Notes: Combined low-cycle fatigue/high-cycle fatigue (LCF/HCF) loadings were investigated for smooth and circumferentially V-notched cylindrical Ti–6Al–4V fatigue specimens. Smooth specimens were first cycled under LCF loading conditions for a fraction of the previously established fatigue life. The HCF 107 cycle fatigue limit stress after LCF cycling was established using a step loading technique. Specimens with two notch sizes, both having elastic stress concentration factors of Kt = 2.7, were cycled under LCF loading conditions at a nominal stress ratio of R = 0.1. The subsequent 106 cycle HCF fatigue limit stress at both R = 0.1 and 0.8 was determined. The combined loading LCF/HCF fatigue limit stresses for all specimens were compared to the baseline HCF fatigue limit stresses. After LCF cycling and prior to HCF cycling, the notched specimens were heat tinted, and final fracture surfaces examined for cracks formed during the initial LCF loading. Fatigue test results indicate that the LCF loading, applied for 75% of total LCF life for the smooth specimens and 25% for the notched specimens, resulted in only small reductions in the subsequent HCF fatigue limit stress. Under certain loading conditions, plasticity-induced stress redistribution at the notch root during LCF cycling appears responsible for an observed increase in HCF fatigue limit stress, in terms of net section stress.

Notes: [Auszug] However, Kocsis and Welch3 found that tremorine was metabolized in vitro to a substance many times more potent than tremorine itself. Cho, Haslett and Jenden4 have isolated and identified this active metabolite of tremorine and found it to be l-(2-oxopyrrolidin-l-yl)-4-pyrrolidin-l'-yl-but-2-yne ...

Notes: A basic requirement of all photosynthetic organisms is a balance between overall energy supply through temperature-independent photochemical reactions and energy consumption through the temperature-dependent biochemical reactions of photosynthetic electron transport and contiguous metabolic pathways. Since the turnover of photosystem II (PSII) reaction centers is a limiting step in the conversion of light energy into ATP and NADPH, any energy imbalance may be sensed through modulation of the redox state of PSII. This can be estimated in vivo by chlorophyll a fluorescence as changes in the redox state of PSII, or photosystem II excitation pressure, which reflects changes in the redox poise of intersystem electron transport carriers. Through comparisons of photosynthetic adjustment, we show that growth at low temperature mimics growth at high light. We conclude that terrestrial plants, green algae and cyanobacteria do not respond to changes in growth temperature or growth irradiance per se, but rather, respond to changes in the redox state of intersystem electron transport as reflected by changes in PSII excitation pressure, We suggest that this chloroplastic redox sensing mechanism may be an important component for sensing abiotic stresses in general. Thus, in addition to its role in energy transduction, the chloroplast may also be considered a primary sensor of environmental change through a redox sensing/signalling mechanism that acts synergistically with other signal transduction pathways to elicit the appropriate molecular and physiological responses.

Notes: Summary The organization of the mitochondrial genomes from two morphologically similar Phytophthora isolates, P. megasperma f. sp. glycinea (Pmg) and P. megasperma f. sp. medicaginis (Pmm), and the morphologically different species, P. parasitica var. nicotianae (Ppn), has been studied. The mtDNAs are circular, and their estimated sizes are 45.3 kb, 41 kb, and 39.5 kb for Pmg, Pmm, and Ppn, respectively. Physical maps were constructed for restriction endonuclease sites. Four genes (l-rRNA, s-rRNA, oxi-2, and cob) were found to have the same order in the three mtDNAs.

In particular, 2-0-propoxyphenyl-8-azapurin-6-one, M & B 22,948 (1), is from 20 to 50 times more potent than ...
