Notes: Filamentation has been examined in laser-produced plasmas in which magnetic fields are present, using a two-fluid model of the plasma. Configurations in which the low-frequency perturbation is in turn parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field have been considered and the instability examined in the two cases. In the latter it is shown that the instability is quenched by large enough fields, while for the ion-acoustic perturbation the behavior is more complex.

Notes: Summary Investigation of paranormal claims has failed to find any repeatable paranormal phenomena, yet beliefs in such phenomena are extemely prevalent. Some of the psychological mechanisms which support these beliefs are described. Mental imagery, subjective validation, coincidence, hidden causes, and fraud all contributeto the folklore in this field. Magical thinking is as evident today as it ever has been. Recent research suggests that increased skepticism concerning paranormal claims can result from special educational procedures which emphasize critical thinking rather than learning scientific facts.

Notes: [Auszug] Ten male volunteer subjects had not used marihuana before the experiment and ten were experienced social users. Median use was once a week for three years but this varied within the group. The two groups were matched for age and education. Cigarettes were prepared containing 700 mg of placebo ...

Notes: Abstract Our X-ray work of Dytek®-A, 2-methyl-pentamethylenediamine, containing polyamides shows polymorphism, whereas the polyamides with linear diamines do not. The polyamide of Dytek®-A and dodecanedioic acid, MPMD-12, is singled out for discussion and compared with the unbranched analogs of polyamides 6,12 and 5,12. Due to the presence of the -CH3 side group in the 2-position of the diamine, the polyamide MPMD-12 exhibits two stable crystal conformations. The new δ polymorph is not seen in linear polyamides 6,12 and 5,12. Studies by DSC polyamide MPMD-12 clearly illustrates at least two crystal forms, γ and δ, coexisting over a wide temperature range, and the isolation of each phase is possible by controlling temperature and time. The DMA modulus in the temperature region between the glass transition (or alpha relaxation) and melting transition shows strong dependence on the thermal history as demonstrated in a study of crystallization kinetics.

Notes: Summary Coelomocytes of the earthworm, Lumbricus terrestris, were studied by transmission electron microscopy. Four morphological cell types are distinguishable: lymphocytic coelomocytes, granulocytic coelomocytes, eleocytes (chloragogen cells), and inclusion-containing coelomocytes. Within these major categories, several distinct cell types differ and may represent developmental stages. The two types of lymphocytic coelomocytes are small with central nuclei and scanty cytoplasms. Two types of granulocytic coelomocytes differ greatly in shape and content; both have small dark-staining granules that resemble lysosomes. Electrocytes, derived from chloragogen tissue, contain a variety of granules, inclusions and vacuoles. Inclusion-containing coelomocytes appear as two types which may be immature and mature forms. Although these cells resemble those that have been referred to as erythroid cells in other invertebrates, the large inclusion bodies are apparently unrelated to hemoglobin; they can undergo morphologic transformation and be extruded by exocytosis. This information on lymphocytic, granulocytic and inclusion-containing coelomocytes is crucial to understanding more about cellular immunity in the earthworm.

Notes: Abstract A structural study of glass-ionomer cement (GIC) dental restoratives has been completed. Transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, and X-ray diffraction studies indicate domain-like microstructure in a new experimental material, whereas a featureless amorphous gel-like microstructure exists in the conventional GIC. Nuclear magnetic resonance studies were also conducted. The new experimental GIC contains domains of (i) bonelike material (apatite), (ii) mesoporous material and (iii) other framework structures (aluminium phosphate in the high cristobalite structure), with its setting chemistry a restructuring of the aluminosilicate glass around the template of poly(acrylic acid). Conventional glass-ionomer cement may set by a similar but slower process. Leaching properties of glass-ionomer cements are also explained.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Ein theoretisch fundiertes Modell berechnet zuverlässig die einfallende langwellige Strahlung bei klarem Himmel in abgelegenen alpinen Gebieten.
Notes: Summary A theoretically based model accurtely calculates incoming longwave radiation under clear sky conditions in a remote alpine area. Data requirements are relatively simple and because the model is theoretically based it can be widely applied. The model calculates atmospheric radiation using a form of Brutsaert's method that is adjusted for variations in air pressure and radiation from adjacent slopes. Tests of both point and areal applications indicate that the method gives reliable results. When applied as a segment of an energy balance snowmelt model, the model provides information on energy exchange in an alpine environment and improved snowmelt runoff prediction. Radiation from cloud cover and canopy cover can be more easily isolated by using the model to account for clear sky radiation. It is possible that it can also calibrate atmospheric effects in thermal satellite data, thus enhancing the possibilities for using satellite radiometry in alpine areas.
