    Description: The 40 ka caldera-forming eruption of Campi Flegrei (Italy) is the largest known erup- tion in Europe during the last 200 k.y., but little is known about other large eruptions at the volcano prior to a more recent caldera-forming event at 15 ka. At 29 ka a widespread volcanic ash layer, termed the Y-3 tephra, covered 〉150,000 km2 of the Mediterranean. The glass compositions of the layer are consistent with Campi Flegrei being the source, but no prominent proximal equivalent in the appropriate chrono-stratigraphic position had been previously identified. Here we report new glass chemistry data and 40Ar/39Ar ages (29.3 ± 0.7 ka [2σ]) that reveal the near-source Y-3 eruption deposit in a sequence at Ponti Rossi and a nearby borehole (S-19) in Naples. The dispersal and thickness of the deposits associ- ated with this eruption, herein named the Masseria del Monte Tuff, were simulated using a tephra sedimentation model. The model indicates that ~16 km3 dense rock equivalent of the magma erupted was deposited as fall. This volume and the areal distribution suggest that the Masseria del Monte Tuff resulted from a magnitude (M) 6.6 eruption (corresponding to volcanic explosivity index [VEI] 6), similar to the 15 ka caldera-forming Neapolitan Yellow Tuff (M 6.8) eruption at Campi Flegrei. However, the lack of coarse, thick, traceable, near- vent deposit suggests peculiar eruption dynamics. Our reconstruction and modeling of the eruption show the fundamental role that distal tephrostratigraphy can play in constraining the scale and tempo of past activity, especially at highly productive volcanoes.

    Description: Crystal zoning plays a fundamental role in modern volcanology as a key to unravel the geometry and the dynamics of plumbing systems. In this study, a detailed textural and compositional study of clinopyroxene crystals entrained in intrusive, hypabyssal and effusive products from Cima Pape (Dolomites) is coupled with thermobarometric-hygrometricmodels to reconstruct the geometry and evolution of the feeding systembeneath Middle Triassic volcanic edifices. Whole-rock major, trace element distribution and Sr-Nd isotopic signature (87Sr/86Sri = 0.7045–0.7050; 143Nd/144Ndi = 0.51223–0.51228) show that the rocks from Cima Pape are SiO2- saturated and have shoshonitic affinity, and likely belong to the acme of the Mid-Triassic magmatismthat shaped the Southern Alps between 239 and 237.6Ma. Highly porphyritic trachybasaltic to basaltic trachyandesitic volcanic rocks contain a large number of concentric-zoned clinopyroxene crystals. Here, high-Mg# and -Cr2O3, REEdepleted bands (Mg# 80–91; Cr2O3 up to 1.2 wt%) with variable thickness grew between relatively low-Mg# and -Cr2O3 (Mg# 70–77; Cr2O3 〈 0.1 wt%) augitic cores and rims. In contrast, the gabbroic to monzodioritic 50- to 300-m-thick sill cropping out belowthe volcanic sequences, though to represent a relic of the shallowest portion of the plumbing system, is mostly made up of unzoned clinopyroxene crystals. Thermobarometric and hygrometric models allowed us to define that a small “mush-type” batchwas located beneath the Cima Pape volcano at depths between 7 and 14 km. Here, augitic clinopyroxene formed in equilibrium with a slightly evolved (basaltic trachyandesitic), H2O-rich melt (Mg# = 43–45; T = 1035–1075 °C; H2O = 2.6–3.8 wt%). Periodic replenishments of the magma batch by primitive (Mg# = 65–70), hotter and relatively H2O-poor (T = 1130–1150 °C; H2O = 2.1–2.8 wt%) basaltic magmas led to the formation of diopsidic bands mantling the already formed augitic cores. Later on, re-equilibration of clinopyroxene with the mixed melt resulted in the formation of low-Mg#, LILE- and LREE-enriched rims. The most Mg-poor micro-phenocrystic clinopyroxene in the volcanic rocks and in the sill records the ultimate and shallowest conditions of crystallization, occurring at T of 975–1010 °C and P comprised between 50 and 150 MPa. Based on the presence of similar zoning in clinopyroxene phenocrysts, a comparison between the Mid-Triassic Cima Pape and active volcanoes was put forward to highlight the potential of studying ancient, entirely exposed volcanic systems for interpreting the feeding systemprocesses acting beneath active volcanoes. At a regional scale, this approach represents a new, powerful tool for investigating the evolution of the Mid-Triassic magmatism in the Southern Alps and shedding light on the interactions between mantle-derived melts and differentiated batches ponding in the crust.

    Description: Although often speculated, the link between theMiddle Triassic shoshonitic magmatismat the NE margin of the Adria plate and the subduction-related metasomatismof the Southern Alps Sub-Continental Lithospheric Mantle (SCLM) has never been constrained. In this paper, a detailed geochemical and petrological characterization of the lavas, dykes and ultramafic cumulates belonging to the shoshonitic magmatic event that shaped the Dolomites (Southern Alps) was used tomodel the composition and evolution of the underlying SCLMin the time comprised between the Variscan subduction and the opening of the Alpine Tethys. Geochemical models and numerical simulations enabled us to define that 5–7% partial melting of an amphibole + phlogopite-bearing spinel lherzolite, similar to the Finero phlogopite peridotite, can account for the composition of the primitive Mid-Triassic SiO2- saturated to -undersaturated melts with shoshonitic affinity (87Sr/86Sri = 0.7032–0.7058; 143Nd/144Ndi = 0.51219–0.51235; Mg # ~ 70; ~1.1 wt% H2O). By taking into account the H2O content documented in mineral phases from the Finero phlogopite peridotite, it is suggested that the Mid-Triassic SCLM source was able to preserve a significant enrichment and volatile content (600–800 ppm H2O) for more than 50 Ma, i.e. since the slab-related metasomatismconnected to the Variscan subduction. The partialmelting of a Finero-like SCLM represents the exhaustion of the subduction-related signature in the Southern Alps lithosphere that predated the Late Triassic-Early Jurassic asthenospheric upwelling related to the opening of the Alpine Tethys.

    Description: Sanidine from the Fish Canyon Tuff is regularly used as a neutron flux monitor by 40 Ar/ 39 Ar geochronologists. A new sampling of the Fish Canyon Tuff (denoted FCs-EK) has yielded sanidine that relative to FC-2 is confirmed here to have an R value of 0.9997 ± 0.0100, which is indistinguishable from 1. The new sample will allow for continuity as many 40 Ar/ 39 Ar laboratories have exhausted their supplies of FC-2. FCs-EK is now available in significant quantities from the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre.     Description: The dating of terrestrial impact craters and impact glasses that exhibit high degrees of mineralogical complexity can be problematic. However, if the maximum potential of the terrestrial impact crater record is to be realized, accurate and precise ages for crater-forming events are critical. Here we report a high-precision 40 Ar/ 39 Ar age for the Dellen impact structure, Sweden. Previous radio-isotopic constraints show a wide variation in age as a result of poor sample characterization and analytical approach. A detailed petrographical and mineralogical study provides a solid foundation for interpretation of step-heating 40 Ar/ 39 Ar data, culminating in a statistically robust age of 140.82 ± 0.51 Ma (2; full external precision) for the Dellen impact event, for which data disfavour an inherited argon component. Primary hydration of the impact melt during cooling–quenching and entrapment of molecular water promoted rapid loss of inherited 40 Ar from the impact melt of rhyolitic composition. Duplicate analyses of the water content and D of the glass give similar values for the former (1.9 ± 0.1 μmol mg –1 ) but unexpectedly low values for the latter (–159 ± 8), with scatter beyond the expected analytical reproducibility due to isotopic heterogeneity. This study highlights that the 40 Ar/ 39 Ar technique is unrivalled in its ability to precisely and accurately date the products of hypervelocity collisional events.     Description: The Caledonian orogenic belt of northern Britain hosts some significant quartz vein-hosted gold deposits. However, as in orogenic belts worldwide, the relationship between gold mineralization and regional tectonics, magmatism, and metamorphism is a matter of debate. This is primarily due to the absence of precise temporal constraints for the mineralization. Here we report high-precision 40 Ar/ 39 Ar and Re-Os ages for the largest known gold deposit at Curraghinalt (2.7 Moz) in Northern Ireland and use these ages to constrain the regional geologic setting of the gold mineralization and establish a genetic model. The gold resource is contained in a suite of quartz sulfide veins hosted by Neoproterozoic (Dalradian) metasediments, which have been thrust over an Ordovician island arc (Tyrone Igneous Complex). Previous studies recognized two generations of gold sulfide mineralization and we have identified a third in microshears that cut the veins. In the absence of precise geochronological data, mineralization ages from Ordovician to Carboniferous have been proposed. We have dated muscovite ( 40 Ar/ 39 Ar) in quartz vein-hosted clasts of Dalradian wall rock to 459.3 ± 3.4 Ma (all 40 Ar/ 39 Ar and Re-Os ages herein are reported at the 2 confidence level including all sources of uncertainty), an age that we interpret as representing the regional cooling path and which provides a maximum age constraint for all gold mineralization. This is consistent with the quartz veins postdating the end of main-stage deformation in the Grampian event of the Caledonian orogeny (ca. 465 Ma). Molybdenite (Re-Os) and sericite ( 40 Ar/ 39 Ar) from the newly identified gold-bearing microshears (third generation of gold mineralization) yield indistinguishable Re-Os models and 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages, with a combined age of 455.8 ± 3.0 Ma. The radioisotope ages and field evidence temporally constrain gold mineralization at Curraghinalt to the lower Late Ordovician. Data show that the gold mineralization was emplaced during the Grampian event of the Caledonian orogeny. The ca. 10 Ma maximum possible mineralization interval (462.7–452.8 Ma) for all three episodes of gold emplacement is postpeak metamorphism and main deformation, coinciding with a period of rapid uplift and extensional tectonics following orogenic collapse. While previous studies have suggested the involvement of magmatic fluids in the deposition of the primary gold resource, the absence of magmatism throughout most of the mineralization interval and the nature of the geologic setting suggest that crustal orogenic fluids should also be considered. Overall Curraghinalt displays most of the characteristics of orogenic gold deposits but also some important differences, which may be explained by the geologic setting. The timing of mineralization at Curraghinalt broadly coincides with the shift from compressional to extensional tectonics. The extensional regime, rapid uplift, and a crustal profile comprising metasediments overlying a still hot island arc were ideal for creating large and long-lasting hydrothermal systems deriving heat, metals, and some of the fluids from the underlying arc.
