Notes: A compact and economical cooling system utilizing thermoelectric modules has been designed and constructed. The cooler is small and light and can be positioned close to the crystal. It is capable of cooling air at 101 min−1 to −15°C (258 K), and can maintain a set temperature to within ± 0.1°C (0.1 K) over long periods.

Notes: [Auszug] In an early examination1 of this 'electric sense' we suggested that the incoming electrical signals were 'smoothed5 at the electric receptors before being coded into impulses in the afferent nerves. This hypothesis was tested in a series of experiments2 in which a Gymnarchus niloticus was trained ...

Notes: [Auszug] Like hummingbirds, insects are ideal candidates for a test of the theories because most are capable of flight over a wide speed range, including hovering. The metabolic rate of insects in free forward flight has not been reported previously, although a few values have been published for tethered ...

Notes: [Auszug] ATHOUGH mechanics is undoubtedly part of physics, the relatively new and fashionable subject of biophysics has never laid claim to animal mechanics, which has therefore been able to lie low in zoology departments and in the pages of the Journal of Experimental Biology. Long may it remain so: animal ...

Notes: [Auszug] Measurements of the intensity of the radio star 05.01 were again made on frequencies of 210, 81-5 and 38 Mc./s. during the period June 5.20, 1952 ; as in the earlier observations, interferometers of large resolving power were used for reducing the amplitude of the record from the undisturbed sun. ...

Notes: [Auszug] It can be shown that if the radiation from a remote source passes near a spherical transparent body in which the refractive index increases outwards, and the angular separation between the source and the centre of the sphere is less than a certain value, no radiation from the source can reach the ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN a previous communication from this Laboratory, Stanier1 has described how he used an interference method to measure the distribution of ?radio brightness? across the solar disk at a frequency of 500 Mc./s. Notes: [Auszug] The three-dimensional structure of human chorionic gonadotropin shows that each of its two different subunits has a similar topology, with three disulphide bonds forming a cystine knot. This same folding motif is found in some protein growth factors. The heterodimer is stabilized by a segment of ...

Notes: Conclusions 1. Equation (5) indicates that the error in an isotropic state of stress does not depend on the properties of the material on which the gage is mounted, but it is a constant for the gage itself. (For example, ifK=+5 percent andν o=0.285, then the error will be +6.1 percent.) 2. Figure 2 indicates that the values of Δ2 become critical for values ofK b from 0.0 to −0.5 and the values of Δ1 become critical for values ofK b less than −2; i.e., for negative values ofK b we will find large percentage errors in either one of the principal stresses except ifK b lies between −0.5 and −2.0. On the other hand, the absolute values of the errors in either one of the principal stresses (i.e., |σi-σ1|) can be of great significance in that range; for example, ifQ 1=−400×10−6,Q 2=+200×10−6,K=5 percent, ν=0.3 andE=30×106 psi (21×1011 dynes/cm2) thenK b=−0.5 and Δ2≅-20 percent $$\begin{gathered} \therefore \dot \sigma _2 = \frac{E}{{1 - v^2 }}\left( {Q_2 + vQ_1 } \right) = + 2400{\text{ }}psi \hfill \\ \left( {154 \times 10^5 {N \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {N {m^2 }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {m^2 }}} \right) \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ and $$\left( {\dot \sigma _2 - \sigma _2 } \right) = - 480{\text{ }}psi$$ (−30.6×105 N/m2). The true value of σ2 would then be +2880 psi (184.3×105 N/m2). In such cases, it is clearly important to take transverse-sensitivity errors into account, specially when theK factor exceeds 2 or 3 percent. For positive values ofK b the percentage errors, in general, are less. Furthermore, the true values of the stresses are then less than the calculated values, so that in such cases it would be unnecessary to make corrections for the transverse sensitivity.

Notes: Abstract A complete photoelastic stress analysis depends, in the majority of cases, on the accuracy of the fractional-fringe-order measurements. The error involved due to an error in the measurement of the isoclinic angle has been studied. It was found that the Tardy method was more accurate than the Sénarmont method, assuming negligible errors in the optical elements.
