Notes: Boundary-value problems in steady-state current flow were solved numerically in bispherical coordinates for a sphere of arbitrary conductivity in a half-space. Solutions for the potential on the surface of the half-space were examined for the cases where both current sources were on the surface, one source on the surface and the second between the surface and the sphere, and one source on the surface and the other in the sphere. Results show a great similarity with the layered case when the buried electrode is placed between the surface and the conducting region. Such a buried electrode configuration makes it possible to obtain an accurate measurement of the depth to the conductor in both cases. A model with the current electrode placed in a conductive sphere is compared with a three-layered model with the source in a conductive intermediate layer, and results indicate that the lateral extent of a finite anomalous zone can be estimated using these limiting curves. The validity of these theoretical calculations for buried spheres was confirmed experimentally by tests conducted on an analog model.

Notes: Boundary-value problems in steady-state current flow were solved numerically for one and two layers over a half-space. Solutions were obtained for layers of various resistivities where one of the current sources was placed below the surface and the second kept at some finite distance from the drill hole. When a fixed surface dipole receiving pair was used, it was found that as the buried source approached a conductive region, quite good determinations of the depth to the conductor could be made, hence reducing the possibility of extended drilling in “dry” holes resulting from poor surface data and/or interpretation. Numerous models were generated to find the optimum positioning of the two current electrodes for different field situations of this type. It was also found that by placing a current source in the conductive region, better resolution of the lateral extent of a possible ore zone could be obtained, due both to the more rapid convergence of the apparent resistivity to the resistivity of the conductor, and the fact that a smaller separation in the receiving dipole could be used. Numerous analog models were constructed to verify the digital results. Surface and down-hole resistivity field data are compared to show the strength of this technique in delineating structure.

Notes: Standard resistivity configurations lose resolution in regions where multiple geologic layering of high conductivity contrast occurs. To partially circumvent this problem an electrode configuration was used, which includes a current electrode at depth down a drill hole in a water field, to examine the possibility of delineating ground-water flow channels. Results show the value of this technique in enhancing the electrical anomaly and hence determining structure. It was found that the ground water in this area flows primarily in fracture traces in the dolomite. Moreover, it was determined from well log synthesis that these fracture traces increase the effective porosity in the flow region by approximately ten percent.

Notes: SUMMARY— The effects of energy level, sex and sire upon the fatty acid composition of porcine fackfat were studied in two separate experiments. In both experiments, the inner layer of backfat consistently contained more total saturated fatty acids, primarily accounted for by stearic acid, and contained less palmitoleic, oleic, and linoleic acids than the outer layer. None of the variables in either experiment significantly (P 〉.0.5) affected the differences between layers. In Experiment 1, energy levels below 80% of full feed significantly (P 〈 .01) decreased stearic acid content and increased linoleic acid content. In Experiment 2 the fatty acid composition of backfat from pigs fed 80% of full feed did not differ significantly (P 〉 .05) from full-fed pigs.Backfat from spayed gilts had significantly (P 〈 .01) less linoleic acid than that from boars or barrows, while boars had a significantly (P 〈 .01) higher content of linoleic acid than the other sexes. In Experiment 1, the backfat from barrows contained significantly (P 〈 .01) more stearic acid than that from gilts. The data from both experiments indicated that sire significantly (P 〈 .01) affected the linoleic acid content of the backfat, while the results of Experiment 2 also showed significant (P 〈 .01) sire effects upon the palmitic, palmitoleic, and stearic acid contents.

Notes: A resistivity survey was run in an area of good geologic control to determine if resistivity is a viable technique for delineating aquifers contaminated with acid mine drainage. Results show that due to the high conductivity of the acid water, it makes an excellent target to define electrically. Aquifers polluted in this fashion were traced from their surface expression back under clays, shales, and coal toward the point of origin. Based on these results along with chemical analysis of streams and ground-water samples, techniques are presented for the periodic monitoring of the ground water through surface resistivity techniques to determine both the extent and degree of contamination.

Notes: SUMMARY: DTA (differential thermal analysis) thermograms of epimysial connective tissue from normal and low quality porcine muscle were compared at 0 and 24 hr post-mortem. In addition, the melting characteristics of intramuscular collagen were determined at 0 hr post-mortem. In all tissues studied, collagen from low quality muscle consistently gave slightly lower peak melting points than that from normal muscle. Epimysial collagen had a significantly (P 〈 .05) lower peak melting point at 24 hr than at 0 hr post-mortem (64.24 vs. 65.77°C). Using epimysial collagen, a significantly (P 〈.01) greater proportion of the total melting range occurred at lower temperatures at 24 hr post-mortem as compared to 0 hr (4 1.1 vs. 30.9%). The thermal behavior of intramuscular collagen at 0 hr post-mortem was similar to that of epimysial collagen at 0 hr, but peak melting temperatures were slightly higher for intramuscular connective tissue.

Notes: The microbiology, weight loss (carcass shrink) and case-life of ham-burger and top loin steaks were studied on carcasses from fat and thin beef-type steers. One side of each carcass was chilled rapidly (0°C) and the other slowly (15°C) for 24 hr followed by storage at 2°C. One-half of the sides were sprayed with a sodium hypochlorite solution containing 200 mg/L chlorine. Slow-chilled sides and those from thin carcasses sustained the greatest weight loss. Case-life at 2°C of steaks and ham-burger was not affected by chilling rate or application of spray. Slow-chilling resulted in significantly higher aerobic plate counts and psychrotrophic bacterial counts than fast-chilling, and microbial counts were higher in samples taken from the inside of the carcass (jugular furrow) than from the outside of the round. Application of sodium hypochlorite spray resulted in slightly lower aerobic plate counts but the results were not significantly (P 〉 0.10) different from unsprayed samples.

Notes: Data from three experiments suggest that designs for studies using pork loin should consider variations within the loin from the 4th rib to the anterior end of the hip bone.' Of the factors measured on anterior, middle, and posterior sections in the loin, only tenderness and flavor of the LD were similar for all three sections in all three experiments. The middle section lost less weight during cooking, produced the most press fluid, and was the least tender in all experiments. The anterior section required significantly longer total cooking time than middle or posterior sections, whereas there was no factor in which the posterior section usually differed from the other two sections.
