Description: In the Venus atmosphere, fast zonal wind has been observed, which is called super-rotation, because it is much faster than the rotation period of the solid part of the planet. So far, Venus general circulation models (VGCMs) have been used to study the super-rotation and several studies obtained fully developed super-rotation faster than 100 m/s. It has been suggested that horizontal diffusion and resolution are important factors to generate and maintain the super-rotation in the general circulation model because waves which transport angular momentum are sensitive to them. Here, we investigated how the super-rotation depends on the magnitude of horizontal hyper diffusion using a VGCM (AFES-Venus) with medium and high resolutions (T42L60 and T159L120 where T and L denote the triangular truncation number for spherical harmonics and vertical levels, respectively). In both the runs, we found a parameter range where the structure of fully developed super-rotation is almost independent of the magnitude of horizontal diffusion. Spectral analysis shows that unrealistically strong super-rotation is developed when medium-scale disturbances are dissipated by stronger horizontal diffusion. On the other hand, artificially weak super-rotation is also realized because spurious small-scale disturbances are accumulated when the horizontal diffusion is too weak. We elucidated that the super-rotation reproduced in our VGCM is caused by resolved eddies. Moreover, we could estimate appropriate magnitude of horizontal diffusion by the spectral analysis. This study has broad implications for the planetary atmospheric science, not only in modeling but also in observational aspects.

Notes: In order to fabricate intrinsic pn junctions in p-type ZnTe substrates for realizing pure-green light-emitting diodes, Al was used as the diffusion species. We found that the Al diffusion region is observed as a dark region image by scanning electron microscopy. Al was diffused over a wide range of annealing temperatures and times. It was found that the activation energies of Al diffusion into p-type ZnTe substrates were 1.9±0.1 eV and the diffusion coefficient was given by D=20 exp(−1.9/kT) cm2/s. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An optical system equipped with a diamond anvil cell is constructed for studying the optical properties of materials under the simultaneous conditions of high magnetic field, high pressure, and low temperature. As an application of this apparatus, the magnetophotoluminescence due to the exciton state in Cd0.9Mn0.1Se is measured at 4.2 K under 1.25 GPa in the presence of magnetic fields up to 23 T.

Notes: Effects of Ti addition to a Cr underlayer on the magnetic and crystallographic properties of Co–Cr–Pt media were investigated. C/Co–Cr20–Pt (Pt: 8 and 12 at. %)/Cr–Ti (Ti: 0–30 at. %) films were deposited on textured Ni–P/Al–Mg substrates by dc magnetron sputtering. In-plane Hc and S* increased as Ti was added to the Cr underlayer. The media noise at 167 kFCI decreased with an increase of the Ti content from 0 to 20 at. %. The normalized media noise of Co72Cr20Pt8/Cr75Ti25 media was 20% lower than that of Co68Cr20Pt12/Cr90Ti10 media where their coercivity and S* were almost the same. Further increase of the Ti caused the increase of the media noise. Transmission electron microscopy studies showed that average grain size of Cr–Ti films decreased from 30 to 20 nm with the increase of the Ti content from 0 to 20 at. %. The activation volume of Co68Cr20Pt12 films measured from the time dependences of remanence coercivity decreased by 30% as the Ti content increased from 0 to 20 at. %. The reduction of media noise is probably due to the decrease of the magnetic switching volume which is caused by the reduction of the grain size of Cr–Ti underlayers. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The magnetic properties of CoCrPt/CoCrPtSi dual-magnetic-layered thin films are investigated in terms of the crystalline microstructures using a vibrating-sample magnometer, transmission electron microscope, and scanning electron microscope. The magnetic crystal grains of the films are aligned with forming chainlike clusters. Each stacked magnetic crystal grain is epitaxially grown on individually isolated columnar Cr crystals with a relationship of hcp (101¯1)Co-based alloy //bcc (110)Cr. The direction of magnetic easy axes of two stacked magnetic crystals are aligned in a same direction. Single-crystalline dual-magnetic-layered thin films, which are epitaxially grown on MgO(110) single-crystal substrates, are prepared to estimate the Ku of the dual-layered magnetic grains. The Ku is determined to be 4×106 erg/cm3, whose value is about 2 times as large as that of single-layered CoCrPtSi. This large anisotropy energy is presumed to lead the increase of Hc in the dual-layered magnetic films.

Notes: Superconducting Nd-Ce-Cu-O thin films were epitaxially grown on SrTiO3 (100) by activated reactive evaporation. As-grown films showed the metallic temperature dependence of the resistivity and superconducting transition at 12.5 K (R=0). The remarkable parallel shift of the onset temperature of the resistive transition in the magnetic fields was observed. Ginzburg–Landau coherence lengths along the c axis and in the basal plane are 7 and 96 A(ring), respectively.

Notes: A low-pressure plasma spraying technique for depositing high Tc Y-Ba-Cu-O thick films has been developed. Films with a thickness range of 20–100 μm have been prepared by using Y0.3Ba0.7CuOx powders. After post-annealing in oxygen for 1 h at 950 °C, the films, which were deposited on a nimonic alloy substrate heated at 650 °C during spraying, exhibited a zero resistance temperature of 90.6 K with a transition width (90%–10%) of 2 K and a critical current density (77 K, 0 T) of 690 A/cm2.

Notes: A large volume negative ion source, which has a newly devised magnetic filter called a PG filter, was designed and tested. The PG filter produces a uniform magnetic filter field over a large extraction area of 14×36 cm2 by flowing a high current through the plasma grid itself. By optimizing the filter strength, we succeeded to produce 3.4-A 75-keV negative hydrogen ion beams for 50 ms from 253 apertures of 11.3 mm diam with an average current H− density of 13 mA/cm2.

Notes: A relativistic Fokker–Planck code is used to study the formation of non-Maxwellian electron velocity distributions in the end cell of a tandem mirror from the combined effects of Coulomb collisions and electron cyclotron radio-frequency (rf) heating. Axial electrostatic potential profiles consistent with thermal-barrier operation are assumed which lead to reasonable electron density profiles. The presence of the potentials results in four populations of electrons occupying different regions of phase space, three of which are solved for self-consistently; the fourth is the passing electron distribution from the center cell that is fixed as a Maxwellian. It is found that the second-harmonic barrier rf near the bottom of the magnetic well, together with rf cavity fields, give a good correspondence to the behavior of the hot electrons in the TMX-U experiment [IEEE Trans. Plasma Sci. PS-16, 1 (1988)]. The behavior of the fundamental rf in the plug region part way up the magnetic well shows poor correlation with experimental results.
