    Notes: Many environmental variables are known to be involved in the inactivation processes affecting enteric bacteria in seawater. It is commonly believed that bacteria may attempt to reduce adverse effects by adhering together, thereby decreasing the surface area exposed to the hostile environment. This mechanism may be described as self-protection and should enhance the survival of the bacterial population.Controlled laboratory experiments, epifluorescence microscopy, and Coulter counter analysis were used to examine and elucidate the inactivation mechanisms for the enteric bacterium E. coli. In general, the survival of E. coli was found to be enhanced with increasing initial cell concentration in the absence of any suspended solids.

    Notes: Ten individual muscles (Semimembranosus, Semitendinosus, Biceps femorus, Gluteus medius, Longissimusu muscle, Psoas major, Serratus ventralis, Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, and Triceps brachii) from 10 pork carcasses were removed and analyzed for selected minerals. Individual muscles contained relatively large quantities (mg/100g) of K, Na, P and Mg with smaller amounts of Ca, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn but varied between muscles with differences of one- to twofold. Semimembranosus had lesser amounts of Ca, Cu, Fe, and Mn than any other muscle studied. In general, the mineral content of leg, loin, and shoulder were different. The shoulder muscles had a greater quantity of Fe and Zn present in their muscles than leg or loin.

    Notes: Abstract  Patterns in the composition of assemblages of microbat species sampled during the late dry season (the ‘build-up’) in north Australian savannas were assessed against a range of environmental factors as well as four a priori defined habitat types (riparian, escarpments, coastal and woodlands). Distinct species assemblages were most strongly associated with topographic and climatic variables. There were also limited associations with vegetation structure, fire and local roost potential but no associations with insects or water availability. Total species diversity at sample sites was associated with distance to rivers and rainfall. In general, species assemblages were not clearly defined and the number of significant environmental associations was relatively few. We compare these associations with those reported for bat assemblages elsewhere in Australia.

    Notes: A previous study (Braithwaite & Muller 1997) reported substantial declines in mammal abundance over the period 1986–1993 for a large study area (300 km2) within Kakadu National Park in the tropical savannas of northern Australia. This decline was reported as being a ‘natural’ response to fluctuating groundwater levels, driven by runs of poor wet seasons. We resampled mammals in this area in 1999, following a series of unusually good wet seasons, and examined the prediction that mammal numbers should have recovered. Increases in abundance were evident for four species: the smallest dasyurid (red-cheeked dunnart Sminthopsis virginiae) and the three smallest rodents (delicate mouse Pseudomys delicatulus, western chestnut mouse Pseudomys nanus and grassland melomys Melomys burtoni). In contrast, the abundance of all mammals combined and that for seven individual mammal species (northern quoll Dasyurus hallucatus, fawn antechinus Antechinus bellus, common brushtail possum Trichosurus vulpecula, northern brown bandicoot Isoodon macrourus, dusky rat Rattus colletti, black-footed tree-rat Mesembriomys gouldii and pale field rat Rattus tunneyi) continued to decline. The decline in abundance of these mammal species is consistent with limited observations elsewhere in northern Australia. Although far from conclusive, these observations suggest that the biota of the vast relatively undisturbed tropical savannas can no longer be assumed to be intact nor safe. Further research is needed to test this possible pattern of decline and, if confirmed, to identify and ameliorate the processes contributing to it.

    Notes: Up to date values for nutrient composition of foods are required so nutritionally optimum diets can be determined. Selected minerals in longissimus muscle and ground beef from 20 beef carcasses were determined by inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy. Ground beef contained greater (P〈0.003) amounts of Na, Ca, Fe, Mg and Zn than longissimus muscle. Longissimus muscle contained more (P〈0.0073) K and P. The amount of Cu was the same (P〈0.699). There were no detectable amounts of Mn observed Mean percentages on an “as is basis” for moisture (71.7 vs 65), protein (23.2 vs 18.8) fat (4.5 vs 16) and ash (0.6 vs 1.0) for longissimus muscle and ground beef, respectively, were different.
