Summary In Schizosaccharomyces pombe the experiments performed in order to assess some possible influence of caffeine on biological processes related to the induced or spontaneous mutations and meiotic recombinations, have shown that caffeine decreases UV- and NG-induced forward mutations at ad-6 and ad-7 loci and UV-induced reverse-mutations of his - mutants whereas spontaneous mutations to adenine or histidine independence were not affected; intergenic meiotic recombinations in the MT chromosomal region were also decreased when caffeine was present in the crossing medium.
