Abstract The mechanism of metal corrosion in aqueous sulfuric acid solutions was studied and it was established that the SO 4 2− anion content plays a decisive part in the dependence of the corrosion rate on the acid concentration. The corrosive action of the SO 4 2− anion was analyzed in relation to physical and chemical adsorption phenomena on the surface of d-metals.
