Notes: The operation of a novel monolithic sapphire transducer from room temperature to cryogenic temperature is presented. The transducer is a microwave sapphire resonator that senses the motion of internal acoustic resonances through the interaction between electric and acoustic fields. The system is noncontacting and has low mechanical and electrical losses. Also, the microwave characteristics of sapphire are used as an inherent temperature sensor. High mechanical quality factors of 108 and 4.5×108 were attained at 300 and 4 K, respectively. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A sapphire monocrystal configured with a parametric microwave readout can potentially monitor the motion of its internal acoustic resonances at the precision governed by quantum mechanical fluctuations. The mechanism of transductance is due to parametric interaction between the electric and acoustic field within the crystal. This mechanism has been tested for the first time, and the theory has been verified by observing the pump frequency dependence of the acoustic quality factor. Because of the extremely low acoustic losses (Q〉107) and electrical losses (Q〉104), measurements were sensitive enough to attain positive verification at room temperature. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Aeromagnetic anomalies measured over the three relict andesite volcanoes (Paritutu, Kaitake and Pouakai) in Taranaki are largely dominated by topographic effects. Three-dimensional magnetic modelling, well constrained by both contrasting levels of exposure and previous gravity models, shows that the bulk magnetization of the andesite edifice and edifice core of both Kaitake and Pouakai is 2.5–3.5 A m-1 in a direction close to that of the present earth's field. However, the large andesite dyke/stock complexes below all three edifices and a localized area of the Kaitake edifice directly above the centre of the subedifice complex have anomalously low bulk magnetizations of 0.3–1.0 A m-1 in the same direction. These subsurface complexes represent dyke injection from magma chambers situated in the basement, probably below 6 km depth. Here, we deduce that heat from these magma chambers drove hydrothermal convection systems causing widespread demagnetization, especially in the subedifice complexes, but also locally within the edifices themselves. A lesser degree of demagnetization at Pouakai, the youngest of the three volcanoes, may indicate a shorter and consequently more intense period of activity at this centre.

Topics: Chemistry and Pharmacology , Medicine
Notes: Abstract The pharmacokinetics of zileuton, a novel selective 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor, were studied in 37 patients with rheumatoid arthritis after administration of 200 mg, 400 mg, and 600 mg zileuton for 4 weeks. Patients had 6-h pharmacokinetic evaluation of zileuton on day 14. Plasma zileuton concentrations were quantitated using HPLC. Zileuton pharmacokinetic parameters were estimated using standard noncompartmental methods. A population analysis of zileuton pharmacokinetics was also performed with the NONMEM computer program. The pharmacokinetics of zileuton in patients with rheumatoid arthritis were similar to those previously estimated in normal healthy humans. The peak concentrations and the areas under the curves during the dosing interval were dose proportional. The noncompartmental means of the CL/f, terminal-phase half-life, and V/f of zileuton were approximately 545 ml min−1, 1.4 h, and 64.3 1, respectively. The estimate of population typical values of the CL/f for a 70-kg person (540 ml min−1) and V/f for a 70-kg person (64.8 1) from the NONMEM analysis were in agreement with the noncompartmental estimates. Differences in body weight, but not age or gender, helped explain some of the variability in the pharmacokinetics of zileuton in patients. Therefore, there is no pharmacokinetic basis for alteration of the zileuton dose size or the dosing schedule in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Topics: Chemistry and Pharmacology , Medicine
Notes: Abstract Objective: The pharmacokinetics of an N-hydroxyurea analog, ABT-761 in asthmatic pediatric patients with asthma were investigated. Methods: A total of 24 patients were enrolled into this 8-day single- and multiple-dose study. Patients received daily doses of ABT-761 according to their body weight: patients of 20–38 kg received 50 mg; patients 〉38 kg but ≤55 kg received 100 mg, and patients ≥55 kg received 150 mg. Results: The mean values for the terminal phase t1/2 were 16–17 h after multiple-dose administration. When normalized for body weight, the mean day 8 Clf values for 50-, 100-mg, and 150-mg doses were 0.57 (n = 13), 0.51 (n = 10), and 0.43 (n = 1) ml · min−1 · kg−1, respectively, while the mean Vz/f values ranged from 0.75 to 0.77 l · kg−1. The mean accumulation ratio observed (day 8 to day 1 AUC0–24 ratio) of ABT-761 was approximately 1.7, which is consistent with the t1/2 of this drug. Body weight, age, and body surface area were virtually identical in explaining the variability in dose-normalized Cmax and AUC values (R 2 = 0.61–0.68). The percents of variance explained by these three variables were within a range of 3% for each pharmacokinetic parameter. Conclusions: The pharmacokinetics of ABT-761 in children were similar to those previously reported in adults. Body weight, age, or body surface area can be used to provide dosing adjustment for ABT-761 in pediatric patients.

Notes: Abstract The 1991–1993 eruption was probably the largest on Mt. Etna for 300 years. Since then the volcano has entered an unusually quiescent period. A comprehensive record of gravity and ground deformation changes presented here bracket this eruption and give valuable insight into magma movements before, during and after the eruption. The gravity and deformation changes observed before the eruption (1990–1991) record the intrusion of magma into the summit feeder and the SSE-trending fracture system which had recently been active in 1978, 1979, 1983 and 1989, creating the feeder dyke for the 1991–1993 eruption. In the summit region gravity changes between 1992 and 1993 (spanning the end of the eruption) reflect the withdrawal of magma from the conduit followed more recently (1993–1994) by the re-filling of magma in the conduit up to pre-eruption levels. In contrast, in the vicinity of the fracture zone, gravity has remained at the 1991–1992 level, indicating that no withdrawal has occurred here. Rather, magma has solidified in the fracture system and sealed it such that the 1993–1994 increase in magma level in the conduit was not accompanied by further intrusion into the flanks. Mass calculations suggest that a volume of at least 107 m3 of magma has solidified within the southeastern flank of the volcano.

Notes: Abstract Objective: To study the effect of renal impairment on the pharmacokinetics of sertindole. Methods: A single 4 mg oral dose of sertindole was given to normal subjects ( n = 6) and subjects with various degrees of impaired renal function ( n = 18) classified into mild, moderate, and severe/hemodialysis based on their creatinine clearance). The relationships between the pharmacokinetic parameters and the degree of renal impairment were investigated using regression analysis with creatinine clearance as an explanatory variable along with body weight. Subjects were also genotyped for CYP2D6-A or 2D6-B mutations. Results: The mean CL/f and t1/2 values of sertindole ranged from 14 to 31 l · h−1 and from 73 to 93 h, respectively, and were not significantly related to creatinine clearances. There was no indication of any influence of creatinine clearance on the fraction of sertindole (0.994–0.995) binding to plasma proteins. The total fraction of the sertindole dose removed by dialysis was less than 0.1%. Subjects with B/B genotype ( n = 2) for CYP2D6 were associated with a distinctly lower clearance of sertindole (6.3 vs 25.3 l · h−1) than subjects with wt/wt genotype for CYP2D6. Conclusions: Since the pharmacokinetics of sertindole are unchanged by renal impairment, dosage adjustment does not appear to be necessary for subjects with various degrees of renal insufficiency or subjects with renal failure requiring hemodialysis.

Notes: Abstract We contrast the software architecture of a hard real-time application using a fixed priority task structure against the software architecture of the same system using a cyclic executive structure to satisfy hard real-time deadlines in response to a set of embedded system requirements. We identify the perceived and actual advantages and disadvantages of both approaches, consider the types of applications which can take advantage of these approaches, and make recommendations related to the attributes of such applications that might be needed with both approaches. We conclude that the fixed priority approach, when priorities are assigned using rate monotonic priorities, generally dominates the cyclic executive approach for hard real-time systems.
