Notes: Abstract An analysis is made of a two-electron system of two adjacent quantum dots (QD) with a two-dimensional parabolic lateral confining potential, and of two coupled or double, spatially separated QDs (a “horizontal” and a “vertical” QD molecule), and of their behavior in an external transverse magnetic field. The ground-state energies and energy spectra of the system have been determined by various methods (Heitler-London, molecular-orbital, variational approach, and numerical diagonalization of Hamiltonian), with inclusion of electron-electron interaction, and for a broad range of confining-potential steepness, QD-center spacing (interlayer distance), and external magnetic field.

Notes: Abstract The indirect Mott exciton (spatially-separated electron and hole) in coupled quantum wells in crossed electric and magnetic fields is discussed. The exciton spectrum is calculated for the case where the distance between the quantum wells of the electron and hole is larger than the exciton Bohr radius. The magnetoexciton creation probability is calculated and its dependence on the electric field is found. The absorption of electromagnetic radiation between the indirect magnetoexciton levels in coupled quantum wells is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Quasi-particle spectra, reconstructed by e-h pairing, have been calculated for a system of spatially separated electrons (e) and holes (h) in ground state. The regions of strong pairing interaction and significant correlation effects are reached by abandoning the BCS approximation and using instead interpolation expressions for correlation energies, which depend functionally on the coefficients of the u-v transformation, with subsequent minimization of the total energy of the reconstructed state with respect to the parameters of the u-v transformation. The dependence of the spectra on quantum-well separation and particle concentration in a system of two coupled quantum wells is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Quantum crystallization of electrons in a quantum dot (QD) subjected to an external magnetic field is considered. Two-electron QDs with two-dimensional (2D) parabolic confining potential in an external transverse magnetic field are calculated. The Hamiltonian is numerically diagonalized in the basis of one-particle functions to find the energy spectra and wave functions for the relative motion of electrons with inclusion of electron-electron interaction for a broad range of the confining-potential steepness (α) and external magnetic fields (B). The region of the external parameters (α, B) within which a gradual transition to quantum crystalline order occurs is numerically determined. In contrast to a 2D unbounded system, a magnetic field acts nonmonotonically on “crystallization” in a quantum dot with several electrons because of a competition between two effects taking place with increasing B, namely, decreasing spread of the electron wave functions and increasing effective steepness of the confining potential, which reduces the average separation between electrons.

Notes: Abstract The phase diagram of a two-dimensional mesoscopic system of charges or dipoles, whose realizations could be electrons in a semiconductor quantum dot or indirect excitons in a system of two vertically coupled quantum dots, is investigated. Quantum calculations using ab initio Monte Carlo integration along trajectories determine the properties of such objects in the temperature-quantum de-Boer-parameter plane. At zero (sufficiently low) temperature, as the quantum fluctuations of the particles increase, two types of quantum disordering phenomena occur with increasing quantum de Boer parameter q: first, for q∼10−5 the systems transform into a radially ordered but orientationally disordered state wherein various shells of the “atom” rotate relative to one another. For much larger q∼0.1, a transition occurs to a disordered state (a superfluid in the case of a system of bosons).

Notes: Abstract Two-dimensional Wigner microclusters in a semiconductor dot are studied. Their melting is investigated in detail and it is shown that, for typical mesoscopic clusters possessing a shell structure, melting occurs in two stages: orientational melting (rotation of the shells relative to one another) and total melting, where the shells start to overlap with one another and exchange particles. An example of a “magic” microstructure which has a triangular structure and melts in a single stage is presented. For this, the temperature dependences of various quantities characterizing cluster structure are investigated. The change in the distribution of cluster configurations over local minima of the potential energy with increasing temperature is investigated. At temperatures below the temperature of total melting, a cluster is always located near the configuration of a global minimum and, at temperatures above the temperature of complete melting, a cluster can be located with finite probability near configurations corresponding to various local minima of the potential energy.

Notes: Abstract Quantum fluctuations of the phases of the order parameter in two-dimensional arrays of mesoscopic Josephson junctions and their effect on the destruction of superconductivity in the system are investigated by means of a quantum-cosine model that is free of the incorrect application of the phase operator. The proposed model employs trigonometric phase operators and makes it possible to study arrays of small superconducting granules, pores containing superfluid helium, or Josephson junctions in which the average number of particles n 0 (effective bosons, He atoms, and so on) is small, and the standard approach employing the phase operator and the particle number operator as conjugate operators is inapplicable. There is a large difference in the phase diagrams between arrays of macroscopic and mesoscopic objects for n 0〈5 and U〈J (U is the characteristic interaction energy of the particles per granule and J is the Josephson coupling constant). Re-entrant superconductivity phenomena are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The spectral dependence of the electron-phonon relaxation rate γe−ph(ℏω) in metals is studied in pump-supercontinuum-probe (PSCP) experiments with femtosecond time resolution. Investigation of this spectral dependence, which exhibits a substantial slowing of the relaxation rate γe−ph(ℏω) near the Fermi level E F , using the parametrization γe−ph(ℏω)∝λ〈Ω2〉 (ℏω−E F )2 makes it possible to determine directly the electron-phonon interaction parameter λ〈Ω2〉. The parameter λ〈Ω2〉 for YBa2Cu3O7−δ is analyzed using this method.
