    Notes: Giant magnetoresistance (GMR) in granular CuFeNi alloys is comparable in magnitude to that observed in CuCo. Here we study magnetization M and GMR (0〈H〈70 kOe; 4.2 K〈T〈300 K) in metal-spun and annealed Cu80Fe20−xNix (x=0, 2.5, 5, 10, and 15) as a function of annealing temperature Tan〈500 °C, using a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. A wide variety of granular structures characterized by different average values of the particle sizes is obtained for different Fe/Ni ratios and annealing conditions. For Cu80Fe10Ni10, neither M nor GMR exhibit static hysteresis for T〉50 K. At this temperature, the largest GMR value (19%) was obtained for a sample annealed at 400 °C for 2 h. In Cu80Fe5Ni15, on the other hand, the microstructure and magnetic properties of the alloy are much more sensitive to annealing. The magnetoresistence is strongly dependent upon both the annealing and the measuring temperatures. For Fe-rich Cu80Fe20−xNix, the magnetic properties other alloys show a weak dependence upon annealing temperature. Magnetization curves for both as-cast and annealed alloys indicate many large particles which saturate at low magnetic fields.     Notes: Magnetization and magnetoresistance (MR) were studied (0〈H〈70 kOe, 4.2 K〈T〈300 K) in as-cast and annealed (Tan=400, 450, and 500 °C) samples of melt-spun Cu80Fe5Ni15. Field-cooled magnetization curves, when compared with the Curie–Weiss law, suggest the presence of antiferromagnetic interactions (aitch-theta=−57 K) between nanoparticles for Tan=450 and 500 °C. Antiferromagnetic interactions have been predicted when dipolar interactions dominate Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida interactions in large particles. Here antiferromagnetic interactions are attributed to particles roughly 4 to 5 nm in size. The largest MR value (MR∼17% at H=70 kOe and T=10 K) is found for the as-cast material. For samples annealed at 400 °C, MR curves are linear in H above 10 kOe and are in qualitative agreement with a model which considers short-range magnetic scattering by particles of different sizes. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: By longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy we analyzed the development of the domain structure in Co70.4Fe4.6Si15B10 amorphous ribbons for which giant magneto-impedance had been observed. Using transverse and longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr effect magnetometry we measured the magnetization direction around the hysteresis loop. These results allowed us to model the domain structure of the sample during the giant magneto-impedance measurements. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Giant magnetoresistance (MR) was studied in alloys of composition Cu80Fe10Ni10, Cu80Fe15Ni5, Cu80Fe5Ni15, and Cu80Fe20, produced by melt spinning and annealed in the temperature range 300–600 °C. Materials were characterized by Mössbauer spectroscopy at several temperatures. At both 78 and 300 K, spectra for all CuFeNi compositions showed a singlet associated with superparamagnetic Fe nanoparticles, but at 4.2 K the sextet characteristic of ferromagnetic Fe was visible. From the hyperfine field reduction we estimated the radius of the Fe particles. Magnetization data for Cu80Fe10Ni10 at 300 K were compared with a model which features a log-normal distribution of noninteracting superparamagnetic particles. Thus the mean magnetic moment and the particle density were determined. The magnetoresistance ratio MR was compared to a model which considers bulk and interface scattering. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: ac magnetoresistance (MR) measurements performed in thin ribbons of the amorphous soft ferromagnet Co70.4Fe4.6Si15B10 are reported with a longitudinal dc applied magnetic field H varying from 0 to ±15 Oe. The dependence of the MR with the frequency f of the measuring ac current was investigated for 0.4≤f≤100 kHz. No significant frequency dependence in the resistivity ρ for H=0 and H=±15 Oe was found. For intermediate values of H, ρ(H) presents a peak in H which increases linearly in frequency. The MR peak in H at room temperature varies from typical values of 0.13% in the low-frequency range to a giant value of 27% at 100 kHz. Two possible sources for the frequency dependence of the magnetoresistance in amorphous alloys are discussed.

    Notes: Carcasses from cull range cows 3–10 years of age were utilized in two separate trials to: (1) establish the influence of animal age on the quantity, composition and tenderness of eight muscles, and (2) to determine the effects of realimentation on the tenderness and overall desirability of four selected muscles. Neither animal age or side of carcass influenced (P 〈 0.05) muscle weight, marbling score or percent intramuscular fat for the Triceps brachii (TB), Supraspinatus (SP), Semimembranosus (SM), Semitendinosus (ST), Biceps femoris (BF), Longissimus (LD), Psoas major (PM) and Gluteus me-dius (GM). The LD was the only muscle observed to demonstrate a decrease (P 〈 0.05) in Warner-Bratzler (WB) shear tenderness for cows between 3 and 10 years of age. Over all age groups, the BF was the least tender (P 〈 0.05) muscle, while the GM, LD, PM and TB were most tender (P 〈 0.05) but not different (P gt; 0.05) from one another according to the WB shear. A 16-member sensory panel revealed that beef from realimented cows was not consistently more acceptable than beef from nonfed animals. Muscles from nonfed cows were, in most cases, judged to be acceptable. In two of four muscles studied. for realimented animals by the sensory panel, fed animals were more tender (P 〈 0.05) than nonfed animals. The tenderness of the SM muscle from realimented beef was greater (P 〈 0.05) when cooked at 135°C vs 107°C or 163°C.

    Notes: The importance of genetic evaluations in aquaculture programmes has been increased significantly not only to improve effectiveness of hatchery production but also to maintain genetic diversity. In the present study, wild and captive populations of a commercially important neotropical freshwater fish, Brycon cephalus (Amazonian matrinchã), were analyzed in order to evaluate the levels of genetic diversity in a breeding programme at a Brazilian research institute of tropical fish. Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA fingerprinting was used to access the genetic variability of a wild stock from the Amazon River and of three captive stocks that correspond to consecutive generations from the fishery culture. Although farmed stocks showed considerably lower genetic variation than the wild population, a significantly higher level of polymorphism was detected in the third hatchery generation. The results seem to reflect a common breeding practice on several hatchery fish programmes that use a small number of parents as broodstocks, obtaining reproductive success with few non-identified mating couples. The obtained data were useful for discussing suitable strategies for the genetic management and biodiversity conservation of this species.
