Notes: This study evaluated whether the African cyprinid Barbus neumayeri from Rwembaita Swamp (low-oxygen) and Njuguta River (high-oxygen) in the Kibale National Park, Uganda differed in traits related to aerobic and anaerobic metabolic potential. Haematocrit was measured as an index of blood oxygen-carrying capacity, and tissue activities and isozyme composition of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were measured as indices of tissue anaerobic capacity. To address whether site-dependent differences were acute responses v. longer-term adjustments to environmental conditions, these variables were measured in fish sampled shortly after collection and after laboratory maintenance under well-aerated conditions. In fish sampled in the field, those from the low-oxygen site had significantly higher haematocrit, but this difference disappeared after long-term laboratory maintenance. In contrast, fish from the low-oxygen site had higher liver LDH activities than fish from the high-oxygen site, and this difference persisted during laboratory maintenance. Polymorphism was detected at both the LDH-A and LDH-B loci, and genotype frequencies for LDH-B differed significantly between collection sites. These results demonstrate physiological, biochemical and genetic differences in B. neumayeri from habitats differing in dissolved oxygen availability and suggest both acute and long-term responses to local environmental conditions.

Notes: Abstract This study describes the germination responses of ten tropical dune species to several factors to which their seeds are exposed in the field. Species studied were: three sand dune endemics (Amaranthus greggii, Palafoxia lindenii, and Trachypogon gouini), three pantropical coastal species (Sesuvium portulacastrum, Sporobolus virginicus and Ipomoea stolonifera) and four cosmopolitan grasses also found inland (Panicum repens, Panicum maximum, Pappophorum vaginatum and Andropogon glomeratus). Six species germinated when exposed to different constant temperatures. Four required temperature fluctuation (S. portulacastrum, P. lindenii, S. virginicus, P. repens). Light promoted germination of three species (S. Portulacastrum, P. vaginatum, P. lindenii). Species varied in their degree of sensitivity to salinity. Seeds of T. gouini, I. stolonifera, S. portulacastrum, P. repens, P. Maximum and P. vaginatum were able to germinate under some of the salinity concentrations. Not all species were able to recover after being transferred to distilled water. Seedling emergence was inhibited when seeds were buried. This response was related to depth and to seed size. S. portulacastrum and S. virginicus were the most affected. Nitrates only affected germination response of two species. Seed age promoted germination under a wider range of conditions. P. lindenii showed very heterogeneous responses depending on seed cohort. No dormancy mechanisms were found, other than a thermoperiod and/or light requirement for some of the species. Cosmopolitan grasses tolerated both sand burial and salinity, although the endemics were the most successful in emerging from sand burial; coastal pantropicals were very tolerant to high saline concentrations and recovered completely.

Notes: Abstract Allyldimethyldodecylammonium bromide was polymerized by γ-ray irradiation in both hexagonal and cubic mesophases, and the conversion–time curves were obtained. The maximum conversion was about 35%, and the polymer remained in the liquid-crystalline structure formed by the nonpolymerized monomers. The influence of polymerization on the distribution of water in the different types related to the hydrophilic surfaces of microstructures was studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The incomplete polymerization was explained by steric constraints in the liquid-crystalline structures.

Notes: An important area of research in computational biochemistry is the design of molecules for specific applications. The design of these molecules, which depends on the accurate determination of their three-dimensional structure, can be formulated as a global optimization problem. In this article, we present results from the application of a new conformation searching method based on direct search methods. We compare these results to some earlier results using genetic algorithms and simulated annealing. © 1994 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Description / Table of Contents: Das System CoSeO4-NiSeO4—H2O bei 30°C.
Notes: A study of the system CoSeO4—NiSeO4—H2O at 30°C has been carried out. Crystals were obtained by slow evaporation from a water solution. The identified phases were CoSeO4 · 5 H2O and NiSeO4 · 6 H2O, but CoSeO4 · 6 H2O is identified when the crystallization of Co compound is carried out in presence of Ni. The three phases show a limited replacement of metal according to X-ray powder results. The crystal structure of CoSeO4 · 5 H2O has been solved, the come pound is triclinic, a = 6.435(1), b = 10.703(2), c = 6.220(1) Å, α = 98.71(1), β = 109.60(2), γ = 75.54(1)°, P1, Z = 2. Refinement was terminated at R = 0.035 for all observed reflections. The crystal structure is isostructural to CuSO4 · 5 H2O and consists of Co(H2O)4 ions chains parallel to [110] μ-linked by the SeO4. The fifth water molecule acts as buffer.

Description: The collision of molecules at ultracold temperatures is of great importance to understand the chemical interactions at the quantum regime. Although much theoretical work has been devoted to this, experimental data are only sparsely available, mainly because of the difficulty in producing ground-state molecules at ultracold temperatures. We report here the creation of optically trapped samples of ground-state bosonic sodium-rubidium molecules with precisely controlled internal states and, enabled by this, a detailed study on the inelastic loss with and without the NaRb + NaRb -〉 Na 2 + Rb 2 chemical reaction. Contrary to intuitive expectations, we observed very similar loss and heating, regardless of the chemical reactivities. In addition, as evidenced by the reducing loss rate constants with increasing temperatures, we found that these collisions are already outside the Wigner region although the sample temperatures are sub-microkelvin. Our measurement agrees semiquantitatively with models based on long-range interactions but calls for a deeper understanding on the short-range physics for a more complete interpretation.
