Notes: This paper presents data on the distribution of seven pesticides in an agricultural catchment which is located within the Agricultural Development and Advisory Service farm at Rosemaund, 11 km north-east of Hereford, UK. Data for aldicarb, atrazine, carbofuran, dimethoate, MCPA and isoproturon, are available for both the soil and surface waters (drain and stream water), with simazine data available only for the stream. Measurements were taken before and after pesticide application, which was made following normal agricultural practice. Soil residue data showed the degradation rates of the pesticides to be within the range of literature values. Pesticide levels in the stream and drains during runoff events following rainfall ranged from below detection limits (typically 0.02-0.1 μg/1), to 264 μg/1 (for carbofuran). Over 90% of the events had detectable maximum concentrations. The percentage of pesticide applied, which was removed during individual rainfall events, was calculated. The maximum value estimated was 1.1%, again for carbofuran. Most of the events gave values several orders of magnitude below this value. The data have been used to try to validate a range of models which could be used for screening new pesticides or for informing decisions on the use of existing pesticides. The results of the validations are summarized.

Notes: The rate of oxygen consumption by sticklebacks has been studied by long-term continuous-flow respirometry. Exposure to 1 p.p.m. zinc in calcium-free water causes wide variations in individual responses, but oxygen uptake tends to rise and then become extremely erratic, before declining as death approaches. Behavioural abnormalities such as increased ventilation rate, loss of balance, and long periods of inactivity alternating with spasmodic swimming also occur. Exposure to 6.5 p.p.m. zinc in high-calcium water generally causes a rise in oxygen consumption, followed by fluctuations in the rate of uptake, but no behavioural abnormalities occur and deaths are rare even after exposure for 400 h. If restored to zinc-free water after 40 h exposure to zinc, recovery is generally complete, although fluctuating rates of oxygen uptake persist. These results are discussed in relation to previous work on the effects of heavy metals on fish respiration.

Notes: Concentrations of 0.5–1.0 mg Zn2+/dm3 distilled water killed sticklebacks after 1–3 days, producing detachment and sloughing of epithelial cells, and coalescing of adjacent secondary lamellar epithelia. Cytoplasmic abnormalities included extensive vacuolation, followed by swelling of nuclei and mitochondria leading to cellular disintegration. Many acutely poisoned fish recovered in zinc-free hard water, regeneration of epithelia being accompanied by a temporary appearance of chloride cells on the secondary lamellae. Concentrations of 2.0–6.0 mg Zn2+/dm3 hard water were not toxic over periods of up to 700 h. Extensive cytoplasmic abnormalities appeared, however, including the formation of membrane-bounded vesicles and dense accumulations of metabolites. The most pronounced effect was the appearance of active chloride cells on the secondary lamellae. The possible involvement of chroride cells in the excretion of ions other than chloride is briefly discussed.

Notes: Endosulfan, an insecticide highly toxic to fish, is currently applied from the air for tsetse fly control in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. Although dosages are very ow (6–12 g a.i. ha−1), they cause some fish mortality and affects the behaviour of survivors. In order to determine how quickly fish recover from sublethal poisoning, four haematological characteristics (erythrocyte count, leucocyte count, haemoglobin concentration and plasma protein concentration) were monitored in several species during and after six sequential applications of endosulfan (July–October 1978). In all cases, blood cel counts were significantly elevated during spraying (by up to a factor of four), while plasma protein levels were often disturbed. Total haemogobin (Hb) did not change, but the mean weight of Hb per erythrocyte declined significantly in Tilapia spp. from 59 to 39 pg. Im most instances these quantities began returning to normal before spraying ceased and reached prespray levels within six months.

Notes: Sarotherodon mossambicus was exposed for up to 10 weeks to concentrations of Abate larvicide in excess of those produced during blackfly control in African rivers. Despite this treatment, several indicators of sub-lethal poisoning, e.g. growth, plasma glucose, acetyl-cholinesterase activity remained almost unchanged. A possible explanation for the low toxicity of Abate is given.
