    Notes: Summary The thyroid gland of three species of marmosets were studied with the Falck and Hillarp fluorescence technique for monoamines. Two types of fluorescent C cells were observed. The predominant type displayed the greenish (or blue) fluorescence characteristic of catecholamines. The other type displayed a yellowish fluorescence most probably due to 5-HT. The presence of monoamines in C cells now reported for the first time in Primates offers an interesting possibility for studying their presumed role in calcitonin secretion.

    Notes: The intraglandular distribution of adrenergic and cholinergic nerve fibers was studied histochemically in the parotid, mandibular, and sublingual glands of six species of edentates belonging to the three families that comprise the order; namely, the Dasypodidae (armadillos), the Myrmecophagidae (anteaters), and the Bradipodidae (sloths). The following histochemical techniques were used: (a) acetylcholinesterase reaction for the demonstration of cholinergic fibers; (b) formaldehyde- and glyoxylic acid-induced fluorescence for the demonstration of adrenergic fibers. In addition, norepinephrine (NE) was assayed fluorimetrically in the mandibular and parotid glands of the armadillo. A network of acetylcholinesterase-positive nerve fibers surrounds the intra- and interlobular ducts and endpieces of all glands; it is of low density in the mandibular and sublingual gland of the sloth, of high density in the sublingual gland of the anteater and of moderate density in the remaining glands. A vascular cholinergic innervation occurs in all salivary glands. Although present around the vessels, adrenergic new fibers were virtually absent from the parenchyma of all glands, even after in vitro incubation of glandular tissue with NE, or after administration of NE to armadillos previously treated with a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor. Consistent with this fact, the amount of NE present in the parotid and mandibular gland of the armadillo was extremely low. These findings may indicate that the salivary secretion in the edentates is regulated by the parasympathetic rather than by the sympathetic nervous system.

    Notes: Summary The mast cells located in the intestinal mucosa of a non-eutherian mammal were studied in comparison with those in the skin of the ear. In the intestinal mucosa, the mast cells exhibited a more variable shape, larger cytoplasmic granules and greater sensitivity to fixatives regarding their staining towards Toluidine Blue. Ultrastructurally, these granules were more heterogeneous but lacked the crystalline content found in granules of skin mast cells; lipid body-like organelles were found only in the mucosa-located mast cells. Histochemically, they differed from skin mast cells by the absence of periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-positive granules. Unlike the mucosal mast cells of the rat, they fluoresced brilliant yellow after berberine treatment, which is evidence of the presence of heparin.

    Notes: Summary The distribution and density of the noradrenergic and acetylcholinesterase-positive nerve fibres were histochemically studied in different uterine regions of prepubertal and cycling rats in dioestrus and oestrus. Besides the rich and double innervation of blood vessels, both types of nerve fibre were found in the myometrium and cervical musculature. The non-vascular noradrenergic network looked denser at the tubal end of the horns and at the cervix, whereas the acetylcholinesterase-positive innervation was poor at the tubal end, increasing toward the cervix. Contrasting with the middle third of the uterine horn, at the tubal end, the myometrial longitudinal layer was much more innervated than the circular one, especially by the noradrenergic nerve fibres. The prepubertal rats presented an adult pattern of uterine autonomic innervation. In the cycling animals, this innervation was nearly the same during oestrus and dioestrus regarding both the density of nerve fibres and intensity of the histochemical reactions.

    Notes: Summary Using histological and histochemical techniques, we have found a unique population of mast cells in the lymphatic sinuses of lymph nodes from different anatomical regions of the opossum. The lymphatic-sinus mast cells of the medullary sinuses were numerous, and could be easily distinguished from the connective-tissue mast cells of the dermis and lymph node capsule by their larger size and their enlarged cytoplasmic granules that were also more heterogeneous in shape and staining properties.
