Notes: Recent much theoretical interest has been shown in the magnetic ordering process of triangular antiferromagnets. Such a magnetic lattice type should exhibit strong frustration effects. The hexagonal ABX3 ternary halides and the AX2 metal halides are good candidates for studying the frustration effects on the triangular lattice. We discuss neutron scattering studies of the magnetic ordering process in the Ising-like antiferromagnets CsCoCl3, CsMnI3, and the XY-like antiferromagnets CsMnBr3, CsVCl3. The effects of magnetic as well as diamagnetic doping were studied for the systems CsMn1−xMgxBr3 and CsMn1−xFexBr3. Asymmetric line profiles were observed which corresponds to frustration behavior in the magnetic ordering of this type of compound. A release of frustration is observed for the modified triangular antiferromagnet.

Notes: We have carried out ultrasonic and neutron studies of a range of single-crystal Gd1−x Scx random alloys (x=0.25, 0.28, 0.295, 0.31, 0.32, 0.36) in the vicinity of the multicritical point at x=0.29. The sample richest in Gd shows magnetic behavior similar to the pure element while those richer in Sc display helimagnetism with lock-in effects at low temperature. The sample closest to the multicritical point (x=0.28) shows unusual magnetic behavior at low temperatures.

Notes: Summary. The influence of the nitrogen supply on the growth and development of quackgrass (Agropyron repens L. Beauv.) was investigated by growing plants in sand culture at nitrogen levels of 210, 10–5, 5.25 and 2.6 ppm in addition to constant levels of other basic nutrients. When these nutrient regimes were first applied the rate of leaf emergence showed a positive correlation with the nitrogen level. This effect, however, did not persist and the rate subsequently attained was similar at all levels of nutrition. Tiller emergence, on the other hand, was markedly dependent on the nitrogen supply and at 2.6 ppm N was almost completely suppressed. As a result of this effect the production of secondary rhizomes, i.e. those arising from tillers, was correspondingly reduced. There was, however, a slight increase in the number of rhizomes produced from buds on the parent shoot. At 2.6 ppm N the dry weight of the shoots was reduced by approximately 75% as compared with the highest nitrogen level but there was no significant reduction in the weight of the roots or rhizomes. The shoot/root ratio was thus considerably decreased at the lower ni trogen levels.By varying the nitrogen supply it was also possible to control quite precisely the behaviour of the rhizome buds. At 2.6 ppm and 10.5 ppm the buds ceased to grow when 2–6 mm in length, the size attained being determined by the nitrogen level. At 210 ppm, however, the onset of dormancy was eliminated and all of the buds grew out as lateral branches. Bud growth could also be induced at a low nitrogen level (5.25 ppm) by removing the rhizome apex. The significance of these results is discussed in relation to the ecology of the plant and to the problem of apical dominance.Influence de diverses dases d'azote sur la croissarce et le développent d'Agropyron repens L. Notes: Summary. The translocation of 14C-labelled herbieides in field bracken has been sludied in some preliminary experiments by means of autoradiography. A detailed account is given of the methods employed. It is shown that when 2,4-D is applied to fronds at different stages of development movement of the tracer into the rhizome is considerably greater from parts of the frond which are still immature. Trasnslocation within the frond is predominantly basipetal at all stages of development; within the rhizome the direction of movement appears to be determined primarily by the nature of the vascular connections with the treated pinna. In a comparison between the translocation of 2,4-D, 4-CPA and dalapon no difference was apparent after 24 hours, but when the treatment period was extended to 96 hours there was evidence that 4-CPA bad been translocated in a considerably greater amount than either of the other two herbicides. Notes: An investigation was conducted under controlled conditions to determine whether treatments designed to maximize the availability of water during seed development could induce viviparous germination in wild oats (Avena fatua L.). Panicles of three genetic lines, which differed in their degree of dormancy, were kept in darkness at ca 100% RH and 20±1°C and were either supplied with water through the cut end of the rachis or left attached to the plant which was exposed to light. In the non-dormant line, germination of both primary and secondary caryopses on excised panicles increased with their stage of development when treated, i.e., 0, 5 and 10 days after anthesis. Germination of primary caryopses varied between 70 and 80% and was similar on both isolated and attached panicles treated at 10 and 5 days after anthesis, respectively. The percentage germination was considerably lower in all treatments of the two dormant lines and was inversely related to the genetically determined difference in their degree of dormancy. In these dormant lines germination was significantly lower on the intact plant than on the detached panicles. Water potential measurements suggested that this difference may be due partly to the transpiration-induced negative ψxyin the stem which may contribute to the inhibition of embryo growth and thus to the prevention of viparous germination.
