    Notes: Abstract A finite element simulation for the steady flow in a planar stagnation die was used to compute the velocity, pressure and stress fields. It is predicted that a region surrounds the stagnation point where the flow approximates a planar extension. This region is circular for the Newtonian liquid and becomes an ellipse for the Maxwell fluid. An isotropic point in the stress field is found for the Newtonian case as well as for the Maxwell fluid. Lubrication of the die wall, modeled as a finite slip, increases the size of extensional flow region by as much as 100%, while causing a migration of the isotropic stress point towards the die wall. A slight increase in the apparent planar extensional viscosity occurs before the numerical scheme fails at deformation rates well below the extensional singularity in the Maxwell model. Slip at the walls does not significantly alter the convergence behavior, which appears to be limited by effects in the entry region. In this region, at a Weissenberg number of 1.16, spatial oscillations in the pressure, deformation rate and stress develop. The stress normal to the main flow direction in the entry region is compressive for all values of the slip coefficient.

    Notes: Abstract The solubility limits of solutions of poly (p-phenylene benzobisthiazole) (PBZT), poly(ether-ether-ketone), and two nylons (du Pont, Zytel®42 and Zytel®330) in methane sulphonic acid (MSA) were determined by turbidimetric titration with water. The solubilities rank as follows: Zytel®42 〉 Zytel®330 〉 PEEK 〉 PBZT. The coagulation of solutions of these polymers was examined in two limiting case: very slow (exposure to water vapour) and very fast (immersion in a water bath) coagulation rates. The slow coagulation of ternary solutions shows that PBZT may either precipitate first from the composite solutions or coprecipitate with the thermoplastic depending on their relative solubility. The immersion coagulation process can be described by a simple diffusion model and the diffusion coefficient of water in the polymer solution is determined to be on the order of 10−5 cm2s−1. Our results suggest that PBZT will coagulate first from ternary solutions of PBZT, nylon, and MSA during wet-spinning, resulting in a continuous microfibrillar network structure of PBZT followed by the precipitation of nylon.

    Notes: Abstract A method for preparing composite fibres by infiltrating nylon into swollen poly(p-phenylene benzobisthiazole) (PBZT) fibre is described. PBZT fibre forms a microfibrillar network structure during the coagulation process.In-situ network composite (IC) fibres may be prepared by exchanging the coagulant with a solution containing the desired matrix material. These new composite fibres exhibit nearly identical mechanical properties and similar thermomechanical properties to those of so-called molecular composite (MC) fibres prepared from isotropic solutions of PBZT and nylon in methane sulphonic acid (MSA), The mechanical properties of these fibres were determined before and after heat treatment under tension. The structure of pure PBZT and its composite fibres (ICs' and MCs') were characterized using nitrogen adsorption (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) experiments), small-angle X-ray scattering, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM, respectively). The structure of both composite fibres was found to be a microfibrillar network of PBZT in a matrix of amorphous nylon. The average diameters of the PBZT microfibrils were in the range of 10 to 20 nm forin-situ network composites and approximately 4 nm for molecular composites.

    Notes: The microstructure of composites made from blends of poly(p-phenylene benzobisthiazole) [PBT] and nylon 6,6 has been investigated with wide-angle X-ray diffraction, selected area electron diffraction, and small-angle X-ray scattering techniques. The composite samples investigated were spun in both fiber and film forms dilute solutions of methane sulfonic acid.The structure of the composites was found to be a microfibrillar network of PBT in a matrix of partially crystalline nylon 6,6. The diameters of the PBT microfibrils were in the range of 30 to 70 Å.

    Notes: The product compositions in single-feed distillation columns can be specified only in certain regions of the composition space, which depend only on the pressure, feed, and vapor-liquid equilibrium for the mixture. In nonideal mixtures, even without azeotropes, the regions may allow unusual product distributions. For example, the distillate in a “direct split” is composed primarily of the lightest component. Intuition and experience with relatively ideal mixtures suggest that the next most plentiful component is the intermediate boiler. In nonideal mixtures, however, with or without azeotropes, the next most plentiful component may be the highestboiling species with only trace amounts of the intermediate boiler. For azeotropic mixtures, distillation boundaries may give rise to additional restrictions on the product compositions. We describe how simple distillation boundaries deform into continuous distillation boundaries and, in a limited number of cases, how the simple distillation boundaries can be crossed in continuous columns for certain ranges of the design variables. Unfortunately, such designs may be quite sensitive to model uncertainties or to disturbances in the parameters.

    Notes: A method for the design of distillation systems for nonideal multicomponent mixtures is described, offering an alternative to extensive performance simulations. The basis is an analysis of the pinches or “fixed points” in the model equations and the results are widely applicable because approximations such as constant volatilities and ideal solutions are unnecessary. Tangent pinches are represented naturally as turning points in the diagram of pinch composition vs. reflux ratio, giving a basis for designs that alleviate the effects of tangent pinches in certain nonideal mixtures. An efficient computational approach for design is demonstrated in examples for homogeneous liquid mixtures, containing as many as four components, with and without azeotropic behavior. The results are in excellent agreement with detailed performance simulations.
