Notes: Crystals of different barium ferrite phases (M, K, and R phases) were grown by slow cooling and the top seeded solution growth technique, using the (0.4Na2O–0.6B2O3)–BaO–(4.5Fe2O3+1.5CoSnO3) system. It has been demonstrated that different ferrite phases, e.g., the K and R phases, may coexist in the same crystal with an interface that is free from observable misfit dislocations and amorphous zones. The magnetization of these two phases, measured with an applied magnetic field parallel to the crystallographic c axis, had a paramagnetic behavior. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In the present study, image processing techniques are applied to the chronophotographic visualizations of a cylinder wake generation. The flow patterns obtained by means of tracer particles are digitalized and processed in order to characterize the flow. This characterization is carried out by determining the evolution of the geometric parameters governing the wake, together with the streamfunction, vorticity, and pressure distributions. The present study reaches the moment of shedding of the first pair of vortices.

Notes: The crystal structure of monoclinic KGd(WO4)2 (KGW) has been refined at room temperature by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The unit-cell parameters are a = 10.652 (4), b = 10.374 (6), c = 7.582 (2) Å, β = 130.80 (2)°, with Z = 4, in space group C2/c. The linear thermal expansion tensor has been determined and the principal axes are [302], [010] and [106]. The principal axis with maximum thermal expansion (\boldalpha'_{33} = 23.44 × 10−6 K−1), {\bf X}'_{3}, was located 12° from the c axis. Undoped crystals of KGW and crystals that were partially doped by Pr, Nd, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb were grown by the top-seeding-solution growth slow-cooling method. The effect of doping on the KGW structure was observed in the cell parameters and in morphological changes. The changes in parameters follow the changes in lanthanide ionic radii. The doped crystals show {021} and {\bar{2}21} faces in addition to the {110}, {\bar{1}11}, {010}, {130} and {310} faces which basically follow the habit of the undoped KGW crystals. The development of the faces is related to the number of the most important periodic bond chains parallel to them.

Notes: Abstract The characteristics of air pollution in Tarragona (Spain) were investigated. Tarragona has an important petrochemical industry in a coastal region with a complex terrain. The numerical study was made in sea breeze conditions with a three-dimensional mesoscale model. Temporal and spatial variations of the wind fields have been used in the Eulerian equation for a non-reactive pollutant. The results of this study reveal the complexity of the dispersion patterns due to the combined effects of the sea breeze circulation and the orography. This work presents a comparison between the model output and the observed wind data by sodar and surface wind measurements. The evaluation shows that the model is capable of providing very realistic wind fields within this domain.

Notes: Abstract A three-dimensional meteorological model and a Lagrangian particle dispersion model are used to study the effects of a uniform large-scale wind on the dispersion of a non-reactive pollutant in a coastal region with complex terrain. Simulations are carried out both with and without a background wind. A comparison between model results and measured data (wind and pollutant concentrations) indicates that the coupled model system provides a useful mechanism for analyzing pollutant dispersion in coastal regions.

Notes: Abstract A cloud-detection method was used to retrieve cloudy pixels from Meteosat images. High spatial resolution (one pixel), monthly averaged cloud-cover distribution was obtained for a 1-year period. The seasonal cycle of cloud amount was analyzed. Cloud parameters obtained include the total cloud amount and the percentage of occurrence of clouds at three altitudes. Hourly variations of cloud cover are also analyzed. Cloud properties determined are coherent with those obtained in previous studies.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, axisymmetric bulk flow patterns generated by moderate disk rotation and counter-rotation inside a coaxial disk-cylinder configuration with a fixed aspect ratio are obtained both experimentally and numerically. Experimental results are based on chronophotographic visualization and image processing techniques, while numerical results are computed using the full stationary Navier-Stokes equations assuming two different dynamic boundary conditions (no-slip and meridional free-slip) for all rigid walls. A comparative analysis between both numerical distributing and the patterns obtained experimentally is carried out in terms of streamfunction and vorticity meridional distributions.

Notes: Summary To shed some light on the potential value of rifampicin in the treatment of tuberculous meningitis (TBM) in adults, a retrospective analysis has been made of 143 medical records from 4 hospitals for the period 1967–80. Treatment of TBM with rifampicin and other antituberculous drugs in combination (Group B) was compared to other regimes which did not include rifampicin (Group A). There were 64 patients in Group B and 79 in Group A. The two groups of patients did not differ significantly in their prognostic characteristics. The total mortality was 14.7%: it was higher among patients not treated with rifampicin (24%; Group A) than amongst those given rifampicin (3.1%; Group B; x 2=10.74; p〈0.005). The difference was also statistically significant (x 2=6.88; p〈0.01) if patients who died during the first 48 h after the institution of treatment were excluded. No significant difference in mortality rate was found when patients treated with rifampicin plus isoniazid (INH) 8–10 mg/kg (1 death out of 41 patients) were compared to patients treated with INH 15 mg/kg (2 deaths out of 20 patients). Neurological sequelae recorded during a 6 month follow-up period were more severe among patients not treated with rifampicin.
