Notes: [Auszug] THERE seems little doubt that most of the organic products (including dimers and polymers) of the radiolysis of n-alkanes and cyclo-alkanes are formed by free radical ractions. This conclusion follows from measurements of yields of free radical using chemical determination or electron paramagnetic ...

Notes: Abstract The European pine sawfly, Neodiprion sertifer (Geoffroy) (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae), is a widespread and economically important forest insect. The sex pheromone communication system of this species has been previously investigated in North America, Japan and Europe, with the acetate or propionate of the alcohol (2S,3S,7S)-3,7-dimethyl-2-pentadecanol (diprionol) shown to be the main pheromone component. In some locations, male attraction either increased or decreased by the addition of the (2S,3R,7R)-diprionyl acetate isomer. However, these studies were made with different batches of synthetic pheromones, with different types of traps and according to different procedures, so the observed differences might not reflect true geographic variation. Here we investigate the geographic pattern of male sawfly response by using identical chemicals, traps and experimental procedures at eight field sites ranging from Japan in the east to Canada in the west. We found an increased inhibitory effect of the (2S,3R,7R)-isomer from Japan and Siberia to Europe. At the eastern sites, increasing amounts of the (2S,3R,7R)-isomer up to and equal to the amount of the (2S,3S,7S )-isomer, did not influence the trap catch, whereas at sites in Europe, as little as 1% of the (2S,3R,7R)-isomer almost completely inhibited the attraction. The response of the North American population was intermediate. The only site in which the (2S,3R,7R)-isomer was essential for the attraction of males was in Siberia. A similar pattern was found for the (2S,3R,7S)-isomer. Both the acetate and the propionate form of the (2S,3S,7S)-isomer were attractive by themselves in Japan, Europe and North America, and neither the (2S,3R,7S)-isomer nor the (2S,3R,7R)-isomer alone were attractive, in the acetate or propionate form. We discuss the significance of our findings for the development of more efficient monitoring schemes and for the causes of population divergence and speciation in the European pine sawfly.

Notes: Abstract Design guidelines for conductor backed coplanar waveguide are reviewed. A range of coplanar waveguide discontinuities for use in a 44 GHz monolithic low noise amplifier and appropriate equivalent circuits are presented. The discontinuities are characterised over the frequency range 30–60 GHz. Details of the fabrication process for the test structures are also given.

Notes: Abstract The possibility of using beam-lead diodes in the design of a 140GHz subharmonically pumped mixer was investigated. An easily assembled, rugged mixer structure was developed which avoids the problems associated with present production techniques and reduces costs. The construction of the circuit developed makes it ideally suited to space and other environmentally demanding application. Computer analysis techniques were used to predict millimetre-wave performance and a large-scale low-frequency model was used to optimize the circuit. The millimetre-wave mixer was constructed using a circuit implemented on suspended substrate stripline. Results of millimetre-wave performance are presented.

Notes: Abstract An ordinary mode IMPATT-based reflectometer operating over 26.5–110GHz has been developed for density diagnostic application on the RFX reversedfield pinch experimental fusion machine. The reflectometer uses polarization rotators located at the antennas for optimizing the polarization of the emitted E-field A sweep speed of 1.25ms for the full band is possible. Single subbands may be swept at a rate of 200us. The provision of polarization rotators and high-speed solid-state oscillators maximises the immunity of the system to the effects of high fluctuation frequencies and mode mixing due to high magnetic shear. The reflectometer uses an IMPATT oscillator system for the source which has not been used in previous reflectometer circuits. A previously unachievable temporal resulution is therefore available with this system. The reflectometer is the first to be developed for use on a reversed-field pinch (RFP) machine. Verification of reflectometer operation was achieved using plane metal targets to simulate the reflecting plasma cut-off layer. Targets were located at various distances from the antennas to cover the expected spatial reflection range. The theoretical and experimental characteristics were obtained by processing the intermediate frequency output of the detectors. Spurious signals are removed by calibrating the target data using residual fringe data. A zero-crossing detection algorithm was developed to accurately identify the beat fringes and to deduce the phase/frequency characteristic. Single subband and full sweep results are presented.

Notes: Abstract A design for a submillimeter quasi-optical multiplier is evaluated both experimentally and theoretically. It is concluded that multipliers should use separate pump and harmonic waveguides to facilitate independent optimisation of the fundamental and harmonics. In addition, the harmonic waveguide should be single moded at the output at least, to prevent power loss to higher order modes.
