On the Dimerization of Sorbic AcidDimerization of sorbic acid (1) and its methyl ester (2) with and without montmorillonit as catalyst leads to the cyclohexenes 3 to 10. Structure and configuration of these compounds are established by NMR-spectroscopic methods. The main product 3 has the two carboxyl groups in 1,3-position; this is in agreement with frontierorbital considerations. Treatment of 3 or 10 with alkali leads to 11 and 12, respectively.

Die Dimerisierung von Sorbinäure (1) bzw. Sorbinsäure-methylester (2) mit und ohne Montmorillonit als Katalysator liefert die Cyclohexene 3-10, die durch Diels-Alder-Cycloaddition entstanden sind. Struktur und relative Konfiguration der Produkte wurden mit Hilfe der NMR-Spektroskopie bestimmt. Das Hauptprodukt 3 besitzt die Carboxylgruppen in 1,3-Position am Cyclohexenring, im Einklang mit Frontier-Orbital-Betrachtungen. Behandelt man 3 oder 10 mit Alkali, so erhält man 11 bzw. 12.
