    Notes: A stereoscopic microscope has been used in combination with the body of a 35 mm camera to obtain stereophotographs, at scales up to 6:1, of objects only a few millimetres in size. Subsequent stereocomparator observations have been used to deduce height differences on the objects 10 a precision, for the mean of five sets of readings, of ±0.01 mm for closely spaced points. Using more widely separated points, the precision was estimated to be ± 0.05 mm. Depths were computed using × parallaxes after a number of parameters were fixed by calibration. The large convergence angle of the microscope axes was a crucial parameter; rotations about the camera axis were found to be significant variables.

    Notes: Abstract The relationship between structure and mechanical properties for dental composites has often proved difficult to determine due to the use of commercially available materials having a number of differences in composition i.e. different type of resin, different type of filler, etc. This makes a scientific study of any one variable such as filler content difficult if not impossible. In the current study it was the aim to test the hypothesis that hardness measurements of dental composites could be used to monitor the status of the resin–filler interface and to determine the efficacy of any particle silanation process. Ten model composites formulated from a single batch of resin and containing a common type of glass filler were formulated to contain varying amounts of filler. Some materials contained silanated filler, others contained unsilanated filler. Specimens were prepared and stored in water and hardness (Vickers') was determined at 24 h using loads of 50, 100, 200 and 300 g. Composites containing silanated fillers were significantly harder than materials containing unsilanated fillers. For unsilanated products hardness was independent of applied load and in this respect they behaved like homogeneous materials. For composites containing silanated fillers there was a marked increase in measured hardness as applied load was increased. This suggests that the hardness–load profile could be used to monitor the status of the resin–filler interface. ©1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers

    Notes: Abstract Coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) has been determined for selected composite materials using differential thermal analysis. Variables evaluated were: type of material, with particular emphasis on filler content; annealing; thermal history, with particular attention being payed to the effects of multiple heating and cooling cycles; ageing in wet or dry conditions. Filler content was a major factor involved in controlling CTE, although clearly other factors such as the type of filler, resin and degree of conversion are important. For an inlay material, annealing at 120°C significantly reduced the value of coefficient of thermal expansion and this is most likely due to an increase in conversion of methacrylate groups. The findings of this study confirm those of previous studies regarding the reduction in CTE following an initial heating. This is most likely due to the relief of internal stress. New information reported here relates to the fact that stress release can occur slowly without heating and that rapid stress release can be achieved through water storage at mouth temperature. These results suggest that, clinically, internal stresses induced by polymerization will be dissipated rapidly. A further finding was that long-term water storage causes an increase in CTE, which may reflect changes at the resin-filler interface.

    Notes: Abstract A new method of producing and evaluating surface fatigue using a rolling-ball device has been developed. The method involves constraining a rolling ruby ball between the “v” groove of a rotor and the test specimen. The ball applies a compressive stress to the surface of the test material whilst it rolls in a circular pattern across the specimen surface. The fatigue life is defined as the time taken for surface degradation to begin to occur. The method is simple and reproducible and allows fatigue data to be gathered using a relatively small number of specimens. A series of model dental composites having varying filler fractions (23.7–66.4 vol%) were used to assess the potential of the method. The pattern of material loss as well as scanning electron microscopy examination of the damaged surfaces of test specimens confirmed that a fatigue mechanism was responsible for material loss. The fatigue life varied markedly with filler volume fraction being optimized at values in the range 30–50 vol%. Lower and higher volume fractions reduced the fatigue life. Filler silanation significantly improves fatigue life. The results suggest that the rolling ball device will prove useful in comparing the properties of different materials and in the development of improved products.

    Notes: Block copolymers of ethylene and butadiene have been prepared to study their properties. The method of preparation of polybutadiene, polyethylene, and block copolymers of ethylene and butadiene with n-butyl lithium-tetramethyl ethylene diamine complex is outlined. Kinetic studies have been reported elsewhere and these are assessed to determine that suitability of the system to produce monodispersed “living” chains so that simple correlations between physical properties and molecular weight can be made. The properties were somewhat restricted by the 1,2-microstructure of the butadiene block.
