Description: Since the 1990s, global academic publishing has been transformed by digitisation, consolidation and the rise of the internet. The data produced by commercially owned citation indexes increasingly defines legitimate academic knowledge. Publication in prestigious ‘high impact’ journals can be traded for academic promotion, tenure and job-security. African researchers and publishers labour in the shadows of a global knowledge system dominated by ‘Northern’ journals and by global publishing conglomerates. This book goes beyond the numbers. It tells the story of how the Ghanaian academy is being transformed by this bibliometric economy. It offers a rich account of the voices and perspectives of Ghanaian academics and African journal publishers. How, where and when are Ghana’s researchers disseminating their work, and what do these experiences reveal about an unequal global science system? Is there pressure to publish in ‘reputable’ international journals, what role do supervisors, collaborators and mentors play, and how do academics manage in conditions of scarcity? Putting the insights of more than 40 Ghanaian academics into dialogue with journal editors and publishers from across the continent, the book highlights creative responses, along with the emergence of new regional research ecosystems. This is an important Africa-centred analysis of Anglophone academic publishing on the continent and its relationship to global science.

Description: How should we tell the histories of academic disciplines? All too often, the political and institutional dimensions of knowledge production are lost beneath the intellectual debates. This book redresses the balance. Written in a narrative style and drawing on archival sources and oral histories, it depicts the complex pattern of personal and administrative relationships that shape scholarly worlds. Focusing on the field of social anthropology in twentieth-century Britain, this book describes individual, departmental and institutional rivalries over funding and influence. It examines the efforts of scholars such as Bronislaw Malinowski, Edward Evans-Pritchard and Max Gluckman to further their own visions for social anthropology. Did the future lie with the humanities or the social sciences, with addressing social problems or developing scholarly autonomy? This new history situates the discipline's rise within the post-war expansion of British universities and the challenges created by

Notes: New cermet film structures suitable for selective solar absorbers, composed of two cermet sublayers with identical metal volume fractions in each sublayer, on metal reflectors with an antireflection dielectric layer coating are described. The absorbing cermet sublayers have thickness and volume fractions such that solar radiation is absorbed internally and by phase cancellation interference. They are substantially transparent in the thermal infrared region. Modeling of the new cermet layer structures has revealed a number of different selective surfaces, involving a variety of practical cermet materials, with better performance than recent published results. For example, the best predicted ratio of absorptance to normal emittance α/ε at room temperature is 46 for a Cu-SiO2 cermet, 49 for a Cu-Al2O3 cermet and a Au-Al2O3 cermet. The best laboratory results of α/ε at room temperature thus far are 46 for a Cu-SiO2 cermet, and 45 for a Au-Al2O3 cermet. From computer modeling, using published experimental dielectric functions of a Co-Al2O3 cermet, absorptance of 0.93 and normal emittance of 0.026 at 50 °C (α/ε=36) could be obtained for a two-cermet-sublayer film on a Mo reflector with an Al2O3 antireflection layer.

Notes: This paper interprets private label marketing as a retailer instrument for overcoming the double-marginalization problem inherent in the distribution of well-known manufacturer brands. Retailers with some degree of market power carry private label substitutes for popular national brands in order to capture more profit from the vertical structures they share with brand manufacturers. The net effect of private label marketing is to improve the performance of distribution channels. After presenting a formal model and deriving analytical results, the paper gathers some empirical evidence that supports these results.

Notes: A new cermet film structure of solar thermal absorber is presented. The typical film is similar to that of the single cermet layer case, except the single cermet layer is replaced by two isotropic cermet sublayers. The calculated results have been shown that low- and high-temperature performances using this new selective surface structure are excellent. The value of the ratio of absorptance to normal emittance α/ε, 46, for deposited film has been achieved.

Notes: : The authors conducted a mail survey of 600 employers in the government and private sectors who were thought to hire water track environmental engineers. Of a total of 148 respondents, over 80 percent employed a combined total of over 2,800 environmental engineers. The survey addressed two basic questions: (1) what is the quality of graduate education recently trained engineers have received, and (2) what effect does a nonengineering undergraduate degree have on an engineering graduate student's employment potential. In answer to the first question, respondents indicated that engineering graduates were deficient in report writing, business law (contracts and specifications), economics and finance, and practical design. Many employers stated that students could better prepare themselves for employment by (1) obtaining professional experience through internships and summer or part-time jobs, and (2) learning to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. In answer to the second question, 50 percent of the respondents indicated that engineers without an engineering undergraduate degree would not necessarily be limited in their abilities to perform engineering duties.
