-organic matter mixtures as compared to that in the case of kaolinite-organic matter mixtures. While similar qualitative reduction in239Pu CRs with increasing clay content was observed, the reduction was less marked than in the case of241Am. The values for Am CRs were higher than the corresponding Pu CRs in kaolinite based mixtures whereas in the case of montmorillonite-organic matter mixtures Pu CRs exceeded the Am CRs. Increasing organic matter content and its interaction with both kaolinite and montmorillonite clay minerals were found to be equally effective in reducing the uptake of239Pu as well as241Am by plants.

    Notes: Summary The absorption of gamma-emitting fission products106Ru,125Sb,137Cs and144Ce and activation products59Fe,58Co.54Mn and65Zn by rice plants grown on two contrasting tropical soils, namely, a blak soil (pellustert) and a laterite (oxisol), and the effects of flooding were studied under controlled conditions. Results indicated greater uptake of106Ru and125Sb from the black soil than from the laterite. In contrast, the uptake of144Ce and137Cs was greater in the laterite than in the black soil. Flooding treatment enhanced the uptake of all these fission products by rice plants in the laterite soil whereas this effect was observed only for125Sb and137Cs in the black soil. The plant uptake of activation products from the two soil types showed maximum accumulation of65Zn followed by54Mn,59Fe and58Co in both soil types. Besides, uptake of these nuclides was greater from the laterite soil than from the black soil. Flooding treatment for rice while showing a reduction of59Fe uptake, showed an increase in plant uptake of58Co,54Mn and65Zn in both soil types.

    Notes: Summary The absorption of radium from solution, by plants, has been compared with that of calcium, active strontium being used as a label for the calcium. It was found that radium was preferentially retained by the roots and discriminated against in passage to the shoots. However, the uptake and distribution of radium was influenced by ethylenediaminetetra acetic acid (EDTA) and citrate at the concentrations employed in water culture media to keep iron in solution. There was little discrimination against radium after plants had grown for a week in active nutrient solution when EDTA was present, but in the presence of citrate radium moved less rapidly by a factor of about 0.3. In the early stages of treatment, less than a day, the results with citrate were comparable with those of EDTA, whence it is inferred that the decrease in transfer to the shoots is dependent upon the relative rates at which the two complexes decompose.

    Notes: Summary The uptake of239Pu and241Am from two contrasting soil types, namely, a laterite (Oxisol) and a medium black (Vertisol-Pellustert) and also from nutrient solution as influenced by pre-chelation with synthetic chelating agents, DTPA and EDTA was studied. Results from soil-plant studies indicated a significant increase in uptake of239Pu and241Am by plants from both soil types when added as239Pu-DTPA,239Pu-EDTA,241Am-DTPA or241Am-EDTA as compared to the treatments where transuranics were added in ionic (nitrate) forms. Concentration ratios (CRs) for Pu and Am in plant shoots increased by factors ranging from 3 to 700 depending on the soil type and the complexing ligand. Nutrient solution studies also revealed a marked enhancement in uptake as well as translocation of Pu and Am in plants due to supply of chelated transuranics. The shoots CRs in the case of Pu(NO3)4, Pu-EDTA, and Pu-DTPA were 0.11±0.02, 2.94±0.35 and 4.35±0.41, respectively. The observed values of Am CRs in shoots in the case of Am(NO3)3, Am-EDTA and Am-DTPA were 1.55±0.18, 1.86±0.25 and 2.85±0.40, respectively. An increase in the values of ‘Transport index’ by 6 to 50-folds was observed in the case of Am and Pu, respectively, when added as chelates of DTPA in comparison to the nitrate form of the radionuclides. EDTA complexes of the transuranics were observed to be less effective than corresponding DTPA complexes in enhancing the uptake of Pu and Am by plants.
