    Abstract: The book will be of interest to researchers and practitioners in the field of hydrology, environmental engineering, agricultural engineering, earth sciences, and watershed and range sciences, as well as to those engaged in water resources planning, development and management in arid and semi-arid areas. Given the lack of literature on arid regions, this book not only provides an assessment of water resource management in arid regions but also addresses solutions, and it can also be an outstanding textbook on water resources management and sustainability for arid regions. This volume in the Water Science and Technology Library includes selected papers that have been presented and discussed during the International Water Resources Management and Sustainability: Solutions for Arid Regions, 22–-24 March 2022, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The conference was organized by the National Water and Energy Center, UAE University, in collaboration with the South Australian Goyder Institute for Water Research, and the Department for Environment and Water, Government of South Australia. The conference attracted a large number of nationally and internationally well-known experts who have been at the forefront of water resources management and sustainability in arid and semi-arid regions. More than 55 countries, covering the five continents, were represented. The conference was designed to facilitate and encourage new perspectives on how science and innovative technologies can transform water management and sustainability in arid and semi-arid regions around the world. It addressed current challenges and priorities in water management and provided a forum to share knowledge, experiences, research, and discoveries.

    Description: A magnetic pole enhanced inductively coupled H e - N 2 / A r plasma is studied at low pressure, to monitor the effects of helium mixing on plasma parameters like electron number density   ( n e ) , electron temperature   ( T e ) , plasma potential ( V p )   , and electron energy probability functions (EEPFs). An RF compensated Langmuir probe is employed to measure these plasma parameters. It is noted that electron number density increases with increasing RF power and helium concentration in the mixture, while it decreases with increase in filling gas pressure. On the other hand, electron temperature shows an increasing trend with helium concentration in the mixture. At low RF powers and low helium concentration in the mixture, EEPFs show a “bi-Maxwellian” distribution with pressure. While at RF powers greater than 50 W and higher helium concentration in the mixture, EEPFs evolve into “Maxwellian” distribution. The variation of skin depth with RF power and helium concentration in the mixture, and its relation with EEPF are also studied. The effect of helium concentrations on the temperatures of two electron groups (   T b u l k and   T t a i l ) in the “bi-Maxwellian” EEPFs is also observed. The temperature of low energy electron group (   T b u l k ) shows significant increase with helium addition, while the temperature of tail electrons (   T t a i l )   increases smoothly as compared to (   T b u l k ) .

    Description: Pieh Islands located at the Western Sumatra is one of the most affected areas by massive coral bleaching during 2015-2016. The persistence warming or cooling of sea surface temperature due to regional climate phenomena such as El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) put the coral reef into stress condition leading into coral bleaching. However, corals have an ability to recover from such bleaching condition into normal state by reducing its stressors. A suitable oceanographic condition such as normal range of temperature and salinity, low nutrient concentration, and low sedimentation rate could support corals recovery process. This study aims to understand the variability of the ocean and atmospheric data and its role in coral reef recovery.     Description: The conservation status of 845 zooxanthellate reef-building coral species was assessed by using International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List Criteria. Of the 704 species that could be assigned conservation status, 32.8% are in categories with elevated risk of extinction. Declines in abundance are associated with bleaching and diseases driven by elevated sea surface temperatures, with extinction risk further exacerbated by local-scale anthropogenic disturbances. The proportion of corals threatened with extinction has increased dramatically in recent decades and exceeds that of most terrestrial groups. The Caribbean has the largest proportion of corals in high extinction risk categories, whereas the Coral Triangle (western Pacific) has the highest proportion of species in all categories of elevated extinction risk.     Description: Severe coral bleaching events are always associated with El-Ninō phenomenon which caused a rise in ocean temperature between 1-2°C and that they potentially kill the corals worldwide. There were at least four severe coral bleaching events occurred in the Indonesian waters. This study aims to compare the coral bleaching events of the 2010 and 2016 and their impact on corals in Indonesian waters. Long-term (2002-2017) remotely sensed night time sea surface temperature (SST) data acquired from Aqua MODIS Satellite were used in the analysis. Here, we calculated the mean monthly maximum (MMM)of SST as SST in normal condition in which coral can adapt to temperature; the differences between high SST in each pixel during coral bleaching events of the 2010/2016 and MMM SST, called hot spot (HS); and how long has HS occupied a certain water body, called degree of heating weeks (DHW, °C-week) and then mapped it.     Notes: Summary Fewer larvae ofMeloidogyne incognita invaded and fewer galls were formed when seedlings of nonresistant varieties of tomato, eggplant and chilli were growing in soil to which oilcakes of mahua, castor, neem/margosa, mustard and groundnut had been added. Chemical analysis of plant tissue showed that, compared with untreated plants, plants growing in treated soil contained greater concentrations of phenols and frequently of amino acids, proteins and carbohydrates.

    Notes: Summary A study of the external and internal fungi associated with different varieties ofSorghum seeds has been made. The varieties tested included eighteen local varieties and twelve newSorghum varieties obtained from the Rockefeller Foundation. The external fungi were studied by preparing suspensions of superficial fungi and growing on potato dextrose agar. The internal fungi were studied by planting surface sterilized seeds on P.D.A. and pure cultures of all these fungi were prepared. The external fungi found to be associated with the different varieties included different species ofPhycomyces, Circinella, Syncephalastrum, Chaetomium, Curvularia, Cladosporium, Helminthosporium, Montospora, Pullularia, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Cephalosporium, Trichoderma, Phoma, Fusarium. The internal fungi recovered from these varieties included species ofChaetomium, Cladosporium, Curvularia, Helminthosporium, Heterosporium, Hormodendron, Pullularia, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Blastomyces, Monilia, Penicillium, Fusarium, Phoma, Phomopsis. Varieties 4403B, 1060 and 503 were found to carry a large number of fungi. Variety Black spanish was found to be entirely free from any internal or external fungus. Varieties which were free from endophytic fungi but possess external fungi only were Kaoling 301, African variety 901 and Shallus 475. Three fungi viz.,Pullularia, Heterosporium, Monilia have been recovered from theSorghum seeds for the first time.
