Notes: The effects were studied of a 24 h exposure to a subacute concentration of parathion (0.33 p.p.m., which is approximately equivalent to 0.5 of the 48-h LC50) on the locomotor orientation of mature goldfish Carassius auratus L., 26–30 cm long, in response to a food odour and a water flow differential, singly and in combination, in a free choice situation. Prior to exposure, food odour alone was significantly attractive but the combination ‘food odour with increased water flow’, as compared with the control situation, was avoided. Factorial analysis demonstrated interaction between odour and increased flow. After exposure to parathion the food odour ceased to be attractive and was significantly avoided. This avoidance was not present in the ‘food odour-increased flow’ combination. The parathion exposure did not affect the response to the flow conditions per se but reversed the interaction between food odour and increased flow. In addition, the exposure to the pesticide itself, in a second order interaction, interacted with ‘food odour-flow’ response. Hence, the short term exposure to the subacute organophosphate concentration affected not only the perception of food odour and flow individually, but also the interaction between these common environmental stimuli.

Notes: Abstract This paper discusses the solution of a generaln-compartment system with time dependent transition probabilities utilizing the technique described by Cardenas and Matis (1975) (hereafter abbreviated (CM)). In addition, the cumulant generating function is derived for a special class of reversiblen-compartment systems where the time-dependent intensity coefficients corresponding to the migration and death rates are some multiple of each other. The immigration rates can be any integrable function of time. The moments are also obtained and the solution to the two-compartment system is presented explicitly. The solution is illustrated with a linear and a periodic function which forms have been widely reported in the literature.

Notes: Abstract Environmental safety testing typically requires procedures for extrapolating from the relatively high experimental to the very low use doses of potentially harmful substances. In the present paper, a stochastic mammillary compartmental model for environmental safety testing is proposed and extrapolation procedures based on its dose-response relationship are developed. The proposed model is a direct generalization of one of the basic safety models, the one-hit model, in that a harmful reaction is assumed to occur if at any time any of the peripheral compartments attains a specified threshold of particles. Consideration of a closed model yields an upper bound on the probability of attaining a certain threshold level, thus providing a conservative procedure for extrapolating to a low dose, while a lower bound obtained from a related open model provides a useful monitoring device as to the sharpness of the upper, bound. The extrapolation procedure is illustrated with simulated data and approximations for initial values are developed.

Notes: Abstract In this paper a stochastic model for a two-compartment system which incorporates Erlang residence time distributions (i.e. the residence times have the gamma distribution where the shape parameters assume integer values only) into each compartment is generalized to include random rate coefficients. Analytical forms of the model are derived for the case where the rate coefficients have gamma densities. A relationship is established between the new models and existing models that are in current practical usage.

Notes: Abstract The cumulant generating function and first two moments are derived for the stochastic distribution of units in a general irreversiblen-compartment model with time-dependent transition probabilities. In this model, a unit in the first compartment can transfer to any one of the remainingn−1 compartments and a unit in the second compartment can transfer to any of the remainingn−2 compartments and so on. In addition, a unit can enter or leave the system through any compartment. The work is related to previous research and a numerical example is given.

Notes: Abstract The bivariate distribution of a two-compartment stochastic system with irreversible, time-dependent transition probabilities is obtained for any point in time. The mean and variance of the number of particles in any compartment and the covariance between the number of particles in each of the two compartments are exhibited and compared to existing results. The two-compartment system is then generalized to ann-compartment catenary and to ann-compartment mammillary system. The multivariate distributions of these two systems are obtained under two sets of initial conditions: (1) the initial distribution is known; and (2) the number of particles in each compartment of the system at timet=0 is determined. The moments of these distributions are also produced and compared with existing results.

Notes: Abstract The multivariate distribution over time of a particular stochastic mammillary compartmental model is obtained for any point in time. The maximum expectation of the peripheral compartments is then derived and used to determine lower bounds on the probability that the maximum of the peripheral compartments reaches any arbitrary threshold level. A bound on the probability is illustrated by an example and some of its implications are explored.

Notes: Abstract The distribution of the two-compartment, reversible system with time-dependent transitions is proposed and verified. Inasmuch as the required probabilities cannot, in general, be expressed in closed form, a method of approximating these probabilities is described. An example with specific inverse functions of time is presented.
