    Notes: The elasticity of risky sexual behavior to changes in local HIV infection prevalence is estimated using a longitudinal survey of the sexual behavior and health of gay men in San Francisco during the 1980s. An average respondent decreases risky behavior by about 5% in response to a 10% increase in disease prevalence. The average response obscures substantial variation across respondents: High-risk people reduce risky behavior less than low-risk people as prevalence increases. This result is consistent with the predictions of theoretical economic epidemiology and has implications for epidemic dynamics.

    Notes: Explores the impact of divorce upon the fashion consumption of divorced men. Based upon 104 semi-structured interviews with divorced men, the study identifies four stages of fashion shopping behaviour of divorced male consumers. In particular, the study notes that divorced men expect fashion retailers to provide a range of services in order to minimise the risk and uncertainty that they experience while shopping for fashion. The experiences of respondents indicate that their service expectations are generally left unsatisfied. As such, there are obvious opportunities for fashion retailers to differentiate their positioning through the provision of relevant customer services to all male consumers and not only those that are divorced.

    Notes: The diaspore of the Australian arid zone shrub Acacia ligulata is dispersed by birds and ants. To investigate the benefits of providing a dispersal structure attractive to both groups, we compared the germination response and viability of seeds eaten by birds, handled by ants or collected from trees to simulated precursors of germination: scarification, fire and rainfall were simulated. Seed germination and viability were related to the degree of preheating disturbance to the seed coat. Heating increased the germinability of seeds not scarified or eaten by birds. In the absence of heating, ingestion by birds increased germinability. Heating increased the mortality of seeds. Our results suggest that ingestion of seeds by birds may break seed dormancy and hence enable some seeds to germinate soon after dispersal. Alternatively, seeds not eaten by birds are likely to remain dormant until sufficiently scarified by soil or stimulated by fire. Consequently, in areas such as the Simpson Desert, A. ligulata may be able to use a range of seedling establishment ‘windows’ provided by monsoon rains, post-fire environments and unseasonal winter rains, and also spread the risk of unsuccessful seedling establishment by retaining dormant seeds in the seedbank.

    Notes: Abstract During peak thermogenesis of anthesis, high rates of respiration by the sterile male florets on the spadix ofPhilodendron selloum significantly reduce the oxygen tension (PO 2) and raise CO2 tension between the florets. Nevertheless, respiration is not limited by the availability of O2 under natural conditions. At experimental PO 2 below about 17 kPa, however, florets begin to show decreased O2 consumption. A respiratory exchange ratio of 0.83 indicates that the major energy source is not starch, but is probably lipid.

    Notes: Abstract During a 2-d sequence of anthesis, the spadices of the thermogenic arum lily, Philodendron selloum, regulated maximum temperature within a small range (37–44°C) by reversible thermal inhibition of respiratory heat production. This response protects the inflorescence and the attracted insects from thermal damage. Heat production by whole spadices, measured by O2 respirometry, equalled heat loss, measured by gradient layer calorimetry, which confirmed the heat equivalence of O2 consumption (20.4 J ml-1). This also indicated that there was no net phosphorylation during thermogenesis, heat production being the primary function of high rates of respiration. The sterile male florets consumed about 30 ml g-1 h-1 and the average 124-g spadix produced about 7 W to maintain a 30°C difference between spadix and ambient temperature. Most of the energy for thermogenesis is present in the florets before anthesis. Despite high respiratory rates, thermogenesis is an energetically inexpensive component of the reproductive process.

    Notes: Summary Control of extracellular acid-base status was examined during activity and dormancy inOtala lactea (Pulmonata, Helicidae). Active snails showed little variation in hemolymph pH and $$P_{CO_2 } $$ at constant temperature. With increase of temperature, hemolymph $$P_{CO_2 } $$ increased from about 6 Torr at 5°C to 13 Torr at 24°C and pH decreased by about 0.017 pH units/°C, a pattern consistent with alphastat regulation of pH via ventilatory control of $$P_{CO_2 } $$ . During dormancy, mean hemolymph $$P_{CO_2 } $$ increased to about 50 Torr. Venous pH declined by about 0.4 units due to hypercapnia and fluctuated more widely than in active snails due to variability of $$P_{CO_2 } $$ . Hemolymph pH declined further in prolonged dormancy due to progressive metabolic acidosis; after one year of dormancy the mean hemolymph pH was about 0.8 units lower than that of active snails at similar temperature. Active snails exposed experimentally to high $$P_{CO_2 } $$ showed a large increase in hemolymph [HCO 3 − ]. However, [HCO 3 − ] declined by up to 50% during dormancy, despite the naturally occurring hypercapnia. Hemolymph osmolality and the concentrations of solutes other than [HCO 3 − ] increased with increasing duration of dormancy. Concentrations of magnesium and calcium increased about 2.5 times more rapidly than those of sodium and chloride, indicating that acidosis is partially offset by the dissolution of carbonates from the shell or tissues.
