    Notes: : Truncated samples arise in a variety of hydrologic situations in which certain values of the variables of interest are unobservable. Remotely sensed data, for example, are truncated below the resolution level of the sensor: all objects smaller than the resolution of the instrument are not detected and their characteristics cannot be recorded. Many other situations occur in hydrologic studies where a sampling procedure or method yields truncated samples. The main results on this work on truncated samples are: (1) a general expression for the probability distribution function of a truncated random variable; (2) a description of the effect of truncation on the distribution function of several important probability models and on their parameters; and (3) development of a parameter estimation methodology for parameter estimation from truncated samples.From the theoretical results of this paper and the analysis of drought-related data, we have concluded that: (1) truncated sampling can be advantageous, especially when certain ranges of values are difficult or impossible to observe; (2) the developed method for truncated sample analysis leads to efficient and accurate parameter estimation and statistical inference on truncated data; and (3) the developed method for truncated sample analysis can also yield the parameters and the distribution of the entire population when only a subset of that population is observable.

    Notes: : Coastal central California is a region that has never been the subject of tree-ring studies. New tree-ring chronologies developed from cores of big cone spruce (Pseudotusuga macrocarpa (Torr.) Mayr.) growing in the Transverse Ranges of central Santa Barbara county were used to reconstruct precipitation fluctuations for this region. To verify the new reconstructions, calibration with recorded rainfall using cross-validation, comparison with other reconstructions, and documentary evidence from historical sources were utilized. The precipitation reconstructions show that there have not been fluctuations in mean precipitation on time scales longer than 30 years, but there have been major fluctuations in precipitation variability including changes in the frequency of extremes and rare events that have not occurred in the modern record.

    Notes: Abstract An investigation of spatial pattern in relatively sparse Pinus ponderosa-P. Jeffreyi stands showed that a simple Poisson model of random distribution described the pattern at 5 to 50 m scales in the denser stands examined when allowance is made for inhibition between nearest neighbors. There is evidence for a clumped distribution in large quadrats for the sparsest stands, which concurs with prior work where a mixed Poisson model was fit to the data. The technique used was innovative in that it involved digitally recording tree locations from high resolution aerial photos, which allowed for the automatic application of several statistical techniques in order to determine how pattern varies with plot density and scale. Point locations were recorded for six 11.3 ha plots in three density regions of a 340 ha study area in northeastern California, USA. The inter-event distance distribution, and one- and two-dimensional power spectra were calculated, and variable quadrat analysis was performed for the data sets. The second order and spectral analyses showed no evidence of a distinctive clumped pattern at any scale, and all analyses showed that the pattern was regular at the scale of the average inter-plant distance in the denser stands. For the sparser stands, the counts in large quadrats did not fit a Poisson distribution, but were better fit by a mixed Poisson model describing aggregated pattern.

    Notes: Abstract Varves from many environments have been used as paleoclimatic indicators. Measurement of varve thicknesses has typically been done manually, but an automated procedure would provide more accurate measurements with considerable savings in time. An automated method described herein involves digitizing an x ray of the core with a high-resolution optical densitometer. The two-dimensional optical density field is filtered to enhance the varve signal, and the filtered series is then used to define a series of line segments representing varve boundaries. The distance between adjacent boundaries is then averaged across the core to obtain the mean thickness of each layer. A section of thin laminae from near the bottom of a long core from the Gulf of California (Deep Sea Drilling Project Hole 480) is analyzed to illustrate the technique.

    Description: The goal of this work is to examine the properties of recording mechanisms which are common to continuously recording high-resolution natural systems in which climatic signals are imprinted and preserved as proxy records. These systems produce seasonal structures as an indirect response to climatic variability over the annual cycle. We compare the proxy records from four different high-resolution systems: the Quelccaya ice cap of the Peruvian Andes;composite tree ring growth from southern California and the southwestern United States; and the marine varve sedimentation systems in the Santa Barbara basin (off California, United States) and in the Gulf of California, Mexico. An important focus of this work is to indicate how the interannual climatic signal is recorded in a variety of different natural systems with vastly different recording mechanisms and widely separated in space. These high-resolution records are the products of natural processes which should be comparable, to some degree, to human-engineered systems developed to transmit and record physical quantities. We therefore present a simple analogy of a data recording system as a heuristic model to provide some unifying concepts with which we may better understand the formation of the records. This analogy assumes special significance when we consider that natural proxy records are the principal means to extend our knowledge of climatic variability into the past, beyond the limits of instrumentally recorded data.

In order to do so it is necessary to approximate the complex nonlinear response function of the natural recording system using linear statistical models. Three problems with this approach were discussed, and possible solutions were suggested. Examples were given from a reconstruction of Santa Barbara precipitation based on tree-ring records from Santa Barbara County.
