Notes: Epitaxial thin films of ErAs were grown by molecular beam epitaxy on (100) GaAs. The lattice mismatch induced strain and subsequent lattice relaxation were studied using Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and ion channeling. The channeling results showed a strong thickness dependence for the backscattered minimum yield. Channeled angular scans showed the thin films to be fully strained up to 15 nm in thickness. Thicker films were found to relax with full relaxation not being reached until the 100-nm thickness range. The thick films were found to tilt up to 0.26° with respect to the crystal axes of the substrate. The tilt is apparently a result of the strain relaxation mechanism.

Notes: The regrowth of an oxygen-implanted YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin film was studied by Rutherford backscattering, ion channeling, and x-ray diffraction studies. The atomic composition of the thin film was preserved even after a 1 h anneal at 990 °C, reflecting the high chemical stability of the material obtained by the pulsed laser deposition technique. Two distinct activation energies were determined during the regrowth process: 0.42±0.04 eV at lower temperatures, corresponding to epitaxial growth from the interface, and 0.18±0.03 eV at higher temperatures, presumably associated with homogeneous nucleation and reorientation.

Notes: Superlattices of YBa2Cu3O7−x/YyPr1−yBa2Cu3O7−x(y=0.8 and 0.0) have been successfully grown in situ on MgO and LaAlO3 by using a multitarget pulsed laser deposition system. Satellite peaks have been observed in x-ray diffraction for the superlattices with modulation wavelengths from about few tens of angstroms to few hundred angstroms. The x-ray diffraction measurements also indicate that the multilayers have c axis normal to the substrates. Good crystallinity has been observed in the superlattices with He ion backscattering minimum yields of about 10%, indicating highly oriented growth. The presence of a periodic layer structure was further confirmed by the observation of composition oscillations in these structures by secondary-ion mass spectrometry.

Notes: Via the TDPAC technique and complementary x-ray diffraction analysis, the thermal decomposition of (NH4)2ZrF6 has been observed to occur in the range 400–800 K according to the thermolysis scheme (NH4)2ZrF6→485 KNH4ZrF5→560 KNH4Zr2F9 →620 KZrF4→760 KZrO2. Assuming that the first transformation takes place through the simple chemical reaction (NH4)2ZrF6→NH4ZrF5+NH4F, the corresponding activation energy has been determined to be Ea=(82±6) kJ/mol. The hyperfine parameters of the NH4Zr2F9 decomposition product have been determined between 14 and 560 K. A complete analogy with the isomorphous compound NH4Hf2F9 was observed.

Notes: A nanocrystalline ZrO2–10 mol% Y2O3 powder synthesized by a nitrate–citrate gel-combustion process and stabilized in the metastable t′′-form of the tetragonal phase has been characterized using mainly the Perturbed Angular Correlations technique. The determined hyperfine interaction allows a clear distinction between the zirconium surroundings in the t′′-form and those already known of the other forms of the tetragonal phase. Oxygen vacancies movement is revealed as a slow diffusion involving a very small activation energy. As the powder is heated, a transformation is observed to occur around 560°C, which is consistent with a t′′-to-cubic transition.

Notes: Abstract The administration of metaproterenol induced an increase in gastrocnemius muscle weight without change in body growth rate or tissue protein concentrations, while epididymal fat was reduced. This effect was accompanied by an enhancement in the levels of intracellular amino acids in muscle. By contrast, liver amino acids were unaffected by treatment with the mixed β-adrenergic agonist.

Notes: Abstract. The short-term effects of leptin and a β3-adrenoceptor agonist on thermogenesis and expression of uncoupling proteins (UCPs) in brown adipose tissue (BAT) and muscle and their possible interactions were assessed. One hour after administration of the β3-adrenoceptor agonist Trecadrine, a statistically significant increase in UCP1 messenger RNA (mRNA) expression in BAT was observed, whereas UCP2 and UCP3 in both BAT and gastrocnemius muscle were unaffected. Leptin induced an upregulation of UCP3 mRNA in muscle, with no changes in BAT UCP1 mRNA. A statistical interaction was found between leptin and Trecadrine in rectal temperature. The present study provides evidence, for the first time, of the induction of UCP3 mRNA expression in skeletal muscle by leptin in nongenetically obese animals.

Notes: Abstract Pea (Pisum sativum), faba bean (Vicia faba) and soybean (Glycine max) seeds were characterized, and protein isolates were prepared following an isoelectric point precipitation procedure. Soybean seeds showed the highest protein content (36.7%) and carbohydrate was the major constituent in the pea (59.4%) and the faba bean seeds (52.1%). Protein contents were higher than 80% in all the protein isolates. The amino acid contents in the protein isolates were, in general, higher than those in their own starting seeds. The antinutritional factor contents were reduced after the protein isolate preparation. The highest reductions achieved for tannins were 95% in the faba bean protein isolate, and for phytates (45%) and trypsin inhibitor activity (46%) in the pea protein isolate. Haemagglutinating activity was not detected in any of the protein isolates. Minimum solubility values were observed at a pH range between 4.0 and 6.0, and maximal solubilities were obtained at basic pH values. The faba bean protein isolate showed the highest water and oil absorption capacities, and the best gelling properties. The soybean protein isolate had the best foam expansion capacity. Thus, the protein isolates had an improvement in some of the characteristics compared to their original seeds with lower contents in tannins, phytates and haemagglutinating activity, but had weak functional properties.

Notes: Abstract A feeding trial was conducted in order to evaluate the potential effect on the lipid profile in a experimentally induced situation of hypercholesterolemia of a previously uninvestigated legume (Cicer aretinum L.) widely included in Mediterranean and Latinamerican human diets. Rats fed on a hypercholesterolemic diet containing saturated fat, cholesterol and cholic acid (H) had 123 percent higher serum cholesterol and 62 percent greater triacylglycerols levels than the animals receiving casein (C) protein. The LDL and VLDL cholesterol levels were 1330 percent and 35 percent higher, respectively, and HDL cholesterol 34 percent lower in the group of animals given the H diet as compared to controls. Further feeding of the hypercholesterolemic rats with animal protein (HC) resulted in a significant decrease of triacylglycerols (−70 percent), which reflected the decrease in the VLDL fraction. These effects on the lipid metabolism were more marked when the legumeCicer aretinum L. was present in the diet (HL). Significantly decreased concentrations of total cholesterol (−54 percent) and triacylglycerols (−70 percent) as well as the levels of LDL (−54 percent) and VLDL (−70 percent) were seen in rats fed chickpeas. In conclusion, a differential hypocholesterolemic effect between dietary casein and chickpea intake in a model of hypercholesterolemia induced by the diet was found, with beneficial effects on the lipid metabolism when legume was included in the diet as compared to casein. This suggests, for apparently the first time, that chickpea consumption may have a corrective effect in some alterations of the lipid profile.
