    Description: Mt. Nyiragongo is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world for the risk associated with the propagation of lava flows. In 2002 several vents opened along a huge system of fractures, pouring out lava which reached and destroyed a considerable part of Goma, a town of about 500,000 inhabitants on the shore of Lake Kivu. In a companion paper (Favalli et al. in Bull Volcanol, this issue, 2008) we employed numerical simulations of probable lava flow paths to evaluate the lava flow hazard on the flanks of the volcano, including the neighbouring towns of Goma (DRC) and Gisenyi (Rwanda). In this paper we use numerical simulations to investigate the possibility of significantly reducing the lava flow hazard in the city through the construction of protective barriers. These barriers are added to the DEM of the area as additional morphological elements, and their effect is evaluated by repeating numerical simulations with and without the presence of barriers. A parametric study on barrier location, size, shape and orientation led to the identification of barriers which maximize protection while minimizing their impact. This study shows that the highest hazard area corresponding to eastern Goma, which was largely destroyed by lava flows in 2002, cannot be effectively protected from future lava flows towards Lake Kivu and should be abandoned. On the contrary, the rest of the town can be sheltered from lava flows by means of two barriers that deviate or contain the lava within the East Goma sector. A proposal for the future development of the town is formulated, whereby “new” Goma is completely safe from the arrival of lava flows originating from vents outside its boundaries. The proposal minimizes the risk of further destruction in town due to future lava flows.

    Notes: Efficient mode locking of a flash-lamp-pumped Nd:YAG laser at 1.064 μm is achieved by combining the passive–positive feedback of a frequency doubling nonlinear mirror (FDNLM) and the passive–negative feedback of a GaAs platelet. the FDNLM consists of a BBO crystal and of a dichroïc mirror. Pulse durations as short as 12 ps are obtained. Temporal evolution of pulse duration in the pulse train is presented and discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report on the performances of the mode locking of a flash-lamp-pumped Nd:YAG laser using a frequency-doubling nonlinear mirror combined with a two-photon absorber. Pulse lengths from 12 to 8 ps are generated. We show that the flat shape of the pulse-train envelope generated by the oscillator is adapted for the synchronous pumping of optical parametric oscillators and we demonstrate the efficient generation of an infrared beam tunable from 3800 to 1100 cm−1 with bandwidth of 2 cm−1 in one single conversion stage in LiNbO3 or AgGaS2. The "all-solid-state" laser system enables surface sum-frequency generation spectroscopy to be performed with high sensitivity and high resolution. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A numerical study is made of the impurity photovoltaic (IPV) effect in crystalline Si p-n junction solar cells. Application is made to In impurities whose energy level is at 0.157 eV above the valence band edge. The numerical resolution of Poisson's equation and the continuity equations for electrons, holes and defect levels yields the current–voltage curves for different impurity concentrations Nt, from which the short-circuit current density Jsc, the open-circuit voltage Voc, and the energy conversion efficiency η is obtained. It is shown that increasing the defect concentration Nt with respect to the background donor concentration leads to an increase of Jsc but decreases Voc and η. A modified defect concentration profile in a p-n-n+ structure is suggested to extract the maximum benefit from the IPV effect. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Develops a fine element method employing Galerkin's approach for the analysis of a vertical tubular bubble absorber working with R22-DMF as working fluid. Aims to provide an understanding of the absorption process which helps in the design of bubble absorbers. Numerical experiments have also been carried out with ammonia-water combination for the sake of comparison with the results in the literature and the agreement is found to be good. Suggests a correlation for mass transfer coefficient for vertical tubular bubble absorbers working with R22-DMF. The use of the correlation can either be in estimating the mass transfer rates, or in fixing up the major design parameters such as diameter and length required for complete absorption.

    Notes: The effect of amino (trimethylene phosphonic acid), (ATMP), molybdate and Zn2+ on the inhibition of corrosion of mild steel in a neutral aqueous environment containing 60 ppm Cl- has been evaluated by the weight - loss method. It is found that the formulation consisting of 50 ppm ATMP, 300 ppm MoO42- and 50 ppm Zn2+ has 96 per cent inhibition efficiency. The nature of the protective film has been analysed by X-ray diffraction technique FTIR and luminescence spectra. It seems that the protective film consists of Fe2(MoO4)3, ZnMoO4, Fe2+-ATMP complex and Zn(OH)2. This film is found to be luminescent.
