Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Polymerzations of acetaldehy de have been performed using such catalysts as the alkaline earth metal amalgams (i.e magnesium, calcium, strontium, and barium amalgam, respectiely), and amalgams of copper, zinc, aluminum, thallium, tin, lead, tantalum, mlanganese, and that of the tin/lead alloy. All alkaline earth metal amalgams were found to be very dffectinve in the pollymerization. Among these, that of strontium gave both the best yield and the highest molecular weight of the polymer. Especially, in the bulk polymerization, that of strontium was found to be even better than alkali metal amalgams1,2 and evaporated sodium3. The other metallic amalgams, however, had no activity for this polymerization. The results obtained by kinetic analaysis on this polymerization show a linear relationship between the activity, f, and the ionic charge per unit surface area.
