Description: Bathymetric changes in groundfish catch composition are analyzed, on the basis of routine reports of 106 bottom longline strings. The project was conducted from 12 December 1986 to 29 November 1987, covering areas from coastal waters to the outer shelf of the continental shelf off Argentina from 36° to 55°S. As a preliminary step to the analysis, the validity of each factor as probable explanatory variable in each area, was analyzed with consideration as to their range and variation. Obtained results show that the kingclip (Genypterus blacodes), a main objective of the project, could become one of the most profitable target species of the high-sea bottom longline, in areas along the outer edge of the continental shelf, at bottom depths slightly below 200 m. In this area the "bacalao criollo" (Salilota australis), was one of the most profitable by catch, or subsidiary target species to the kingclip. When lines were settled in the areas and depth zones covered by this and a preceding operation obtained results indicate that the Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi)could be neither the target species nor by-catch, due to the extremely poor catches. The Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides)lives in deeper grounds than those covered by most of the strings settled during the present projetc. The Argentine seabass (Acanthistius brasilianus)was considered one of the probable target species for coastal boats using bottom longline operations in inshore waters along the Patagonian coast. Smoothound (Mustelus spp.)were hooked abundantly over wide areas and have the potential of becoming one of the target species or a profitable by-catch. Grenadier fish (Fam.Macrouridae, several spp)were hooked abundantly by those parts of the strings that extendet to deeper grounds. Rosefish blackbelly (Helicolenus dactylopterus), Brazilian sandperch (Pseudopercis semifasciata), hagfish (Myxine spp.)and Argentine conger (Conger orbignyanus)were caught during the present operation, either in limited areas or at a low density, thus suggesting that none of those species could become a profitable by-catch.

Description: Some trials were made to find the substituting fishing method for bottom trawling to exploit the goundfishes in the Argentine Sea, especially those on the untrawlable grounds. The high sea bottom longlinning is one of the most prospective methods for this purpose. The present report dealt with the results of the trials of the bottom linglining conducted by the Koei-Maru n° 10, a Japanese commercial high sea bottom longliner of unique design, during the period from Oct. 25 to Dec.13 in 1987 along the outer edge of the continental shelf of the latitudes of 40 to 50 degrees south.

Notes: Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (2212) and Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (2223) superconductors were fabricated into silver-sheathed tapes by cold rolling and sintering. The resulting samples are compared in terms of microstructural alignment, critical current density, and strain dependence. Although both samples show good grain alignment, that of the 2212 phase is superior due to partial melting during heat treatment. This microstructural superiority is reflected in superior Jc as well. The single-filament and multifilament 2212 tapes have Jc (approximately-greater-than) 5 × 104 A/cm2 and Jc (approximately-greater-than) 1.5 × 104 A/cm2 at 20 T, respectively. Each material shows a similar dependence of Jc upon strain, with the 2223 phase exhibiting slightly more degradation. Furthermore, multifilamentary tapes were less affected by strain than single-filament tapes. A multifilamentary tape at 4.2 K, 0.5 T showed only a weak dependence upon strain, indicating that the strain dependence of the Bi system at low temperature may not be severe.

Notes: 180-MeV Cu11+ and Br11+ irradiations and 3-MeV electron irradiation were carried out on textured Bi-2212 tapes and the effects of irradiation on the microstructure and superconducting properties were investigated. Ion irradiation, which creates linear tracks, is very effective in increasing both intragrain Jc and irreversibility field at temperatures below 60 K when field is parallel to the tracks. At 60 K, an order of magnitude higher Birr is obtained for both Cu11+ and Br11+ irradiations. Electron irradiation which creates point defects, on the other hand, is not as effective as ion irradiation except for low temperatures of ∼4.2 K. Apparent pinning potential energy U0 was increased by ion irradiation from ∼15 to ∼40 meV at 41.8 K, while U0 was unchanged by the electron irradiation. However, even U0 of the ion-irradiated sample is still small. This small U0 increases flux creep at temperatures above 60 K and makes ion irradiation less effective. A small increase of transport Jc was obtained by both ion and electron irradiation for small fluences. However, a significant decrease of transport Jc occurred at fluences which optimize intragrain Jc.

Notes: 180 MeV Cu11+ irradiation was done on the c-axis grain oriented Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 tapes. Irradiation enhanced hysteresis in dc magnetization curves, especially in high magnetic fields. The irreversibility line can be moved to higher field by irradiation. Transport Jc is also enhanced by the irradiation of the small fluences. The irradiation produced large (∼100 nm) and small (∼5 nm) defects. They are effective for flux pinning in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8.

Notes: Anisotropy in Jc with respect to field direction for a textured Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2Ox tape was measured at various temperatures and magnetic fields. Anisotropy at 4.2 K was small enough for practical applications in fields up to 25 T. However, the anisotropy increases rapidly with increasing temperature. Angular dependence of Jc shows a history effect, which is characteristic of ceramic superconductors.

Notes: A zero resistance transition temperature of 108 K has been achieved for Pb-doped Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductors prepared by conventional powder solid-state reaction. The materials contained both the high Tc phase (Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox) and the low Tc phase (Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2Ox). Critical current density at 100 K in a zero magnetic field was 3.5 A/cm2 which was larger than that of the Pb-free sample.

Notes: Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2Ox superconducting tape with an excellent Jc at 4.2 K has been synthesized by a modified doctor-blade process. A green tape prepared by doctor-blade casting is laid on a silver foil and heat treated at various temperatures below and above its partial melting temperature. The Jc of the tape increases dramatically when heat treated in a narrow temperature range just above the melting temperature. A highly oriented layer structure with c-axis alignment is obtained by the growth of aligned Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2Ox grains in the partially melted state. This oriented microstructure produces an exceptional increase in Jc . Typical Jc 's of the tape at 4.2 K are 50 000 A/cm2 at 0 T, 22 000 A/cm2 at 10 T, and 17 000 A/cm2 at 23 T. Note the small magnetic field dependence in Jc above 10 T.

Notes: Magnetization measurements were performed at 77 K on Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O compounds having zero resistance temperatures at 103 and 82 K. The lower critical field Hc1 of the 103 K material was found to be 60% less than the Hc1 of YBa2Cu3O7. This suggests that the material has a higher Hc2 . The new compound also has less magnetization hysteresis than the YBa2Cu3O7 compound.

Notes: The Bi-(Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductor was fabricated into tapes with a Cu sheath. Measurements of magnetization and critical current density Jc in magnetic fields up to 23 T were made for them. The magnetization measurement revealed that, at 4.2 K, these tape specimens had excellent Jc -H(magnetic field) characteristics, while at 77 K, the flux pinning force in them was reduced to zero above 0.3 T due to the flux creep. In the resistive Jc measurement at 4.2 K, these tape specimens showed Jc of ∼7000 A/cm2 at 23. The Jc -H curve showed a slight peak effect, indicating the peak over 30 T.
