    Notes: A purified polyclonal antiserum directed against the isolated main 80kD IROMP (iron-regulated outer-membrane protein) from Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 detected only the 80 kD polypeptide of outer-membrane proteins from PAO1 cells grown in iron deficiency in Western blots. It was also shown to inhibit the uptake of 59Fe pyoverdin by PAO1 cells as well as its binding to purified outer membranes. Immunofluorescence experiments with intact PAO1 cells confirmed that the receptor is present only at the surface of cells grown under conditions of iron deficiency. All these data allow us to conclude that the 80 kD main IROMP of P. aeruginosa is indeed the receptor for the siderophore ferripyoverdin.

    Notes: Abstract Several suggestions for structures of the siderophores (pyoverdins) from Pseudomonas spp. can be found in the literature which are based on a FAB mass spectrometric analysis only. Availability of two original strains of two Pseudomonas spp. allowed to re-investigate the structure of their pyoverdins. In both cases the amino acid sequence had to be corrected. In addition, d- and l-amino acids could be identified and located in the peptide chain. The knowledge of the correct structures is important in view of an ongoing study to establish relationships between the nature of the peptide chains of pyoverdins and their recognition by outer membrane proteins.

    Notes: Abstract Forty-four dental casting alloys and pure metals have been evaluated for corrosion resistance in an artificial saliva. The electrochemical tests included measurement of the rest potential and tracing of polarization curves. Qualitative comparisons of the normalized polarization curves, and quantitative determination of corrosion resistance, and of corrosion and breakdown potentials, provided complementary means of evaluation. Alloys were assigned two families: alloys for crowns and bridges (C&B alloys), and alloys for ceramic veneering (PFM alloys). Among these two families, groups were based on the gold-content (high and low), and on the main non-gold component: silver for C&B alloys, and palladium for PFM alloys. Pure metals and some non-noble alloys have been included as references. From this study, it clearly appears that the PFM alloys, having a higher content of noble metals, are more corrosion resistant than the C&B alloys containing copper and silver. Some relationships between noble-metal content and electrochemical parameters such as rest potential and corrosion resistance, have been identified, but the strength of the correlations is somewhat lowered by the influence of additional parameters, such as the presence of non-noble components or the nature of the microstructure. The present investigation is part of a larger study including other electrochemical parameters as well as various biocompatiblity tests on the same set of 44 alloys.

    Notes: Abstract Models of developmental continuity and change in quantitative phenotypes may be tested using longitudinal data from twins. We illustrate a procedure for establishing the power and required sample sizes for detecting developmental transmission against an alternative common-factor hypothesis. We explore the general effects of different heritabilities, different fidelities of environmental and genetic developmental transmission, and varying numbers of occasions of measurement. In addition, a constraint of wide application is postulated for the action of the environment; either environmental effects are transmitted (learned) and occasion specific or they exert a constant influence which is not transmitted (learned). While the situations we examine are necessarily restricted here, our explorations of power show that, providing that we measure on at least four occasions, it is easy to detect developmental transmission with workable sample sizes.

    Notes: Summary Ruthenium red staining and tannic acid fixation were used to analyse the fine structure of embryonic mouse dental basement membrane in intact first mandibular molars or in EDTA-isolated dental papillae. Preameloblasts are separated from extracellular matrix proper by a basal lamina that contains regularly arranged proteoglycan granules of about 10 nm in diameter. This distribution pattern is particularly evident in the inner and outer lamina rara of the basal lamina associated with EDTA-isolated dental papillae. The plasmalemma of preameloblasts demonstrates electron dense plaques on the inner leaflet. Ruthenium red positive granules (50 nm in diameter) coat non-striated and striated fibrils of the matrix. Hyaluronidase treatment digested the ruthenium red positive granules. Tannic acid fixation allowed the demonstration of filaments within the lamina rara interna, connecting the lamina densa with plasmalemma of preameloblasts. These observations are discussed in the context of the terminal differentiation of odontoblasts.

    Notes: Abstract. The development of dentin and of enamel share a common starting locus: the dentinoenamel junction (DEJ). In this study the relationship between enamel and dentin crystals has been investigated in order to highlight the guiding or modulating role of the previously mineralized dentin layer during enamel formation. Observations were made with a high-resolution electron microscope and, after digitalization, image-analysis software was used to obtain digital diffractograms of individual crystals. In general no direct epitaxial growth of enamel crystals onto dentin crystals could be demonstrated. The absence of direct contact between the two kinds of crystals and the presence of amorphous areas within enamel particles at the junction with dentin crystals were always noted. Only in a few cases was the relationship between enamel and dentin crystals observed, which suggested a preorganization of the enamel matrix influenced by the dentin surface structure. This could be explained either by the existence of a proteinaceous continuum between enamel and dentin or by the orientation of enamel proteins by dentin crystals.

    Notes: Abstract The “Virginia 30,000” comprise 29,698 subjects from the extended kinships of 5670 twin pairs. Over 80 unique correlations between relatives can be derived from these kinships, comprised of monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins and their spouses, parents, siblings, and children. This paper describes the first application of a fairly general model for family resemblance to data from the Virginia 30,000. The model assesses the contributions of additive and dominant genetic effects in the presence of vertical cultural inheritance, phenotypic assortative mating, shared twin and sibling environments, and within-family environment. The genetic and environmental effects can be dependent on sex. Assortment and cultural inheritance may be based either on the phenotype as measured or on a latent trait of which the measured phenotype is an unreliable index. The model was applied to church attendance data from this study. The results show that the contributions of genes, vertical cultural inheritance, and genotype-environment covariance are all important, but their contributions are significantly heterogeneous over sexes. Phenotypic assortative mating has a major impact on family resemblance in church attendance.
