    Description: Profiles of Mo/total organic carbon (TOC) through the Lower Toarcian black shales of the Cleveland Basin, Yorkshire, United Kingdom, and the Posidonia shale of Germany and Switzerland reveal water mass restriction during the interval from late tenuicostatum Zone times to early bifrons Zone times, times which include that of the putative Early Toarcian oceanic anoxic event. The degree of restriction is revealed by crossplots of Mo and TOC concentrations for the Cleveland Basin, which define two linear arrays with regression slopes (ppm/%) of 0.5 and 17. The slope of 0.5 applies to sediment from the upper semicelatum and exaratum Subzones. This value, which is one tenth of that for modern sediments from the Black Sea (Mo/TOC regression slope 4.5), reveals that water mass restriction during this interval was around 10 times more severe than in the modern Black Sea; the renewal frequency of the water mass was between 4 and 40 ka. The Mo/TOC regression slope of 17 applies to the overlying falciferum and commune subzones: the value shows that restriction in this interval was less severe and that the renewal frequency of the water mass was between 10 and 130 years. The more restricted of the two intervals has been termed the Early Toarcian oceanic anoxic event but is shown to be an event caused by basin restriction local to NW Europe. Crossplots of Re, Os, and Mo against TOC show similar trends of increasing element concentration with increase in TOC but with differing slopes. Together with modeling of 187Os/188Os and d98Mo, the element/TOC trends show that drawdown of Re, Os, and Mo was essentially complete during upper semicelatum and exaratum Subzone times (Mo/TOC regression slope of 0.5). Drawdown sensitized the restricted water mass to isotopic change forced by freshwater mixing so that continental inputs of Re, Os, and Mo, via a low-salinity surface layer, created isotopic excursions of up to 1.3 per mil in d98Mo and up to 0.6 per mil for 187Os/188Os. Restriction thereby compromises attempts to date Toarcian black shales, and possibly all black shales, using Re-Os chronology and introduces a confounding influence in the attempts to use d98Mo and initial 187Os/188Os for palaeo-oceanographic interpretation.

    Description: We present a revised 87Sr/86Sr-curve for marine-Sr in the interval 2.5-4.5 Ma using analysis of Orbulina universa from the Middle Pliocene type section in Sicily (Punta Piccola section) and a mixed assemblage of planktonic foraminifera from ODP Site 758A and B. The new calibration is used, together with new 87Sr/86Sr analysis of pectenid calcite from Cockburn Island, Antarctica, to confirm an age of 4.7 Ma for the pectenids of the Cockburn Island Formation (formerly the Pecten Conglomerate), a unit important in marking a period of warmth and possible glacial retreat in Antarctica. Finally, to aid interlaboratory comparison of 87Sr/86Sr data, we calibrate a value of 0.709174 for EN-1 against a value of NIST 987 of 0.709248.

    Notes: We have developed a high-resolution ac susceptometer that uses a rf superconducting quantum interference device to directly measure the flux coupled into a superconducting detection coil from a sample's changing magnetic moment in an applied ac field. The system operates in a frequency range from 0.01 to 1500 Hz and an applied ac field range of 0.1–400 μT with a sensitivity of about 5×10−12 A m2 for magnetic moment measurement, and at a reduced sensitivity down to 0.001 Hz. The instrument is based on an existing dc magnetometer system and uses that system's temperature control and dc superconducting magnet to allow operation over a temperature range from 2 to 400 K and in applied dc fields of ±5.0 T. During a measurement all operations are controlled automatically by computer from a menu-driven software system, with user input required only on initiation of a measurement sequence. Both real and imaginary components of the ac susceptibility can be determined.

    Notes: SUMMARY. 〈list xml:id="l1" style="custom"〉1 Within the past 10 years the introduced exotic bivalve, Corbicula fluminea, has spread from the Savannah River through a riverine swamp into a third-order blackwater tributary on the Savannah River Site (SRS). We examined the effects of this invasion on a native bivalve, Elliptio cornplanata, and on seston concentration in the stream.2 Corbicula fluminea has not yet colonized the entire stream and its distribution limit is coincident with the occurrence of gravel beds.3 Corbicula fluminea appears to cause localized reduction of seston concentration and may rapidly clear the sediment boundary layer of food. There was no evidence of a negative impact on the distribution of the native bivalve in spite of high measured rates of water clearance by C. fluminea.

    Notes: The deposits comprising ‘valley-side fans’ in a small intermontane basin of the Southern Alps are classified as debris flow, water-laid, intermediate and mixed deposits on the basis of particle size and clast orientation characteristics. Five varieties of debris flow deposit are identified including unimodal and bimodal ‘mudflow gravels’. The fans comprise mainly unimodal mudflow gravels which although apparently similar to the mudflow gravels described from montane and periglacial environments are coarser, have less silt and clay and are better sorted than the mudflow deposits described from semiarid alluvial fans. Additions of airborne silt and fine sand to the fan catchments during later stages of fan building gave rise to bimodal debris flow deposits which appear similar to gravels described from cold-climate fans in Tasmania and classed as water-laid deposits. Braided stream deposits were added to the depositional sequence towards the closing stages of fan building indicating that the fan had become ‘wetter’. In many places, however, the youngest Pleistocene fan deposits are silt-rich mixtons reflecting a peak in loess deposition.
